40 breeder build thread. It's centered around my clownfish!

I asked in Feedback and questions and DC said to send the links to her and she will fix them over the next few days. Thanks DC :D

That would be great, I would love to see the pictures. I am also working on setting up a 40g breeder so I have been enjoying watching you put yours together.

I'm still in the process of planning and purchasing equipment so it will still be a while before I get to the point you are at.

Welcome to RC too! Honestly, my tank and stand sat in the garage since March...until I got time to stain and clear coat it.

I tested the water before I added more saltwater(mixing it a 1.026). There is .25 ammonia already...0 nitrite

There are about 35g of water in the display, 49g total..now the good and bad news. No leaks in the plumbing, but the baffles don't hold. I didn't think the ones with the skimmer would hold, but the fuge baffle was soo tight I couldn't hardly get it straight. That didn't even hold. I'm just going to order more baffles and glue them...

Thanks DC! I was hoping I wouldn't have to start a new thread! Now I know that if you change anything on Photobucket it will probably break a link somewhere even if I don't see anything that says so!

Here are pics of my failed baffles :( poo poo

That is my return!

I unioned my pump so I could take it off and since my plumbing is so simple, I can take the whole return off!

Used Loctite stuff that's safe for aquariums after it cures and glued my baffles in. Ended up using what I had. Some of the gap at the ends were a decent size but we smeared and plastered silicone all over it!

I thought it was cool that you can see my fill lines on my tank when I dumped the water in.

Wow- you didn't let those baffles slow you down any. I'm glad that turned out to be an easy fix for you. Too bad they failed, I was kinda thinking about trying the weather stripping myself

I was just going to have baffles recut, but then read on RC there needs to be some space and not have the baffle firmly against the glass anyway. Sooo we're trying it. Worse comes to worse, if they are too loose for the silicone to stick like that then I need new baffles anyway and another $12 in silicone. Not a huge expenditure.

I'm guessing I didn't get the measurements right for the weather stripping. I was guess the 3 baffles would loosen, but didn't think the fuge baffle would. My hubby pointed out that my stripping was grey and the one in that article on wetwebmedia.com was black. Don't know if that has anything to do with it or not, but thought I'd point that out. I may try this again on my 150. I just need my 40 cycling cause I have someone holding a coral for me. Need to get my tank cycled so I can pick it up :D

You will love the 40 breeder! The small swim throughs you have in your rocks will probably get occupied by your anemone.

I'm hoping the nem will stay on the right side! If not, that's ok because this tank is for it and the clowns...but that's what I'd like :)

I dug out my Reef Keeper Lite and am planning on where to put it. Hopefully it goes up tomorrow!

I am bored and was reading throught this thrad - I have intalled thousands of large aquariums, and I was thinking before I got to the last posts - "I cannot believe people would ever use glass sumps", and "Never use 90 degree fittings while plumbing - always 45s"

Ditch that glass sump if you value your floor, and any good LFS should be able to show you how to plumb that properly - it will be quieter and more efficient.

Thanks Adrienne :)

Got the sump running :) The return section is low in the video. I topped it off with more saltwater since it wasn't from evaporation. It's really not loud at all. The loudest part is the skimmer sucking air! I did drill a small hole in rigged return just below the water line to stop the back siphon and I got my RKL put in :) Trying to figure out how the thing works!

Here it is. Wasn't sure where to put it so it's here for now

Another note, I did find a really slow leak

look at this....look at this...see that purple glue on the seal underneath the union?

Nope. It's because it's not there. I missed gluing a whole piece of pipe in :eek2: Did I feel a little stoooopid :o I'll remind you this is my first time plumbing

some issues

I might also have a defective part :(

See the bulkhead part thing that's all one piece with the circle flange around it on the upper left? It also appears to be leaking from that! Right from where the flange is...It's all supposed to be 1 piece.

....here's the drip

On a happy note, I did glue the egg crate guard on, which will keep my cheato from flowing into the return area.

The lovely mess after breaking it up!

I took a shot of Bonnie and Clyde just cause :)

so no more leaks on the bulkhead, thus far..yay!

So filled up my fuge part and think I have a good balance between the flow rate on the return pump (it's adjustable) and the flow into the fuge.

Now fuge light position.

I think I like #2.

Oh and I'm not lighting my tank while it's cycling. I don't have anything alive on the rock that I need to keep alive and it could likely just fuel algae.

Personally, I like #3. To me it seems like anywhere else it might be in the way if you need to do any maintenance on anything. Just my two cents.

After looking and staring at my sump...haha...what fun :lolspin: I did decide I'm going to leave it there where it is at #3. That way we won't get it shining out of the back of the stand at night as much since it's angled forward. I'm getting my cheato tomorrow
