any ways good stuff man

How many pairs of spawners?

Up until now just the one pair of oc. I also have a pair of tomatos that are like clockwork, a pair of gsms that were like clockwork until about 8 weeks ago ( taking a break?) and my orchid dottybacks that are good for a nest every 6-7 days. I have raised a few hit & miss tom & gsm nests but the only consistent success is with the ocellaris. I can't do squat with the orchid larvae :( The oc's are kind of special, the male anyway. He is one of the very first fish I bought after moving here to SD. I've had him for over 5 years and he is the only fish I have that has ever survived brooklynella and lived to tell about it. I lost the original female to the brook and got this "replacement" from a friend about 4-1/2 years ago. The two first lived in my 125 reef were they began spawning after about a year. They have been moved twice since and never take long to get back to work. I really only started working with the larvae about a year ago, up to now I've sold maybe 500 so this hatch almost doubles all previous production :D

I'm going to start a thread on the "new" spawning pair.

what model filter is that in the picture?
i was also wondering this

In the UK we call those types of filters Huey Hung. Follow the link for more details.

Huey Hung

There might be a different name over there.

David, doing well. How long before the pairs start laying, especially after a move?

Thanks

Steve

Another 400 :)

Another 400 :)

403 actually  These are 21 days younger than the first batch, there was one in between but I missed it (hatched early).

Look how much they grow in 21 days!! The ones on the left hatched 04-10 and on the right 05-02. OK maybe that's 22 days, my bad  Anyway not bad for 4 and 7 week old fry, eh? There are another (estimated) 300 or so comming up 11 days behind these. Not sure why but it's definately a smaller hatch.

Since David is so far and he did not got to Imac and let the PB&J I made for him go bad he will have to learn the handshake later.

Snarkys, David has been doing the clownfish thing for about 2 years now, it is experience, he has no "silver bullet" for it, he has been through a lot of trials and tribulations, now he has joined the club.

lol not looking for a silver bullet, I'm just curious what he attributes his success too. you can just say time and learning or you could say what you actually learned over that period of time : )

maybe its some sort of trade secret that he wants to keep to himself and that's ok, but i didn't think it would hurt to ask. Maybe his experience could help others.

Everyone will tell you there is no secret. (except the handshake) Sure maybe we all have a different way of doing certain things but in the end nobody is doing anything you can't read about in the books by Frank, Joyce and Martin. For me I think the breakthrough is routine. Routine, routine, routine... followed by more routine. When I had the first large hatch people asked what changed. I thought long and hard about that and came up with this: What has changed is that nothing changes any more. In the beginning you constantly struggle to improve, testing and tweaking and altering things. Eventually you settle into a routine that is so automatic you can do it in your sleep. THAT is when I started getting the nice hatches :D

I think it is because of Spring, yeah, that's the ticket!

Large hatches mean that many can die off and there are still a lot of larvae.

I've been getting big hatches too, and I've only been doing this since September of 2005. My fish started laying early in 2006, so they are not pros yet, but lay large nests. Who know why it works so well all of a sudden? I just keep crossing my fingers that it will keep up.

Hey Ed, nobody made me a PB&J! :(

Hey Ed, nobody made me a PB&J! :(

Me either!

Congrats David, I think I know what you're saying about the routine thing, although for some reason I want to agree that spring has something to do with it(!) -- it was too bad you couldn't come to the IMAC
