Actually, the big move-in is this weekend, but I've had lots of work and lots of getting stuff ready. But it is time for an update, eh?

My lovely bride took some photos yesterday:

I have the barrel just about finished. I still need two 45s and to cement on the plumbing.

I can cut the egg collector out of the flow loop with the ball valve:

Thanks for the kick in the rear, Alan! :)

Looks very cool, although weird. That said, I would kind of expect a breeding set up to look like that or look like it came straight from a lab. Very interested to see how it works :)

Well, the idea is that pelagic spawning species need a deep water column in order to complete their spawning ascent, but they don't necessarily need a lot of room otherwise. Plus, the barrel being a column makes it easy to use flow dynamics (a circular, upwelling flow) to help collect the eggs. So, the barrel make a certain sense.

The idea is right out of this book: http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Illu...bs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231896996&sr=8-1

Well worth the purchase price!

how do you get the bulkheads to work on a round container. I have wanted to do this but I figured it would not work.

Thanks, zoo!

FUA--It works as long as the container is flexible. Basically, the bulkhead flattens that place out. Also, I give everything with threads a heavy coating in silicone. I know that some people say not to do that, but I've never have a threaded joint with silicone fail and _all_ of my joints with teflon tape fail eventually. So, it works for me.

--------------------------

So, I will probably be cementing the PVC onto the end of the water filter today! Once that dries, we're in business! Actually, I would have done it yesterday only to find that all of the PVC cement had dried up. All of the tanks in the basement are nearly drained and I'm ready to start filling them. The display tank will be a little longer because the cement guy is not done with the rockwork yet. But, we're getting there. :)

House inspections today....

House inspections today....

Hope you have the tea and cookies ready for the INSPECTORS :p But I'm certain with your GC you will not have any questions.

Thanks, ~sp0ok~!

Alan--Just some piddly details, as inspectors must justify jobs. Actually, the biggest involve the aquarium room. The inspectors are requiring unfettered access to the crawl space, so some of the plumbing above the sump is going to have to move. Also, they had to move a couple of electrical boxes in there because the inspector couldn't get into the boxes to check to make sure that they're working. The other big issue is a technicality involving venting the sump pit under the house. The plumber asked the city what kind of venting they wanted, installed that kind, and then the city changed their minds about what they wanted. No big.

The big cleanup starts tomorrow!

Tonight's photos: http://www.ummfish.com/remodel.html

But, some photos of the nascent rockwork. He just started adding the base coat of cement this afternoon. The finish coat with sculpting goes on tomorrow or the next day.

The access doors above and below the aquarium are supposed to be installed Friday.

All I can say is ABSOLUTELY STUNNING
I love that "Victorian factory" look where you've left the dumb waiter cast iron wheel exposed and ran the ropes through the counter.

Thank you both! I think that if you actually have a Victorian house, you really need to go with the whole "steampunk" theme. We don't have enough brass for that, though. :) The metal guy that made the fence is actually putting together some more ornamentation for the side of the dumbwaiter frame along the whole "exposed gear" theme. I hope it turns out. He hasn't shown us anything on it yet.

The Big Clean is underway! I just saw them upstairs vacuuming out window runner channels and such. In fact, one of the guys was shoveling show off the roof of the porch(?). Maybe in order to clean the outside of the skylights or something? I would think that's a little overkill, but it'll be nice to start with clean windows.

Hey! The house is mostly clean! Woohoo!

Just so you all know, all the photos in this thread are hosted on a server local to me. I'm going to be migrating my network to the house over the next couple of days (or more, depending on how it goes) including moving my business server to a new computer and possibly even moving these photos to a new server, so you may encounter periods where the photos don't work. You have been warned!!!! :)

Mmmm, I looooovvvve IT work. At least Macs make it easier.

Well, I used to like you...until you said you use Macs...geesh!! :mad2:

Just Kidding!! ;)

About your rocks...using cement, how long do you think it will take for all that to cure, pH to stabilize, concrete chemicals to leach out, etc. once you get water in the tank? Also, are you using real live rock in one of the downstairs tanks to compensate for the lack of pores in the concrete rock, or did you use rock salt and crushed oysters in the mix?

Well, thanks.... :)

The cement guy tells me that it'll only take a couple of weeks to cure the cement, but I guess he hits it with an acid bath in order to help. I will be using live rock downstairs and some in the display tank as well. The concrete's just to hold the base structure together and hide and intakes. Well, plus it should look cool and shouldn't ever fall. :) One of the biggest issues is the rockwork on the corner. That's there to protect what is structurally the weak point of the tank.

You plan on doing massive water changes frequently and testing to make sure it does only take a few weeks for everything to leach out? I've thought about making my own rock before, but everything I've read says it takes upwards of 6 weeks to leach all the "crap" out of the concrete and have it be truely cured to the point it won't crash a system...

I love my MP and MBA. :p I switched from a
:uzi:PC
back last January and haven't looked back. The only time I fire up BootCamp is to play games (sorely lacking for the Mac) or start Parallels to use
:uzi:Microsoft
Money or AutoCAD. I love :love1: my Macs.

I'm only getting internet sporadically, so just a quick howdy. Sorry about the photos. Probably down 'til Monday (along with my email).

Jason--If it takes six weeks, so be it. The fishroom is completely separable from the display tank, anyway, so I can get started with salt down there.

Looks like the photos are back, baby! No new photos yet--haven't had time--and I'd better get back to moving.

As a tank update, the skin installer guys got about half of the bottom done Friday. None of the upper panels are on yet.
