What's your plan for that algae?

Basically, I think this is part of the aging process.. and as the tank ages it will go away. In the meantime the snails, and fish are picking on it and eating it. I only have 3 tangs at the moment, but will be adding another one soon.

Am also getting some PHOSar, and run that to drop the phosphate levels and that may help with the algae too.

really beautiful setup. i have been silently following along getting alot of ideas for my next setup.

I hope you don't mind but I have a lighting question for you.

on a 6'x4'x2' tank, do you think I could get away w/ 2 x 400w on luminarc IIIs if I raised them up.

I figured going w/ 400w would allow me to raise them up enough to get more coverage and still have enough penetration for an SPS tank. What do you think? Thanks

Yes, you should be able to get away with 2 400s with the LA3, especially if you are creative with the rock work.

Sanjay,
Cant remember if this was covered earlier in the thead or not, bit do you have a generator for power outtages or a back up plan? I realize you guys up in Pennslyvania are used to bad winter weather, but many areas near me are out of power....
just wondering what you do for safety measures with a tank that size.

Nick

Sanjay, I hope you didn't think I was trying to be sarcastic with my comment I made earlier about the Algae coverage being great, As I consider that silica dusting/green algae coverage as being part of the Natural aging process of the tank. and that the tank is going in the right direction

Tank looks great....

I always like keeping cleaner shrimp and fish in tanks.. its just too cool to see the fish seeking out these guys to get cleaned and even forming a waiting line.

here is one fish getting the top of the line simulataneous cleaning from the shrimp and neon goby.

Do you have any clams in this tank? I had a neon gobie that use to bite my clams mantels to where they stopped openning. My Harliquin prevents the cleaner shrimp:(

you got anthias with tangs. I have a blue tang and when I introduced yellow anthias to the tank, the blue tang kept chasing them, until they all died, they did eat cyclop eeze, but after being constantly chased by the tang they stoped eating and eventually died.
Of course my tank is 75 gals, is that the reason why the tang went berserk?, would the tang tolerates them if the tank was a 200 g?

Id bet on it. Tangs are a somewhat territorial bunch, so to go adding in anthias after the tang pretty much declared the whole tank to itself... it was only a matter of time. A few weeks ago I watched an orphan achilles tang get the crap beated out it by a powder blue after being introduced to a 210g with plenty of other dither fish.

then in order to mix them in my new aquarium, which will be 210g, what should I do?, sell the tang and buy a new one?, or not buy one at all.
Or it won't matter since it will be a complete different system, so it wont chase the anthias.

There a lot of people who have anthias with tangs. tangs can be quite territorial and its hard to generalize what any individual will do. may be you got a tang that has it in for anthias. :D

I think you will fare better in a larger tank with the anthias and the tangs too.

Nick:

In the 12 years I have lived in this house, we have only lost power once for any period of time longer than 5-6 hours.
I plan on getting the battery back ups for the vortech pumps so I will at least have water motion in the tank. Corals can tolerate the dark for a day or two. I also have some battery powered air pumps to use.

I know I need to start looking into a generator at some point, once the invested value in livestock and coral starts to escalate.

So at this point I am currently sitting on a large risk factor with hopefully a low probability based on past history.

The battery backup is one of the things I like best about the Vortech pumps, and I would assume since your tank is in your basement and of such significant size in terms of water volume that heat loss isnt as big a problem for you as it would be for others....
We lost power for 4 days this summer, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 350,000 people are still without power right now in the St Louis area due to the winter storms...so generators are a booming business in the mid-west at the moment. Fortunately we were able to buy a good sized generator during the last outtage during the summer, so I can run several things in addition to my tank....
Hopefully, your local electrical provider is keeping up with their maintenance and tree trimming better than ours is...

me too, although i am not sure why i would need to talk to him. i plan to install a GenerAC system in my new house. we just got the permit this week so that is good timing. i have a local distributor nearby and think i know what system to get, the 12 Kw.

carioskoi chech the size of the generator real close thay run 24/7 and can used a hole lot gas if thay are way over size.

maybe i should speak to the GenarAC guy to help me size the unit. i have to have at least 5Kw 24/7. i have a large koi pond and the reef tank. and i know we will have another earthquake and no electricity for days.

Carl

Okay, I will talk with the guy and get his information to pass along. I know he travels alot though... business was good down in N.O. and hardly anyone has seen him since (I saw him once this past year... he even missed Brew-fest with all his buddies & me this year). I was going to try to get your info and pass it along to him though... that might be easier.
