600 Display (1100+ total system) Mixed Reef

I also have the ability to install an OM 8-way since I have the eight return holes drilled in the top of the tank, or I guess I would actually have to intsall two 4-ways because I have two return pumps.

Obligatory photo of kids in the sump!!!!

Now time to start focusing on the main tank!!!!!

There were 6 of us. What a pain!!!!!!!!!!!!! The tank weighs in excess of 900 lbs. (my best estimate).

Shawn,

Did you get your tank yet? Moved it in the house?

No not yet :( Will had something come up... We are going to try for Fri the 16th...

I have two questions:

1) Would 14" of open space above the tank be enough for lighting?

2) Does it really matter how far my water drops from the overflows to the sump?

I will only have like 13" - 14" above my tank and I am running L3 reflectors...

It does not matter how much of a drop, only thing is the more the water drops the more it will splash (causing salt creap)... Why do you ask ?? Can you give details...

You could use a PVC pipe with some holes drilled in the bottom of it and have your overflow lines run into, try to make a lid to cover it... Look at the link below of a sump with a "bubble tower" that Marc (Melev) built for an idea of what I am talking about...

Sump - Model A

I was thinking about doing something like this for the overflow drain into my ref...

I was unsure whether a 10" to 12" drop from the overflow to the sump would create enough flow from the display to the sump.

I guess as long as I have the right return pumps it should work fine.

Doh, I get what you are saying now... Sorry about that I was thinking you meant the water dropping into the sump... DUH...

10 - 12" is enough I would think... I mean if you have tank and a sump under the stand its only dropping about the same depending... Is it at an angle or straight down ?? What pump were you looking at again ??

If the pipe you use is big enough the drop shouldn't matter. You just must be sure you have enough dia in the drain pipes to flow what the pump can flow :)

I would think the height difference from the tank's bulkhead to where it enters the filter could actually be sloped up causing the drain pipe to be angled up. The only thing that would happen is the water level inside the overflow box would simply fill up with water more which would cause the water to flow due to the pressure of the water inside the prefilter.

Made some progress on the display tanks stand last night. A few items left to do (probably less than an hours worth of work) and it will be ready for the tank.
