600 Display (1100+ total system) Mixed Reef

Is it necessary to go with 1" thick plywood on top of the stand as opposed to 1/2" plywood? Being that it's an acrylic tank.

I would say that 1/2" is more then enought... I went with 3/4" on mine, but that is only because they were out of the 1/2"... I am only using 1/2" styrofoam on top of that...

Additional flow will come from 1 or 2 Tunze Wavebox's and either Tunze Streams or possibly Seio 2600's.

Hey Aric-

FINALLY!!! :p :p :p

You'll want a minimum of 2 waveboxes and more like 3 for decent movement. I imagine you'd get about a 1/4-1/2" wave in your tank with 2. Serdar has 2 waveboxes in his big 8x4 prop tank and he gets about a 1/4-1/2" wave at best. From what I've seen, actual tank volume doesn't matter nearly as much as surface area. More surface area = smaller wave.

I added 2 on my 400 (82x45x28) since you've seen it last, and I get a 3/4" oscillating wave. When I had both on my 180 it was about a 2" wave.

I've had zero problems with my 4 x Tunze streams, but I have had a SEIO go bad (zap-ouch).

Shawn - that bubble trap that you linked from the TOTM, I have two quesitons (if you know the answer)

1. Are those drilled holes actually enough to properly drain enough water?

2. How does the water actually drain out of that plastic bin (into the sump)?

Thanks!
Ron

1) I would think that the holes provide enough drainage; I figure if / when I did this I could just drill the holes larger if it was causing a problem...

2) I believe (I could be wrong) that the bottom of that plastic bin is cut out... As you can see it's sitting on some egg create, so I am guessing that is what keeping the filter floss from sagging...

I would go with the thicker wood for the top of the tank. The cost isn't that much more especially when you cosider how much the closed loop is going to cost you :) I always like to go on the safe side building stuff & there is going to be a LOT of weight in there, 3200 or so lbs!!

It's actually pretty easy to test my drain theory :)

Believe me! It's felt like an eternity designing this set-up!:)

Do you run a closed loop on your tank Sean or just the Tunzes & Waveboxes?

No Closed loops... Just streams & waveboxes.

The streams give me about 12,000 gph flowing in a mostly clockwise direction.

The 3/4" tall wave is about 32" long and 43.5" wide and cycles every 1/2 second. Of course, on the opposite side of the tank is a 3/4" trough about the same size...

That's a total of about 9 gallons of water being displaced 2x per second. That's about 64,000 gph of displacement thru a standing wave. Turnover between my tank and sump is about 1000 gph.

Total flow in my tank (counting the wave displacemnt) is approaching 200 times tank volume. Although the displacement from the wavebox is much more gentle on average than having relatively targeted closed loops (or even more streams) would be.

Running two waveboxes on my 96 x 48 x 34 I get 3/4" to 1" wave. I have mine built into an external overflow though so not sure if they would work the same. They aren't actually in the tank. I honestly don't want any larger waves with that much water moving back and forth. Also running 4 x 6200's (all 6 pumps on the same end) and I think there's plenty of flow.

Hey HOC, does the 2 waveboxes move
much of the water at the bottom of the tank?
Settting up a 108"x48"x32" and wondering if
closed loops will be needed also-keep the pics
coming Sixxer-congrats!!

Works great. I run bare bottom and no detritus collecting anywhere. The 4 x 6200's have a lot to do with it too. There's also a mag 24 inside the external overflow running a spraybar under the rockwork to keep it clean. You may need more than two waveboxes though with your extra length. I think I'm pushing the limits of two waveboxes.

HOC, I see you made your 700gal yourself ?? Do you have your own thread or website ?? I am interested to know how you went about it and how hard it was and what not... I saw the few pics on your gallery, I would love to see more...

Unfortunately I didn't document it very well. I have some more pics, but that's about it. I don't want to steal this guys thread. Maybe I'll work on a new thread.

It took a big router table, a big router, and a lot of practice. It was extremely difficult turning the thing over by myself. Not to mention putting it up on the stand by myself. I hate asking for help.

On the overflow drop question.. I have mine going from my fuge which the top of is about 8" above the top of my tank. It overflows underneath my floor from a shop about 12 feet away into the display. Water levels out pretty easily. I don't think you'll have a problem. The amount of water you're able to push through may be lower. Also the waveboxes really mess with overflows so keep that in mind.

Sixxer your going to love the tank. It looks like we will have about the same thing. Mine is viewable from three sides too. The four foot depth is kind of weird though. You can't tell it's that wide until you walk past the end of it. It's almost like finding another tank hidden behind the first.

Got the tank up on the stand tonight!!!!!!!!

You beat me...

You beat me...

LOL well you beat me as far as getting the tank on the stand... I have yet more delays... But yours is looking good... Looks like you used all 2x6's for the stand yes ?? I was thinking about this but only used two down the 8' side on the top of the stand and the rest is 2x4's... My next tank with be on powder coated steel I think...

How much access room do you have above the tank? Will you have enough room to move things around?

Awesome sized tank by the way.

Is this basement/space the same area where you were building the concrete tank?

Matt
