Miztic came over today and we spent about 3-4 hours working on hanging the lights. We have all 4 rails up and one of the Stealth units is hanging. Its not pretty atm but its up there and sliding around :) Hoping to get the other unit up tomorrow, tidy up a bit, and start on the electrical.

wmilas,
Been there with the magnets ---- I have never been in so much pain, and scared of possibly loosing a pointer finger at the same time. I now take extra precaution when those and tunse magnets come out of the tank

Got the second fixture hung, all the dc4 and dc8 boxes mounted, and started on the wiring. If work isn't too rough tomorrow, the plan is to make the custom cables and see if I can start to tidy this mess up and start to add more programming to the ac3 pro

The wiring for all the control lines is done, the electrical wiring is done, the lights are cleaned up. I'm waiting on a new glass shield from AO to replace one of the ones that was busted in transit.

I started adding more programming to the AC3 Pro. The simulator makes things alot less painful! plan is to program more tomorrow, get rid of more extension cords and junk, then take pictures of the room again. This have changed immensely this week!

There is life in the tank! Lots of micro stars on the glass and a few snails came out to play today. All hiked in on the live rock.

Sweet. Since you are still in the beginning and you had most of your rock cycled it couldn't hurt to throw a few bags of pods in while there aren't any fish in there. It will really give them some time to grow before you add fish. You might need to give them some food or plankton. Just a thought

Never thought of that. That's a good idea. I've been feeding the tank a bit of food now and then just to get something in the water.

I'm heading out of town next week so I'm thinking I'll let the tank cruise this and next week then start to get serious about adding some livestock.

This is the problem. My tank is damn near completely cycled and I have no algae. Sounds great till you consider when people add their cleanup crew the crew needs to eat _something_. I'm quarantining everything that goes into the tank. The cleanup crew that first goes in will be in the main tank for 6-7 weeks with no fish to starve out any ich that might enter with them. Any cleanup crew after that will be quarantined. So I want to add as much crew as I can in the beginning but on the other hand I don't want them all to die :P

Sounds like great progress!

Bummer about your finger though.

A sheet of nori rolled & rubber banded around a piece of scrap 1" PVC would feed a lot of snails for the better part of a week. I did this (on a much smaller scale) when I stared my last two tanks for the same reason.

Another great idea. I'm just worried with snails being so dumb, and crabs so aggressive that the crabs might eat the nori and the snails never find it... although crabs never seem to be much of a nori eater and if I drop in some meaty bits I might be able to keep them happy.

Any one have any input on how many snails and crabs I should order to start? I know a tank of my size, if mature can support hundreds, I'm just not sure on what to get to start.

Ok so more pictures. The wiring is starting to get cleaned up and the controller is actually getting a workout now.

Full tank shot. Yes there are lots of micro-bubbles. I'll tackle that later.

Looking great Wmilas
Don't you hate having to deal with the excess wire that comes with stuff. I like to make mine look neat by looping the excess and using zip ties to attach it to conduit, pipe or whatever is convenient, but it still looks messy. On the light fixture for my QT tank I actually cut and spliced the power cord and the moon light and fan low voltage wires and encased the wires in cable tidy (the split corrugated stuff you can get from Radio Shack).

Several questions:
  1. Does the mounting kit that comes with the lights have a means of raising and lowering it?
  2. I saw on one of your power strips (plugged into the ceiling) what looked like an extension for a transformer brick. I have a timer power strip for the light on my QT tank and I cannot plug in a regular plug and "brick" side by side (don't know why manufacturers don't take this into consideration). If it is can you tell me where you got it.
  3. Did AO paint the back of your tank? He's going to paint mine with epoxy for $50 which I thought reasonable.
    [/list=1]
So far I like dealing with those guys - they answer email promptly, the now charge your CC in US$ avoiding foreign currency exchange fees, and they take care of getting the tank through customs -- all issues I have seen other RC posters mention.
    Can't wait to get mine.

  1. the mounting kit does not come with a way to easily raise or lower the lights. There is a way but it takes two hands. You have to unscrew thumbscrew on each side and push the wire through then tighten the thumb screw to lock the mechanism. Its a pain the the butt to be honest but it looks nice. These fixtures really aren't meant to be in a fishroom but to be a showpiece above a external open top tank. So everything is streamlined and very slick. Unfortunately the functionality of raising or lowering is a pain.

With my rails I shouldn't need to raise or lower. If it turns out I do I'm mounting pulleys on the rail wheels and I'll do it that way.

That power brick extender actually ships with the units. The reason its there is the controller for the fan speed is built into that brick, and its a 120v/240v universal controller that has prongs for European 240v outlets. Remember its an Italian fixture... not many people on this side of the pond own these things. The other 3 power cords have us nema 15 prongs, but the fan controller has the European blades. The extender converts the blades into the dual US blades.

My tank wasn't made by AO. I wanted a Acrylic tank for various reasons. The black stuff you see on mine is actually two parts. Its firstly black acrylic, not clear, and secondly the back outside is then painted with whats more like a black truck liner type stuff. Acrylic is much softer than glass and I was afraid I'd scratch/gouge it from inside the fishroom and you'd see it from inside the tank. So I had a thicker type item than paint applied.

That being said black acrylic is perfect for a glass tank. If you do manage to chip it its easy to fix it with glass. Simply paint over the chip with more black acrylic paint :) Glass is very forgiving in that way.

Oh I remember now, it was GlassReef who got an AO tank. I'm still up in the air on the pendants. I will need to have a 6" high black acrylic "band" around the three sides of the top of the tank to keep the light from getting in our eyes when we are watching TV (we face the area where the tank will go when we watch TV) and also to hide the over the top return pipes. This "band" isn't really a hood because it will be open topped so I'm really wondering if I should be spending a lot of money on a nice shiny sleek pendant when I won't see much of it.
Having said that I don't have anything to attach a retro system to so I need a pendant.
Any thoughts?

Yup. As I said (perhaps in an email don't remember what part was posted on your thread, my thread, and in private messages), The only *good* t5 options are going to be an icecap SLR, Geissman (sp?) Sfiligoi, and ATI. ATI is kind of out because although its rumored they make a 120v US 5" pendant, I've never seen it and I looked and called everywhere.

That leaves an Icecap SLR (Or tek SLR, but imho the Icecap is better) or one of the pendants. Both pendants are gorgeous and although its a shame to hide them, They are not much more than an economy built SLR. I priced the aluminum to build a "real" SLR and it ended up being pretty much a few hundred bux less than the pendant... not really worth my time. You could build the light rack out of PVC or wood, but IMHO its not a good long term solution.

That leaves the pendants. I like the Sfiligoi over the Giesmann because it had more bulbs. That was pretty much my reasoning.

The cheapest way to do the whole thing is to do MH lighting with VHO or t5 supplementals. You'll be forced to build an aluminum rack yourself or spend money on a pendant that would be just as much as a t5 pendant. But if you build the rack you can save a ton of money because the components for MH are cheaper than t5. But as I mentioned before I wanted the ability to fiddle with colors that T5 gives and I wanted to be able to run sections of the pendant at a time... something you can't do with MH.

Isn't this one, or are you referring to something different? It's a 60" 10x80watt
ATI

I like the option about changing colors with t5. I picked up some aluminum to make a little system for my mh but still want to ad some t5 or vho. I really love the purple bulbs I think when done right with attic they can really make the corals pop.

To start I will get a little less crabs than you want untill you add your fish. It would suck if they start eating your snails.

Your tank is really coming together nicely.

Yup that's the one! I see its on pre-order now. When I was digging around a few months back everyone said it was available to order, but when I ordered I was told it wasn't available to order. If Reefgeek says its on pre-order then it must be coming soon :)
