I used stirrers in College too. For the extra cost ($250) I'll just replace the $20 maxijet every year or two :) Thats my basic thoughts. Don't get me wrong. The AO unit is probably the best out there. Its just freakn expensive.

Blew another wad of cash. New bulbs (instead of the somewhat useless ones) for the 3 new fixtures. 2 of the PM reactors. Eheim pump. 4 float switches and assorted float goo-gads. Neptune break-out box. Lots of Carbon, GFO, and 2 part (think buckets) from bulk reef supply, along with some fragging stuff.

On a positive note I have cyno-bacteria freakn everywhere now :)

Nitrate is on the rise. Reading about 8-9 PPM now. Going to have to start the water changes :-/ I'm hoping its going to peak sometime this weekend. Still 0 for ammonia and nitrite.

I bought the same precision marine media reactors. Build quality is excellent. Very nice product at a very fair price.

I read a bit about your magnet cleaner. Which one are you using? I'm looking for one that can clean 3/4" acrylic. Care to recomend a brand?

BTW, how'd the dart work out as a return pump? Are you getting strong flow out of all the nozzles? I was really curious to see how the dart would perform.

The dart has more flow that I expected. So much flow that I originally had plain old pvc just pointing down into the water. At 30 " down it blew dinner size holes (4 of them , 4 exits) into the sand all the way down to the acrylic. Thats a 4" sand bed :)

I put pvc right angles on them. I still need to order the flex nozzles.

I bought the Magnavore 8 because my acrylic is 1" on the front and one side, and 1.25" on the back and other side... Although I don't plan on cleaning the part thats 1.25" because its black. I really like its, its quality built. The ONLY part I don't like is it doesn't float. I haven't lost it to the bottom yet because its so strong, but I'm sure its going to happen.

You would use a model 6 ER. You might also want to look at the mighty magnet one. Different company. They are more expensive but they float for their larger sizes. I did not know about those when I bought mine, and I might have bought one of those instead.

Thanks! I'll take a look at both.

That really shows you how well the dart can perform when not restriced. Pretty amazing actually. I stand corrected!

Well I just dropped another wad of cash ordering 4 more magnums. So it'll be 2 magnum 8's and 4 magnum 6's. That should be enough to start.

I just scratched the living #^@%%#$^ out of the inside upper corner of the front pane of my tank. It was my own fault. When I was using the cleaner magnet I didn't realize then when I flipped it inside to turn the corner some of the glass padd(that holds the acrylic pad) was exposed. So I have a 6 inch or so stripe of about 20 lines about 4 inches long gouged into my tank. Son of a...

On the plus side I ordered a scratch kit so I'll see how well I can buff the thing out. Thankfully its near the top so I'll only have to get my hand wet :)

Ah, the joys of acrylic (NOT). Sorry about the scratch wmilas :( That's the main reason I went with glass. Hope you can buff it out.

I knew it was going to scratch. Although I'm kinda worried about it can im a bit obsessive compulsive, I know I can buff it out. Never done it before, that that part that's worrying me :)

what do you plan on using the magnums for?

we are planning a large tank upgrade
so doing some learning here on your thread... also feel your 'pain' w/ the scratches!... i semi freq get them on my glass tank so part of our upgrade plans are going to have to factor in glass (the expense of as well as the 'accomodations' for) bec i would hate to think of how long acrylic would last in my hands... nice thing about acrylic though is that atleast it CAN be buffed out...

incredible build!
really like your 'attention' to detail... all the way around - not only your tank but everything else around it... we are also remodeling our interior and like the stone/wood work etc (so getting ideas in more ways then one from this build!).

keep the pics coming

regards

The magnums are used as water circulation in the main tank. I'll see how they work.. if they suck, I'll get tunzies. I've been using the two 8's in the main tank and they have preformed better than I expected.

I'll have the 8's flow the length of the tank, and the 4 6's flow criss cross the width of the tank. Because the back of my tank is black, and the magnums are black, I can barely even see them in the tank :) this might change when everything gets coralline on them, but perhaps not.

I'm curious to see how these hang with Tunze. Less expensive isn't always worse. As for the corraline, just make sure they are in an easy-to-reach location and soak them in vinegar once every few months. This will put them back in black and improve performance quite a bit.

Well considering the 8's actually move more water than the vortechs, (3250 gph vs 3000 gph) it'll be interesting. I ordered the 6's for width flow cause the 8's were just too strong. I'm hoping the 6's aren't too strong. The 6 of them puts me somewhere are 25x turnover which isn't bad to start. My plan is to add 2 more 8's or a few more 5's or 6's depending on where I need flow later to get me to 35-40x turn over, assuming my sand can stay on the bottom of my tank at those levels :)

Also, I just ordered 500 dwarf ceriths, and coupla hundred mixed flyspeckeled and Florida Ceriths). Snails ahoy! They ship next Monday. They gonna have a feast on the massive amounts of red cyano I'm growing :)

Are you going to run some or all of the Koralias with a Koralia Wavemaker or two? I was bummed to recently find out that they aren't variable speed pumps without the Wavemaker. Otherwise they look like a fantastic deal.

With both pendants running I'm seeing water temp rise to 82.6 (or a bit higher) during the day. I'm running the fuge nights at light and thats causing the nightly drop to happen slower. Later on I'll be running the frag lights which would cause the heat load at night to go up another 200% over what its at now.

I lowered the tank temp to 79.5 base. I also set the exhaust fans now to kick on at 82 and turn back off at 81.5.

This is fine during the winter but when summer comes and it gets warmer than 80 i'm going to have a problem.

That made me remember the evaporative cooler that I read about a few years back. I don't have a humidity problem really, just a heat problem.

I'm wondering:

1) If I throw a fan over the fuge and it IS say 90F outside but not 100% humidity, will my tank cool as I evaporate water into 90F fishroom air if I have the vents open and running to flush humid air and bring in drier?

2) I used to have a turf scrubber on my old tank back before skimmers. I saw this thread: http://forum.marinedepot.com/Topic89570-4-1.aspx and saw how the guy made the turf scrubber vertical. I could possibly make a scrubber in my sump (which has the extra benefit of huge nutrient removal) plus it would act like a massive evaporator if I put a fan on it.

3) I could barely prop open one of the doors above the tank and set the exhaust fan on and turn the intake fan off thus using super cold house air. The problem is then I get air leakage when the fan isn't blowing. Wonder if I could use a small servo to open and close the door?

Hum....
