600 Gallon Upgrade Build

Getting close O. Still bin eye watch qt. Some colors have shifted in a few colonies. Getting brown and I think it's the lighting transition. Gonna turn the lights up a little and watch.

Wayne, my experience with the maricultured stuff that I have recently purchased that they need a lot of light right off the bat. I had put a couple of them on the bottom and a couple mid to the top section of my tank and the ones on the bottom browned out but are working their way back. However, the ones on the top retained their color and have looked great from day 1. This might not be the norm but thought I would share my experience with you.

Wayne if you want to borrow one of my Hydra's while you QT it's yours but will need to be manually controlled, otherwise i should be picking up a 65 this week and can hold some for you in QT.

Dam, good luck with the new corals Wayne. I spoke to my buddy who is a coral vendor about maricultured stuff this weekend by coincidence and he says they are somewhat difficult to acclimate into our reef tanks and are very sensitive compared to aquacultured corals , best of luck.

Mari-Cultured corals can often be hit & miss regarding the acclimation needed (or not) It largely depends on how deep the racks are they have been growing as well as the time of year. Low & high visibility (water clarity) changes with the seasons in Indonesia (or so I am told).
Personally I am not bothered by a bit of brown out as they will generally color back up in the tank.

I love watching the ones that are browned out color back up. I was able to buy some that were being sold as "brown out specials". Theyve been in my tank for a few weeks now and just starting to color back up....cant wait to see what they will look like.

Thank you Steve. I've read the same thing on a thread here in the SPS forum. I adjusted the lights already. I'll check the corals out daily considering they are only a couple weeks old.

Thank you for the offer Sonic. The LEDs I have over the tank has done me well so far. I didn't want to shock the corals with the intensity so t hats why I kept the lighting low. But with maricultured corals I see that theory has been misproven.

Thanks E. They are hard to get to acclimate because they usually come from 7-8 dKh water and coming to our tanks where the dKh is higher and maybe more nutrients in the tank could be the case in the corals failing. After I dipped the corals I additionally dripped them to my tank parameters. Overall it took me about 3-4 hours with a small powerheads in the bucket. So far I've only lost two corals and that's only because the water leaked out the bag.

You picked a nice selection.. Hope they all make it into the DT .. Looking forward to seeing them there and wish you the best

Thanks Osama. And Happy Veterans Day to you to. I love the corals I received. Only thing I didn't like was I couldn't choose. One box was their best choice of pieces for me but had multiples upon multiples. The second box was a steal because the original person backed out on the box so I just bought it because of the deal.

Hopefully I can get pics first and make my coral choice from there.

Hi Newbie, I am curious, if you are still running the Gyre flow system and if it has been successful for you? Anything to look out for when using this method?

I haven't ran it yet as I haven't added corals to the tank and that I'm 2 wave makers short of creating the gyre.

how are all of those "frags" doing wayne?????
They are doing great and starting to get settled. I say that because my alk was stable at around 9.4 dKh for a month and yesterday I tested and it was at 8.7 dKh. Unless my theory is wrong. I'm debating on taking them off the plugs before transferring.

Your thoughts? Besides how's the progress on your tank?

I know that a lot of people say to take maricultured pieces off of the base but I have always been nervouse about doing that. I would be afraid that it would cause damage to the rest of the coral so I just keep them on the base. I scrub them really well with a tooth brush when they arrive.

My tank is moving along really nicely! cabinetry gets installed on friday so it will be cosmetically finished. I have been picking pieces here and there as I go. Im extremely happy with all of my design and equipment decisions I made.
