600 Gallon Upgrade Build

Well hello everyone. Sorry for the latest but I think I know my problem but then again I don't know my problem. Here is my tank as it looks today.

You're probably or probably not wondering what happened? All I know is everything was going well and randomly I would wake up or come in from outside of town and I will have flesh coming off the skeleton or worse just bleached out. The only parameter that I'm fighting at the moment is potassium as I can't get it over 360ppms to save my life. Maybe I'm not ready for mari cultured corals or my tank is old enough. So far the only corals surviving are aquaculture or corals I got from other hobbyist tanks. I'm not going to quit but maybe take a different approach.

I plan on starting all over and use aquaculture frags and just sit back and watch them grow. I always thought adding frags to a tank my size was like giving a whale a tic tac. I guess patience will have to be the key this time. I'm on the crossroads as to either start the calcium reactor back up or just straight start Part A, B, C dosing.

Sorry guys.

Could it be a fuel leak from the airplane wreck? ;)

Did I see Cyanobacteria in one of your pictures?

Does your water really stay that hazy?
That could be a rear case of calcareous "algal" bloom,

Do you know what that brown stuff on the sand is?
If it is what I think it is you should not be adding any more SPS.

No cyano. Some diatomaceous coming and going.

Have you solved the Alk issue?
Had very high alk levels appear with high TDS water due to a bad membrane in the past.
Water changes at alk that high can be shocking your corals...
How long are sps lasting i your tank before they RTN?

Yes I resolved the alk issue. The membrane was shot thus causing the high alk reading in my salt mixing tank. But even with water changes the alk in my tank was ranging between 9-9.6 dKh. But the high tds probably contributed to some of the loss but I recently tested my potassium and it was at 340 ppms so I know that played a roll in my blues and rtning.

The corals were all placed in at once and lasted about a month and a half then once a week they started rtning or I'd wake up to totally white or the skin was flaking off. So basically I'm thinking about going all aquaculture.

Wayne, sorry to hear about the SPS losses... Maricultured SPS corals can be super-sensitive when first introduced and need spot on params. We've also found they do better with less intense light initially and slowly increasing it over several weeks.

True aquacultured corals that have been in captivity for a good while definitely handle param swings much better.

When I first bought them I placed them under acclimation mode for a month. Another person from a reputable company said that they needed to be hit with light from the beginning which I weird because they have been stressed through shipping and handling why would you do something like that to the corals.

Wayne you know you are welcome to come pick up one of everything i have. they are not super rare but they are healthy and growing.

We have lost MANY maricultured corals in the past. They are very, very touchy. Aquacultured stuff will usually "take a beating" and keep on keeping on.

Good luck with the re-stocking Wayne! Keep your head up.

Thanks. I won't let that stop me. How's thing going with your tank.

Good! Another thing to note is maricultured corals will have "stunted" growth at first for a long while in some cases, where aquacultured corals seem to just take off and start growing in a very short time period. Well at least usually for us.

Well if your talking about the replacement tank (470g) it hasn't arrived yet. But if your talking about the 400g it failed in under 24hrs of dialing in the bean animal overflow and letting it run. Brace in the middle of the coast to coast external started peeling the tint off the back wall ... I contacted AGE right away that morning and they told me to drain the overflow immediately. That was about 3 weeks ago. They are doing everything in their power to make it right including stepping the glass up from 1/2" to 3/4" and increasing the size of the tank to accommodate an internal overflow without sacrificing space inside the tank. So its all good. Stuff happens.

That's info that's good to know about mari cultured. Also sorry to hear that happen to you. I hope al goes we'll and good idea to bump up the glass thickness.
