600 Gallon Upgrade Build

Update Update Update

The Good: The kessils have been over the tank for about a little over a month. I apologize for not having any progression shots of each coral but I will begin that this month. Only downfall is I know they're acros but not which kind. Here is the tank now in its present state.

As you can see from the FTS that I finally got the granite installed for the bar. Now the tank feels complete.

The Bad: As you know with maricultured corals you have to take the good with the bad. Yes I lost some colonies but also was able to save a frag or two from them. Why they rtn or was totally bleached in one day I can't tell you to save my life. As you can see in the pics some have turned brown and the ones that were brown are slowly coloring back up. I know next time to remove the rock they come on, dip really heavy just to be safe and replace them on glass tiles. I don't need any extra friends in the tank.

The Ugly: I lost my achilles to ich. He came from a system that had copper and was in there for about 3 to 4 weeks. It also took out 4 of my lyretail anthias and maybe my blue hippo and Dejardini both of which I had for over 4 years. I still see them but they're not out swimming in the open like they used to.

So that's about it. Any advice or if you have any questions I'm all ears. Thank you everyone.

Being in copper is not a problem. If the tank they came from was having issues, in the first place, that would be why they have copper. A LFS (rozzens) near me has 1/2 in copper and the other half not. ALL their fish go into copper out of the bag. Just not the other items.

Sounds like the ICH was not all gone, from the copper treatment.

What are you going to do about the ICH possibility?

Nothing. The fish that are alive aren't showing any signs of it. Just going to keep up with my routine and keep them healthy and feed.

But the Dejardini and Pacific Blue are out and about now and a couple more of the lyretail anthias.

Wayne, the photos look awesome! Your tank seems to be coming along well. As far as the ich, I would soak your food in garlic and vitamins and keep them real fed. I am a big believer in UV if you haven't purchased a sterilizer yet.

Thank you Dan. I love how things are coming along. The food I make has garlic in it and aloe. I guess it's as they say ich is always in the tank. I'll think about the uv. Thanks again for the advice.

Good Luck with the ich situation... Would be very interested in seeing most fish pulling thru without having to remove the fish, as we all face such a dreadful ichy situation in this hobby... Wish you success as always

It's not ich. Well a little ich. For some reason if I add a fish to my system larger than 8 inches it seems like it's either loosing it's slime coat or some crazy fuzz on their bodies. The Achilles I couldn't get to eat all the way plus lack of flow probably did him in. But no excuse for my Vlamingi. I just don't get it. I am down to 2 Scopas Tangs and one Lyretail Anthias. Everyone else is healthy or looks healthy. Just don't know what's going on.

Did you send a sample of your water in anywhere? Perhaps you have some other bacteria growing. What about the use of UV or Ozone. Have you given it any consideration?

No I didnt. Was thinking about doing the triton test but don't know if they would identify the problem. As for a UV sterilizer, it's still a thought.

Just pray you don't get velvet!!
My experience with ich is if the fish are eating well they can usually beat it. That said you may notice sometimes when a tang for example gets stressed it will get ich spots and then a few hours later they are gone.

Thank god it wasn't velvet. I was rearranging some corals that fell and a piece of my rock structure. When I picked up the rock there was this ugly pink and black slime under the rock. Only to find out it was my pink and black sea Medusa Worm. I am pretty sure it was the culprit that took out the majority of my fish because they probably picked at it in its dead state and what was left over made it in the water column.

How have things been Leroy?

Things are things. I had no internal flow in my tank for over a week until my power supply for my WP60s came in. At the same time I cant use my gyres because my acrylic was to thick and I have to order the upgrade magnet to accommodate them. Someone from CoralVue suggested the suction cups for the Maxspects only to find out they only fit the original base and not the new noise reduction base. The downfall is because of lack of flow in the tank, other than provided by a 14 inch Vlamingi, i lost some colonies. Plus he was way bigger than I thought and he is knocking everything down that's not glued down so this is a new mission.

I also went back to Red Sea salt. I just didn't like how my corals were looking and it was inconsistent. This past weekend I performed an 80 gallon water change because life got busy and somehow the tank just looked totally different. I saw polyp extension on corals that usually didn't display. I am thinking about lowering my kalk dosing so that I can get my alk down to about the 7.5 dKh range. I will sacrifice growth for color.

Speaking of growth and color, as much as I love my Kessils, I have been thinking about adding some Build My Led strips. They can make a fixture that mimics the Iwasaki 6700 MH bulb. I figure with that spectrum and using the Kessils as accent for sunrise and sunset I should hopefully get the same amount or close of the growth you see in the ocean. No FTS update as the tank is in bad shape from the Vlamingi redecorating.
