Just curious... rather than using solar panels to make energy for the ballasts to run the bulbs... why not just use skylights for the tank?

The skylight IS for the tank. If you look back near the beginning of the thread, you'll see the polished Al duct coming down over the tank.

Amazing!

Handsome dog BTW. I had a chocolate (red), red nose APBT with heavy Carver breeding some years ago. He looked exactly like your dog.

Reef power, installing the solar electric system this week, about a 10KW system. 46 216 Watt panels.

that's all for now.

I LOVE this. I always struggle ethically with the tradeoff in increased power consumption we have with this hobby (I'm looking into buying offsets). Now you don't have anything to worry about, kudos!

Thanks for sharing Carl, truly some unique ideas.

I started a large build about a year and half ago, but had to stop in the middle because I learned there was a possibility that I was going to be moving (which I did last summer).

That would have really been a PITA after putting in all of that work and then have to tear it down.

We plan to restart a new one this summer. Not quite as epic as this one. But there are still a lot of great ideas to be borrowed here.

When you say it was “recommended to let your tank mature for a year” before putting any live stock into it. I am guessing it is to allow micro fauna to breed. Are you going to be feeding your tank during that year?

Thanks again. I am looking forward to following this one over the next several years.

i have also had some guilt about the energy use. not to mention the big electric bills my wife is not happy with.

here is the current tanks in my office. there is one frag/qt tank behind the big tank you can't see in the photo. i will be consolidating them into the new tank, more or less. anemone tank will not be going into the tank.

Wow...is that an office or an aquatic center??? So you are actually simplifying your life with the big tank!

yes that is theoretically correct but...

one unified body of water. i also have two 400 gallon tanks outside with the LR, one of them has four fish including a pair of Crosshatch Triggers that i absolutely adore. however i can only see them from above through the turbulent water. they may have to go into the tank along with the live rock as i can't put them in any of the inside tanks which are stocked as full as i want.

there is a giant skylight right over the tank. 1rst & second pics.

Oh, yeah. I remember that, duh! So the solar collectors dont have all that much to run then, do they?

HOLY COWS!!! You will pay for it in 6-7yrs? That is a great idea if you can make it worth it in 6-7yrs. AMAZING.

I live in South Dakota and we have a TON of windmills around here. Wonder if I could put a little one in my yard and harness the South Dakota wind for my reefs since we don't have as much sun as you?

do a little google searchingand you can find some personal windmills. try Realgoods.com

i still have many things to run without major lights over the tank.

i still need lights on the refusium, etc. in the garage, plus i will probably have some kind of lights on the tank just for evening viewing or maybe just a few moonlights. i will have to see how stuff grows.

PAR values yesterday at the bottom of the tank were about 700 when i measured midmorning. and then other parts of the tank were only 200 at that time but increased as the sun moved across the sky. it was a very sunny day yesterday.

i still have to enclose the open part of the tank which is 2 feet high and lets a lot of light escape into the room right now.

i've had some of the rock in the tank now for a couple of weeks. starting to get a thin layer of algae on the base rock especially. added a Diadema urchin last night.

while looking at the rock i saw this stuff growing. it has polyps at the end of the stem which are about 1/2" long.

GOOD or BAD? there are a few small colonies on the established rock.
