700 gallon tank, or how i spent my daughters inheritance

Glad you arent quitting , If you read this months tank of the month , you realise many people go through ups and downs in this hobby- It isnt cheap and sometimes when things go bad, one really questions if it is worth it but when things go well you have no doubt it is worth it to have the majestic spectacle of a reef in your home

Carl, i have a question.
do you have a external overflow box and a center overflow box??
it looks like you have teeth on the back side. is that an optical illusion.

my 2nd question/comment/suggestion

would you consider putting in a external overflow box? that way you could cut out the original peninsula overflow to give a more open tank.. i think your tank would look better without the center overflow.... my opinion. and i figured if you agreed, then this would be the perfect time to change.

if you go here and look at "carl's 300gal build at the bottom of the menu" i think your tank would look amazing like this but more tilt to the rock. (not so tall either)
its just a suggestion, and i would not want to change your make you build something that you dont want.. (that would be the last thing i want)
i am just throwing out ideas.... )

i am going to set up a couple of turf scrubbers thanks to Santa Monica and they will take about 200 watts to run.

just curious, didn't you already try an ATS and didn't you take it down?
and that's a lot of light and maintenance isnt it? didn't you have to clean the algae sheets quiet often?
(im lazy, so i don't know if a ATS would be my thing.....)

another thing, there is a guy in my local club that has a 415gal tank and installed a 1100 gal refugium. his tank was amazing, but he had a huge crash..... (he ran skimmerless for a long time.....)
he leads some of his devastation to his refugium taking too much of his essential elements out and starving his SPS of just about everything... (essentially, he claims that his water was too clean...)

im just saying that sometimes too much of a good thing is a bad thing.

and love your build.

Excited to see the rebuild. I would definitely consider a skimmer though. It doesn't have to be a large power hungry behemoth. If you intend to use algal filtration, then you could go with a smaller skimmer. It would help remove algal terpenoids and other dissolved organic matter. IME, algae filters work well with a skimmer of some sort.

I would also simplify the stuff in the garage. Less tanks and less plumbing will make it easier to do water changes(less volume) and less to worry about overall. JMHO :)

I can't belive you're electric bill is only $150. I thought stuff like electricity was more in California. We must be getting completely ripped off here in Illinois, because I'm running way less equipment on my 200 gallon system, and my bill has been topping $100 the last couple months, and thats without the air running.

yes, solar panels, 10 Kw system.

and a 4x8 skylight over the tank and the shaft lined with the aluminum of reflectors.

just curious, didn't you already try an ATS and didn't you take it down?

the new turf scrubbers from Santa Monica (banned here on RC) are easy to clean and very compact units. not like the unwieldy ones i had. they only need cleaning once a week or so for a few minutes.

maybe your friend wasn't feeding enough. i am skeptical about this idea of too clean water causing a crash.

about the overflows, yes there is an external one at the far end of the tank.

it has 3" teeth and 3 2" pipes to the sumps, a beananimal siphon overflow.

the center overflow has 2 2" overflows with one a siphon. i did think about removing it because i could probably get away with just having the end one now that there is no surge tanks putting up to 100 gallons into the tank in about 30 seconds. it was awesome but not without its downsides too. salt creep from the air bubbles, noise, and electric costs, humidity in the surge closet that had poor ventilation.

but i decided to leave it because that part of the overflow system gravity feed the carbon reactors, drip line and drain lines to wasted by turning a valve and draining into the sink and out.

i hope to more or less cover it with some live rock and make it mostly hidden.

Mark- i like having the stability and huge filtering capacity of the sumps, and the tanks over them can be used for different purposes too. right nbow the fish are mostly in one. the other is a DSB and has the few corals that i have.

and it's fun to watch strangers walk by the house when the garage door is open. i have given a mini talk about reefs to neighbor strangers.

i am very anxious about reaquascaping the tank but it will be fun too.

i am sure to buy something or other on thursday. first new additions to the tank in about a year since the crosshatch trigger.

i have the QT tank ready.

thank you all for your input.

Looks like Enrique From PFI did a great job!
I am glad you decided to use Tunze instead of energy hog close loop and maybe add some wave box to replace the surge... Lol
Good luck

Enrique did do a great job. in person there are still a few minor imperfections but what a huge difference. now the challenge is to keep it that way. i think part of the trick is to clean it much more regularly so that nothing builds up that has to be scrapped off.

if i ever do another tank i will opt for glass if possible. i considered it for this tank but didn't for several reasons- the weight, twice as much, we barely got this one in here. maintenance- only accessible from two sides easily. the hallway long side needs to only be accessed from the top via laying on the top of the tank on a foam covered piece of plywood. and the glass tank was more expensive and not made locally.

they are making some huge amazing tanks at PFI. the recent Jack in the box commercial features one of their tanks.

no wave boxes after talking with Roger at Tunze. see this discussion with Roger at Tunze.
http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1929090

the wave boxes need to have the top above water level and that would block the overflow.

I am curious in this new turf scrubber. I am interested in the design but cant see why it would be banned on RC???

Carl the tank looks great! i can't belive how nice it turned out after the polishing it's stunning. I too am glad that you haven't decided to quite (if eric wasn't having computer problems i'm sure he wouldn't have let you quite ;) )
I agree with you, i'm guessing that this person wasn't feeding enough. Most people in the hobby don't feed nearly enough food for their corals, but i think by you utilizing the ATS and DSB you'll be able to feed as much as you'd like.
My tank on here and marine depot is filtered by a DSB and ATS and has had 0-NO3 and 0-PO4 since the initial spike, so with such a large tank and water volume i think it'll work great. Can't wait to see the end product!

i am really happy to hear about your results with the DSB and ATS.

i miss Eric's words of wisdom a lot. i hope all is well with him and he just needed a break from us.

i awoke with a new worry about the tank. Enrique did not know what the buffing compound was made from. nor the cleaning liquid used on the inside of the tank. i am sure there is some residue left in the tank. i will wipe it all down with water a couple of times and hope it is enough. i guess i can fill it most of the way and let it run with sand and rock for a while before connecting it to the garage part of the system.

is there anything else i should be doing before putting livestock in the tank?

you could always get some vinegar and do a wash down with that....
(it might stink a little, but it might clean better then water if there is something....)

i don't have vinegar but i do have muriatic acid which is really just HCl. i could use a dilute solution of that.

I would stick with a ATS design that has at least two screens so you can clean them on different days. I had one screen on mine and it always bothered me that I would clean off all the turf and start fresh each time. No actual science to this worry just bothered me.
