my buddy has a 90 gallon he wants to set up.obviously not drilled so this is his question..i had no idea so told him i would ask the experts.im guessing bigger one for bigger turnover?? thanks

you are kindoff near the edge. at 5x turnover (which is a good number to aim for) you would be at 450GPH for which the 750 is fine - if you go up any it becomes borderline. the noise reduction by going to the large box probably makes it worth it alone.

I would personally do two 750's or a single 1500.

You can merge the drains together into a single 2" PVC if it helps keep the pump organized.

hey Jim!

hey Jim!

lotsa questions! Is it a reef aquarium? What kind of GPH will his pump be pushing? Least expensive (but low turnover option) would be a Mag9 in sump located in stand. He could get away with a 700GPH overflow. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Mags used for main circulation pumps because of heat transfer, but I don't know what yer bud wants to put into his project.

second the lack of liking mag pumps - there are better choices. either way the pump should be sized to the tank & plumbing to give the tank what it needs. even if you are under sized today for a pump I wouldn't limit the overflows.

The typical overflow box is nice, but it does get noisy as you poush more water through it, even with a cover.

I wouldn't do this. It severely affects the flow rate, as you're trying to force twice the water down a pipe with only a .5" increase in diameter.

I assume you are referring to the Glass-Holes 700/1500GPH overflow kits? Brian (and then Travis) had a 120G with the 700 and it worked pretty good. I've used the 700 on a few different tanks, both around 60G and it was overkill. The biggest thing to keep in mind is what kind of turnover you plan to achieve (and with what pump), in-tank circulation via power powerheads and as gary said what you plan to keep in the aquarium.

While the GH kits are simple and easy to install, your friend can also get in touch with a few members here (Acdraindrps made mine) to custom make an overflow. A custom made box can still be low-profile but also utilize the various plumbing designs/techniques for a silent drain, far from the loud noise of the GH kits.

I thought my GH kit was pretty quit....as long as I didn't try and crank flow through it.
Who has my 120 now? lol I would love to buy it back right now...lol

I've seen different numbers on how much you can gravity drain on a pipe which is vented. regardless - the relationship is not linear due to the resistance of the sidewalls on the pipe - much like a supply line of 1-1/4 pushes more than 1/4 more water than a 1".

using RC calcullator (http://www.reefcentral.com/index.php/drainoverflow-size-calc):

1.5" - 1350 GPH
2" - 2350 GPH

on a 90 gallon tank with a 10x turnover (twice what you really need) you are at 900GPH - I would have no reservations aggregating to a 2" pipe.

from the monster fish keeper site (numbers pretty close to what I got on the calculator):

3/4" = 330 gph
1" = 600 gph
1 1/4" = 910 gph
1 1/2" = 1,300 gph
1 3/4" = 1,800 gph
2" = 2,350 gph
2 1/4" = 2,960 gph
2 1/2" = 3,650 gph
2 3/4 = 4,450 gph
3" = 5,280 gph

You gotta think in terms of cross sectional area, not diameter. (pi*r^2)

If noise is a concern in the least, I would second Johnny's suggestion to consider a custom box with a Herbie or beananimal style overflow. GH overflows are nicely made, perform well, and can be kinda quiet if you tune them carefully, but a Herbie or Bean can be 100% completely, utterly, DEAD silent. It's a night and day thing.

oversized drains/pumps aren't my thing. it really depends on what he wants his sump to accomplish. many people seem to want to rip water threw their sump. i'd rather give my cyptic zone,skimmer, reactors time to process water. i've got a mag and a single drain on my 90. i don't feel cheated. surface skimming, is nice . i 'd rather use in tank power heads for flow. lots of cheap 90's out there. i don't think i'd sink too much cash into one. it would really depend on what type of tank your friend wants. would he be happy with a fish only or softy tank ? or is he the type that wants a full blow reef with all the bells and whistles?
