75g sps build thread

Ok so today I did a 12g water change, scrubbed as much algae as possible and I replaced my GFO with bio pellets so we will see how that goes. I only added a little to the reactor, swapped out an old AC20 powerhead for a MJ900 to run the reactor and moved the reactor nest to my skimmer the reactor discharge goes to the skimmer.

Ok little update. I have gotten the algae issues under control. Some new clean up crew members, not being lazy about water changes and the bio pellets seem to be doing the trick. I must say I should have tried out the pellets a lot sooner algae growth has noticeably decreased and the snails are taking care of the rest a little at a time. I got a MJ 900 to replace the old modded MJ 600 that the impeller was starting to rust but the new style MJ 900 was really loud. Thanks to a local member I got another Evo 1050 for a few frags and even got some red and orange caps to color up, thanks Pete. So now my flow is back to where is needed to be. Next on the list is some new bulbs and RODI filters. Oh I dont think I posted this, a few months ago my Tyree neon green leather that was the size of a large grapefruit asexually reproduce by dropping about 15-20 small heads off the main head. I sold and gave some away but I still have like 3-4 little babies floating around finding spots to settle and grow. Something else I have been wanting to do is redo my sump plumbing and redo my sump with something a little larger with a 10G ATO res built in. I will post up some good pics of my tank fish and corals later today after work.

Looks like things are healthy.

my question, and please dont take this the wrong way, why does mostly everything look brownish and devoid of vivid color?

^^^^ LOL I get that a lot, it the crappy cheap old camera I am using. I need to play with the settings on it again so I can get the best representation of the colors. Most of my acros and milles have nice blue tips but the camera can not seem to pick up the blues.

never heard of a "camera" making colorfull corals look brown.

I have heard of no3 and po4 doing that though !

Really a crappy camera with no white balance will make the corals looked washed out and/or not capture the true to eye colors. Sorry I dont have a $500+ camera it is an old Coolpix with a broken battery door, I am working with what I have in the camera department. N03 and P04 are near zero, undetectable on my kits.

:) lol

in first pic, I see the camera captured the RED fish very well ! yet could not capture the RED birdsnest ?

I see blue on the clam, yet not on acros,

I see red again on the chalice ... lol

my conclusion is that your camera is not letting you capture colors of corals only, cause its mad you arent fixing its broken battery door. lol

but dont worry, I wont point out the last pics with bubble algae and hair algae and .... which are growing in ZERO no3 and po4 tank.

come on !

sorry to interupt. im new to reefs n thought id start with a local system. its been runnin about two months. i have like 20 years experience w/ freshwater, but not much salt. im a long time clammer in nj n have harvested everything in my tank, even the sand, from the wild (NOT the beach, incase anyone is wondering)with the exception of the ornaments n the water, which i mixed just because gettin my 90gal tank on my second floor apt filled with seawater fill seamed unnecessary.
currently, i have about 40 or 50 pounds of dead liverock n ornaments submerged in the wild with 1/4 inch chicken wire shielding out some uv (tho im not sure this is necessary)
to limit excessive plant growth. i have not looked at it since i planted it a week ago nd dont plan to for as long as i can handle it. my questions lie with how to harvest and/or stimulate growth of local tubeworms n corals that r native to my locality or specificly the north atlantic.

The camera pics up red just fine its blues, pinks and greens it will wash out. I dont have a red birds nest I do have a pink BN that is placed low and it gets nice pink on the upper branches and would be all pink if I had placed it higher but I did not want to. I also dont have any chalice corals in my tank. Dont talk crap unless you come see my tank in person the colors are very different in person. I know about the algae issues and stated that in an earlier post, it is my fault to to lack of care over the last few months on the tank, life gets busy and days are short. I said my test kits (API no3 and Elso po4 not the low res kit) are not picking up any no3 or po4 but it is there obviously because of the algae growth I am running 250w 20K MH for lighting, no actinics. I have since started bio pellets and that has stopped the algae growth, no new growth and receding old growth.
Ok here are pics taken today, I am not the best photographer either. I will see if my friend RippinFrags will come by with his camera and take some pics.

Idk, I've got quite a bit of bubble algae in my tank and I can assure you, it's not a nutrient issue (I'll post pics if necessary) In fact I'm quite sure bubble algae can thrive even in an ulns. While some of his corals arent as vibrant as they could be I dont see why its necessary to rag on him about it.

Give it a rest man...this is his build thread not a debate topic.

Bubble alage can and will grow with very limited nutrients.

Well bio pellets are working nicely, no new algae growth where before within a week I would have more bubble and hair algae growing. I have MJ 900 which is plenty to fluidize the pellets but they are still clumping up, they actually clumped up in suspension. I can see the change in skimate and there is more sooner, fills the cup in like 2-3 days never did that when dosing vodka.
