75g sps build thread

Ok should be getting the tank stand and canopy this thursday. Then the refinishing of the stand and modifying the canopy will start.

No not dry rock I think it is Fiji LR but I got is so long ago cant remember. I gave it to my brother who used tap water on his tank and really let the tank go.

Got board and went to HomeDepot to price out some things needed for the tank. 98% of the plumbing, wood satin, paint and silicon will run me about $60. Should be able to pick it all up in the next week of so.

Ok now for a real update. Picked up the tank, stand and canopy. Got about 50-60lbs of sand, enough to fill a 5g bucket. So far I have cleaned up the inside of the tank as you can see it had a lot of coralline algae. Some of it was really thick and took some hard scraping to remove.

I think I will reseal the vertical seals. The tank held water just fine but I dont like how they look.

Now I need to go rinse the crap out of the sand, literally. More updates to come as things progress. Should be drilling the tank on sunday if I get my 3/4 return bulkhead. Will be refinishing the stand in my spare time as well as work with the canopy.

Update. So I decided to make some changes to my plumbing, I was going to drill the tank and hard plump the return line. After some thought I decided not to, instead I will run a flex line and save some money. Turns out the bulk head I wanted to use for the return (1/2) is only made in ABS not SCH80, I dont trust ABS bulkheads. Did some major sanding on the stand, what a messy pain in the butt. Was up til 12 AM working on it, plan is to finish all the sanding and staining today after work. I will get some pics up of the stand progress later today.
Can anyone give me tips on resealing the tank, pretty sure I can do just like a little direction.

Here is what I got done today on the stand. Got it all ready for staining and did 98% of the staining on it. I will need to finish up the bottom tomorrow after it dries. On a side note I got a promotion at work today, made my day.

I should be finishing up the staining on the stand tomorrow then I need to seal it. I will also sand the canopy so that is done and out of the way. Have not started to modifications to the canopy yet. Plan is to make it so it will swing open and house my lighting. I should also be drilling the tank for my overflow tomorrow, as long as I can get the hole saw. I picked up a DJ power strip yesterday for the build as well.

looks great so far. im in the middle of building my 75 as well so i'll be following your thread. did you have the drill on high speed when you drilled your tank? im probably gonna drill mine tommorow.

Have to ask....are you going to put the leathers in the new tank? I was doing a search on the internet about carbon and happened upon a thread where a guy couldn't get his SPS to color up...ended up resolving the issue by removing his leathers.

Thanks. I don't trust the pvc bulkheads.

I thought you said you didn't trust the ABS bulkheads..?

Nothing is really bulletproof.

I actually prefer the CPVC bulkheads myself, they cost a little more, but I think they are stronger.
:)

Stand is looking good BTW.

No I drilled pretty slow let the saw d the cutting. Took me about 5 minutes to cit the whole. The tape helped hold the slug in place after it is cut out and with chipping
