Hey all you larger tank guys...

so the choices are ...

4 vortechs....

or 2 large tunze streams and 1 large tunze wavebox...

what is everyones thoughts on this size tank?

I think tunze 6205 is much more stronger any vortech out there and you need 2 wave box to get decent wave

I would go 2-6105's on each side of the tank, or 1-6205 on each side of the tank for high flow. If you want moderate flow, 1-6105 on each side is sufficient. A wavebox is not necessary, but is fun to watch the corals sway back and forth.

FWIW, I have a 96x30x30 tank with 4-6100's which was too much, now I have 3-6100's which is more than adequate.

I also had a friend who had the wavebox on his 450g tank which measured 96x36x30 and it worked fine for wave action, so I don't believe two is necessary unless you really want to rock the house.

whats your feelings on wave box and stream vs vortech ?

i never used a wavebox ... i currently have vortechs on my 150 and the tank looks good...

not sure what to really expect or should i desire wavebox over vortech route?

I can not comment on vortech pumps as I have never used them. My experience is strictly with Tunze as they have been around for a long time and their customer service is tough to beat. Vortech pumps were not even around when I built my 375g and 470g tanks.

I have 2 new 6215 and still not making big wave
It might be the placement but it too bulky to be on the other side. But the soft corals looks awesome waving back and forth

Customer service and warranty is a lot better from I observe

vortech's customer service is great, but on an 8 ft. tank you'd want 3-4 vortechs or more. You can get some pretty durn powerful tunzes, or as you said a wavebox.

Be careful though, some rimless aren't meant to handle waves.

Have you thought of a closed loop using OM 4way and hammerhead pump
For the return pump use a pressure rated at about 2000+ then use 4 PENDUCTORS. No powerheads or wave boxes needed.

Penductors increase the flow 4 to 5 times. You need at least 500 gallons to each one to get the max benefit from them. you would be 8000 to 10000 gph of flow.

With a hammerhead depending on how far away it is you can increase your random flow by another 5000 to 6000 GPH

Over all flow would be 13000 to 18000 which is perfect to keep your sand down, keep just about any coral you desire and have a nice clean look with no power heads.

Well close loops is good if it is done right but very energy Inefficient
i only had 3 tunze 6205 on my tank it's more than enough 20000 gph with dart return and all of these for less than 250 watts and 128 for the reeflo alone.
but wave box makes it better so I got two and remove one 6205 and it's not unsightly at all

I have 3 mp40's on my 215 6'tank. You will need atleast 4 for an 8' tank. They are nice pumps with no wires in the tank and alot of great features. Customer service is great so far too. They sent me 2 new wet sides for my pumps already. They were used when i bought them and i used them for a year. So it wasnt too bad. 8' is alot of tank to cover though.

I am not a fan of closed loops for a couple of big reasons. One, they are permanent. This means that once you drill that hole you are stuck with it. The permanent hole doesn't allow much flexibility for future growth or plans for the tank. Two, they are not energy efficient at all.

Powerheads can be moved, adjusted for all kinds of scenarios and turned off and on at a whim. They move a lot more water for a whole lot less wattage too.

i am staying away from closed loop on this tank...

i had it years ago on a large tank and it always made me nervous.....

i like the idea of stream type pumps as they can move crazy amounts of water and in a broad stream...

My old tank was 96 x 36 x 28. I had the tank plumbed for CL, had Vortecs and Tunzes. I had the tank drilled for CL simply for at the time I was putting the tank together CL was more popular than they are nowand I always hated ph in the tank. Once I set the tank up I found that it wasn't that great, at least in my experience. I ended up plugging the holes and then went the Vortec route. I like the Vortecs for the lack of real estate they took up in the tank. I did have some issues with the wet sides falling off but these were the 1st generation and perhaps they fixed that. I also found Vortecs to be a bit noisy (IMO) when you have 4 of then running. Next I added some Tunzes and found them to be almost silent althought they are an eye sore IMO. What I'm getting at is there are advantages and disadvantages to each. My personal favorite has been Sea Swirls I had on my old 260. Really liked the mov't they provided although you can't get as much flow down low as you can with a ph. Think you have to weigh out what you want more...less mechanics to lok at in the tank or more silent flow. Good luck.

if i may ask... im just setting up my new tank which is L72"xW36"xH26". And i currently have (1) 6105, (1) 6205 and (2) 6055. I have a 7096 to control the pumps. One side of the whole width of the tank is my overflow. My question is how should i place my pumps? does my pumps are overkill?

Since you already have the Vortechs, why not try setting them on wave mode, and supplement with 2 or 3 6100's? While a vortech won't put out as large of a wave as the wavebox, if you have a couple slaved together I'd think they could give the WB a run for its money, and keep detrius suspended. The 6100's should provide plenty of flow.
If you give this a try, please post with your thoughts with how well this works- it's what I'm planning on doing in a 300.
