8 viewing vs. 75 on Upstate forums

Do we really have that many fewer reefers in the Binghamton, Elmira, Ithaca region than the Rochester region or is it that the Southern Tier Reef Soceity with 8 viewing vs the 75 viewing the Upstate forum simply because there is more activity in general on the Upstate forums?

My guess is some of both - but consider the cities the two groups cover. Upstate has Rochester and Buffalo, along with a zillion small towns. STRS is, like you mentioned, Binghamton, Ithaca, Elmira, and maybe Syracuse, along with all the other REALLY small towns. The numbers alone are dramatically in their favor.

Plus, Upstate has been around a lot longer, most of us were members there before SRTS started. A lot of us still read that board, but I doubt many of them come over here all that often.

Rougly 10 times more activity on the URS.

I go both places all the time. If I am interested in something specifically local I post here. More general questions I post on URS. My reasoning is that there are more people there to get a variety of respones and most of the people here visit that forum anyway so I will get the STRS responses and URS reponses. Kill two birds with stone. If it is something local to Binghamton, Elmira, Ithaca, I post here so as not to confuse those on the URS with trades or store questions.

URS is very big. They have the most threads and the most posts for any club forum in the northeast and are in the top 10 nationally. Chicagoland and Southern Cal have more than double URS with some of the Florida, northern Cal, and Arizona clubs about the same as URS.

I gotta give it up to URS. More action, more threads. Not that STRS doesn't have interesting theads......

For the longest time I was an outsider in Syracuse, then I got flanked by STRS which elevated my rank to "Tweener". I never jump on RC without checking both clubs

I would have to say it would be due to a few things one URS started wayyyyyy before us. two they have way better LF stores. three they have way older/more knowledgeable people that have been reef keeping since the 80's. four the population of buffalo and surrounding municipalities equals the population of Binghamton, Elmira, and Ithaca combined. Plus in our area down here we haven't been really advertising STRS like when we first put it together. I know i haven't put any flyers out since the first 6 months we started the forum. So the only way people hear about it is word of mouth and there are alot more mouths in Rochester, buffalo and Cuse'. as well as what Cully said most of the Cuse' go between both as well as alot of the STRS people due to that is where we ourselves originated from.
sorry for the long rant...lol

So If you want a more hopping forum I can give you the flyer design we had and you can pot them in the stores around you. If people would put them up in elmira im sure that would draw attention in. But in the Binghamton area I was rejected from putting them up in the local fish stores. If you think about it our fish stores suck around here so if they were promoting STRS they would have even less business than they do now because we ourselves promote online shopping or ABC reefs due to how crappy the stores in our area are.

I browse both. URS has been around about 5 times longer too so that has something to do with it. Plus the stores they have breed a very active reef community.
