9 new Banger additions

Thanks D. The one time I let my male hold longer than the 21 days (about a week and a half ago), I lost them all. I believe that he was still too new (and hungry too) and ate them. My 2 batches that I am growing out now have been stripped out at the 3 week mark. I have another male in my display that is approaching the 3 week mark and I am going to have to do some night time fishing this weekend to get him out and strip them from him. Good luck with getting the Bangers....and don't be fearful of stripping the babies, it seems traumatic at first but the sooner you get them out of him at that 3 week mark I feel the better. I am sure the poppa does swallow some and the longer he goes without nutrition the hungrier he gets.

Rich

how do you go about stripping the babies out of the males mouth.
i usually catch the male in a net, give the net a few shakes and usually the babies come out into the net.

I have a bowl of tank water ready and as soon as I net the male, I drop him in the bowl and he releases them in the bowl so they don't get injured in the net.

Haven't stopped in for a while, so I am dropping in for a big update..... I have the babies moved over to the JBJ Nano. I did a speedy cycle with established Rock and sand and then a 100% water change when the Nitrites were just about zero. I had to hurry as I had two males holding and I had to get some things worked out quickly. Here is a pic of the Nano with the litle ones establishing themselves.

...and another.

For those that are curious..I have an internal refugium in the tank with the left flow from the filter pump pushing in the circulation holes. Those holes are covered with fine netting to keep anything from going out or coming in. In the foreground on the left there is an upside down bird waterer with the top taken off (looks like a big test tube) it is attached to the side with a magnet with a rubber band around the glass to keep it from slipping through. I have an airline pushing water in to keep the fry circulating. This is supplied by the small pump that came with the CPR internal Refugium. I connected it to the airhose with a plunger from my aptasia-X kit. it is keeping them in a slow tumble as can be seen in this video.

and here is a few macro shots of the little ones. These guys were stripped of the male a week early. My fault...I didn't do the math correctly. Hope these guys make it. The poppa is in holding getting fattened up. I have another male that is holding as of today.

8 are left out of the first batch of 9. 1 of them had an episode of sudden fright and didn't make it. It was during my first transfer from the 10 gallon to the 28 gallon for growing them out. Then when that one leaked, I had to transfer them back and one of the ones from the second batch had an episode and didn't make it. Then like history repeating itself....when the second growout was cycled, one of the little guys from the second batch had an episode. So, I have lost 3 over the last month. Disheartening to say the least. But, I am not going to let it stop me.

Thanks for the kudos....

How about some more eye candy. Not much has changed but I took some more pics when I got home from work this eve.

Top down of the in tank Refugium of the newest fry. I had to move them from the test tube because some of the stronger swimmers were swimming right out of the top.

Supper time for the older siblings. I gave them some 12 hour bbs to stuff their bellies. I still don't see them all take the prepared foods enthusiastically. So they were happy tonight.

I wanted to add something interesting. I'm not trying to keep my baby Cardinals but they got sucked in the corner overflows (probably the bottom grates on it) and they wound up in the bubble algae tank/refugium in my sump. The millions of tiny bugs in there have sustained them for about 4 weeks now and they are growing nicely, today was the first time I feed them some freeze dried cyclopeez with a turkey baster and they went at it pretty good. There were 6 now 5. This happened to me a few years ago as well, the babies were siphoned from the tentacles around and under my anemone, which explains why they never got eaten. I dumped them in the fuge i had at the time and, can't quite remember but I think it was 4 to adulthood. Then I move accross the country in winter and pretty mch had to start from scratch.

Sorry for the dissapearing act. I still have 5 remaining from the batch in February. Through a couple of moves and a series of non-eaters when I switched to Oto and frozen mysis I lost all others. The 5 remaining are healthy and eat Mysis vigorously. I still can't get them to take pellet or flake like their parents, but I am happy with them eating frozen foods. They are about an inch and a half long at this point. I have left quite a few batches go in the display tank and breeder tank due to not having enough time to pamper them. I have 3 males with 2 females that are almost non-stop in breeding. I keep bouncing the odd male out into quarantine when he starts holding. There is a male holding now that is just days away from releasing and of course it is going to happen just before I take a trip for a week. I am torn to as to what to do with them. I should let them go, but what has me torn this time is that I know he is holding alot more this time than I have ever seen before. Past batches were only in the single digits. I think these guys need to go through a few for practice so that they can hold them to term without eating them or spitting them when they are startled.

Thinking more about it....I will probably just let him release them and see how many are left after a week goes by. The breeder tank that he is in is loaded with Xenia and the little ones always seem to migrate into that forest for protection. I will also probably take the filter sock off so as to not capture the pods that could be their food source for a week and turn off the Vortech pumps. The tank will be fed daily with a frozen cube of mysis and / or enriched brine shrimp. So they will have a food souce coming in everyday, just not the pampering with live brine that I normally start them with. Who knows, this may be successful and I find that I was pampering them too much.

Changed my mind.....caught the poppa last night and moved him to a 10 gallon quarantine. Moved the male that I had in quarantine in with the female that I just removed the male from.....did that make sense? :-) Within 15 minutes she was dancing around him and happy as a lark. He was still a bit skiddish and was trying to get away from her. But I suspect that he will be holding within the next week.

I guess when the male releases here in the next day or so, I will start immediatley on Oto and the small bits and pieces left from a frozen cube. I will try to never start again on live BBS...way too hard to wean them off of it.....and a big PIA for me.

Anyone know of a good way to sell the Banggai babies? My LFS seems to have zero interest in them. He seems to prefer getting the wild caughts in from his vendors. I know I am going to get some responses here saying "I'll take them" :) Should I list them in the for sale forums here on RC? Anyone have any luck with that? I just can't imagine shipping these little guys.

I was stricken with good luck today. My LFS took all 5.
So, I can start fresh again and hopefully work with a larger brood this time.

Your LFS made a good call on taking the tank raised over wild caught. I don't know that stats, but the wild caught do not have a good survival stats. Tank raised bangaii are in high demand around my area. From what I read, we may not see wild caught bangaii for much longer.

I am just finishing an eight 20 gal broodstock rack and I am going to put a couple of bangaii pairs in the mix due to what I believe will be a shortage of this variety.

I have heard the same thing. If we are successful with this batch we are considering setting up 2 10g and 2 40g for breeding. We have 2 pairs now.
Would you mind sharing a picture of you set up?

One of our lfs owners came over and already offered to buy all the babies.

not sure if its a violation of forum rules but if you offered shipping, i'm sure there would be a few takers here.

how long from birth before they start pairing off?

Good to hear others breeding bangais,I currently have 19 at the 10 week mark.My male is holding again.I enjoyed your vids.

I wish you good luck. What have you been feeding them?

I am sure this thread would have gotten shutdown for that one. I think the proper way would have been to post in the for sale and direct the subscribers to this thread to the for sale forrums. But luckily I don't have to go through the shipping headache now.

I didn't start seeing the heirarchy form with the males until month 6 - 7. I hadn't seen any pairing at all during the 7 months that I had them. Someone else may be able to chime in with their experience.

My LFS had all kinds of interest up front when I was purchasing the adults to pair. But when it came down to it his interest waned. I am sure it had to do with knowing that if he puts these beside his wildcaught, he is going to have an issue with selling them due to their pricing. Bottom line...he is in business to make money. You'll find a low percentage that are interested in making money along with helping to save the environment.

I have heard the same and that is what made me want to do my little effort to help. Would love to see your setup as well. share share share :)

Wow, I just read the whole thread. What a journey. And thanks for keeping your thread alive.

I slowed down over the summer as life got in the way....now that winter is around the corner I should be more consistent.
