9005 or 230/3

Hi Roger

I am in the process of setting up a 67g (48X18X18) mixed reef which will run without a sump. I currently have a 230/3 which I could use; it obviously does not produce incredibly dark skimmate and while it is quiet as skimmers go, it is by no means silent. The air intake on the 230/3 is actually connected to a silencer and cannot be heard unless you press your ear against the silencer - most of the noise seems to come from the water swirling around in the reaction chamber.

So, is the 9005 likely to be a better option for this system, in terms of noise (which is very important for this tank) and skimmate quality? Or am I unlikely to notice the difference between the 2 products?

Thanks

230 has a stronger pump than 9005, which is the replacement of 3115. If you want to see the difference you should try DOC 9010 or 9020.

I realise the pump on the 230 is stronger - the skimmer is rated for 1200l. However, the system I am setting up is small at 67g, and since the skimmer is going to sit inside the tank, the 9005 seems like a good option (I'm not sure I need the performance of the 9010 and I don't need the fittings to mount the 9005 in a sump).

What I really want to know is if the 9005 is noticably quieter than the 230, and if the quality (not necessarily quantity) of skimmate is likely to be noticably better (darker). If the 9005 will not noticably outperform the 230 in either of these two areas, I will stick with the 230...

Thanks

I agree with COCO, I think the 9010 would be the best fit for what you are wanting, in terms of performance and quietness. I have ran a 9005 on a system that was a little bigger, and while it did perform well, I thought with the bioload that was on the system the 9010 would definitely work out better.

IMO.........the 9010 ia a better deal. The 9005 requires you to buy a "sump" kit for approx $40. By the time you add up the 9005 and the sump kit, you are almost the same $$$ as the 9010. Unless you find a deal on a used skimmer.........best deal for new is the 9010. I am running a 9005 in sump, only because I got a good deal on a used one.........otherwise I was going to buy a new 9010. The 9005 is very quiet........the quietest skimmer I have ever run/heard. A lot quieter than any Remora or Remora Pro I have used.
