A. Chrysopterus juvi ID

actually it can be a juv coloration, these things (chyso) take awefully long to develop into adults, not to mention the blue stripes. They are known to be a sunk cost to breeders (like GSM).

I'm going to be pretty angry bluezoo if its a clarkii, they are so much cheaper than a chrysopterus. Why do you have trouble keeping chrysopterus? I have had these two since april 3rd. I had to treat them with cupramine because they had ich. They have been free from ich for a month and a half now.

I am sticking to my guns, clark's clown.
as to the Chrys, maybe you got lucky. all the ones I had suffered heavily from shipping stress and were loaded with disease. I only have two LFS here that would order them and they have stopped altogether as they also couldnt keep them alive. most mail order companies wont even guarantee them to come in alive. just the nature of the beast. even ron popiel tried multiple times before he finally got a pair to acclimate.
I had two fish that made it through QT, but when they were moved to their display tank they came down with some other funk and died about 3 days later. I suppose they are just really fragile and cant tolerate the stress of being moved.

Thanks for all the comments everyone..maybe his tail will turn white or yellow as he gets older..only time will tell. I am a bit worried about moving them to the display tank. I think that maybe I should set up another tank and put them in there after the new tank matures for 3 months. The two seem happy in the QT. I didn't practice any QT procedures with the fish that are in the 120 display tank. They all seem healthy and haven't shown any signs of desease or parasites. That doesn't mean there isn't any ich in there though..right?
stykthyn..How did you catch them to move them to your display?..with a clear plastic fish catcher or did you use a net? I am not moving them to the display..I'm just curious. :)

adtravels what kind of anemone is that in one of those pictures..a haddoni? I'm trying to decide if I should wait for a mertensii (which are rarely in the trade) or will they happily accept a haddoni.

the only decoration in the QT tank was an old vase.I chased them into the vase and used that to transport them into the DT.

its a chrysopterus. your female is what ive typically seen come in from the solomon islands, and your male what usually comes from the fiji/tonga area. the older fish ive seen all have only had the little white notch on their tail, but the babies i raised had the white extending over the top of the tail like you see on yours.

here is one that had thick stripes and looked similar to yours i received from LA several years back:

and heres one of an itty bitty fellow with the white over the tail....

Thanks, I was hoping you were going to say that..I just noticed a change in the color of his tail. It got me questioning on its ID again:p

I see that yours were in a sebae I'm wanting to get a carpet..I want a mertensii but I know I'm dreaming..fat chance of getting one of those. Do you think they'll be happy with a haddoni?

Oh good Christina - I'm glad that it seems it is a chrysopterus afterall!

I hope that proves to be the case! I can't wait for you to get a new anemone for them! :)

ive had chrys in haddoni carpets and they do very well with them. im actually looking for a blue carpet for a future pair. it should look pretty sweet.

I can't imagine what it would look like..do you think they will blend in? With the blue stripes and all ..lol I am being silly :p..seriously though, I still can't imagine what it would look like. I was thinking about a red, purple or neon green.

Yeah Christina - I think you should scrap the idea of waiting on the mertensii and just get a cool Haddoni! :)

The only thing I am worried about with having a sand dwelling anemone is..will it be ok with my sea biscuit sand dollar? I just got the sea biscuit two weekends ago.

If it comes near a Haddoni, I would expect it to be eaten. Over half of the oral disc of mine is on the sand bed (( the other half up against the rocks ))

I wouldn't put it past them. I've been lucky with fish, but one of mine took down a queen conch without issue.
