A General Guide to Salt Mixes

Fishkepper, you have been sending me emails to argue your point and that is fine but Billybeau's post above indicates that he prefers that people not get into a "salt war" on this thread.

My experience was my experience. So maybe we could just leave it at that, okay? :)

you some times you have to add some buffers i just talk to him and he told me with this new salt after 24 to 48 hrs to check ph and alk of the un used water i made up and i may have to ph buffer it befor i use it

If someone has a bad experience and an opinion they're entitled to share it without someone suggesting they screwed it up in order to defend a particular favorite product.. Most folks here understand how to mix and use salt.

So, has anyone gotten any of the new Seachem Auqavitro yet ?

I'm dying to test this stuff. :D

After all, you all know I'm a testing fool :jester:

I'm getting a sample of GetTanked salt. I'll test and post results for Ca, dkh, magnesium.
I've been looking for a salt that has a higher measurement of potassium "out of the box."
Each of our systems are unique to how will built them and what our inhabitants are. Let's keep having fun..
thanks to all who post. great work..

Billy:

Glad to see the new IO is out and measured up to what I was told semiprivately in January.

Now I guess I don't need to boost it any more. :)

Do you routinely measure potassium in your tank?

LL

Ca usuallly mixes up in the mid to low 300s.

Alk usually 7 to 8 dkh.

Mag is always very low. I add mag flakes before I add salt. It still mixes up around 1200 I think.

The bad batches of ro from a year or so ago were lower.

All test kits are seachem. I target 400 12 and 1400 for water change water so I will always probably need to dose some.

No, I don't measure for potassium. I should. I actually don't know of a good test kit either. Their probably is one out their.

This all started when I found a study completed by AWT, aquarium water testing, in 2008. The study showed that Red Sea Coral Pro salt had an average level of 232.5 mg/l of postassium. I want to better my system and increase my blue SPS health.
I don't know what level of potassium is in NSW, but some of our local club members suggested that I should attempt to increase my levels to, around, 380 mg/l. Thoughts?

about 370-380 is what is present in NSW i believe. Increasing your potassium should help blue corals, as well as all of your others corals... and you're right, many salts are lacking a bit in potassium.

I too am on the same salt search as you, i'm trying out gettankedaquariums formula 2 at the moment...

Yes, I was thinking about you when I got the results and figured you'd have to add less supplement initially. Since you do not test, I figured your numbers would be up from the norm after using the new IO. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing. :lmao:

and you're right, many salts are lacking a bit in potassium.

What makes you claim that? The AWT published salt tests are not reliable, IMO.

You personally have seen a sudden increase in blue colors when adding potassium?

Quite true. That's a drawback of the "almost never test" method. :D

With my new business I find mixing alot of salt in ro/di water and delivering it in 5 gal pails. Occasionaly I have had a 5 gal pail left over and forgot it in the garage or the trunk over the weekend. Is this salt water still safe to use?
