This was my first design job on a grille. I didn't build it because the guy was a cheapskate. He ended up putting over $6K in it then sold it for $4K. What a dick!

Well you know him I dont so Ill take that reponse as a "not gonna happen". The BBQ scene has been big last few years. Seems like everyone wants one. Myself included. We do alot of stainless work here so Im waitng for some high dollar mistakes so I can capitalize on the scrap and make mine out of some 3a or some XL suede lol..I got a guy here who can polish like a mirror too good guy. Thats an art in itself. Most of the Claim units in the airports our company makes and installs. We own the maintance company that keeps the baggage conveyors running as well. All the Stainless in the airports is done here. Havent had a job requiring any but its will come sooner or later. When it does Ill be there like a vulture with a tape measure. Thts how Im building my stand right now out of 1.5 x 1.5. x .120 Sq A36. we make the legs to those claims out of the same material so when they screw up a cut on the saw in my truck it goes lol..Im just about there now. Same here I do alot of CAD for my own projects.
Sititng on a CAD to 90% of the day. Back and forth Surf the net do alittle CAD. So hot here this time of year not much else to do. 91% humidity today. Likely to kill ya for mowing the lawn on days like this. You can the vapor in the air looks like Vietnam or something. Good day to have a BBQ and a cold one under a shade tree and just relax.
Yea thats what Im talking about!!! Thats a mans Q right there. Thats a sweet cooker. If I had that Id have to put a remote control linear actuator on the side so I could open the hood like I was displaying my meat as if it was holy grail lol..

Man, what I could do with that my brain is awash with add ons lol... Collapsible shelving the works lol... It would blind people when I pulled it out.

I was just in OH last summer. Went to Cedar Pointe. Love that place. Whats up with that Draggster ride? I have no fear of death now after that!!!! Sheesh nothing like swallowing your eyeballs back into your skull. We spent 4 days camping in OH before heading back to FL. Never seen so many cabbage farms lol. I used to go to the Jeep plant in Toledo alot too. I designed some stuff for there R & D dept's clean room back in the day. Ive driven on the co. test track too. Jeeps come off the line and they run them thru this track has hills, simulated rain and skid pad. I took our co. truck for a run lol... I had that old Chevy 3/4 ton wincing in pain when I was threw lol....good times.

this grille had an add-on gear motor driven rod lifter. 2 arms scoop up the quick release spit rod and rotate it 60 deg. up and forward so the meat can be carved witht ther or the works can be more easily removed. I sketched up an air-spring system that made the lid about 5lb. lift force operational and held it steady fro 45 deg. and above. Again, great idea, noone to bankroll it. That stuff would blow peoples minds but won't make the food any better tasting....
I still have all details, assembly's, and BOM's for every grill I've pu to CAD. They bought the prints not the concept or my time and thoughts. I'd give it all up if they'd payed but..... They didn't!
Yup, we're about 2 hrs. for Cedar Point. Been there many times. I like going in the fall when the crowds are small.

C'Mon man the thing can lift the spit and move it forward? Thats nuts. No wonder you didnt sell it the meat moving around with a rod liftr scared the hell out of them lol....Thats too cool. Whats next? Thats a tough nut to crack now. Your gonna have to sell that thing or it will drive you mad.

No, you don't understand. I didn't build it, I just designed it. the guy who made it failed to pay me for the rod lifter and lid lifter designs so all he got was one set of incomplete details and no BOM's for 'em. I took the Pix of the SS grille in his shop before he decided to bone me on the deal. He put over $6500 inthe the grill and sold it for $4000 to a friend. I'd have packaged it neatly up his *** if I had that invested and he didn't buy it. He gave me a check for the initial design then asked for the lifters. when I gave him a non-dimensioned set of prints for 'em he wanted me to finish but started argueing over design and detail hrs. and refused to pay so I told him to pound sand....

Yea I'm keeping all the livestock... any recommendations on how to keep it alive on the trip if its going to be that hot. I was thinking styro boxes in the back of a truck with a cap on it that are triple bagged with oxygen in extra large bags (space is not an issue) with all my live rock in a 55 gallon trashcan filled with my tank water. I might need something to keep them even cooler... what do you think, I'm driving strait threw and hopefully leaving here in the am so it will be dark when i get to the southern states hence a lil cooler.
Ahh gotcha, Smart on your part. He just got pics no dims on them. Left it too him to build. Huh go figure he built it and could figure out the rest without you. Geez Id think he would have had the common courtesy to pay you for the rest in the end after sinking that kind of cash in it. then take a loss in the end what a boob. Oh well his loss or i should say his buddies loss. Never the less it was a nice "Q".
If I was you Id get some portable battery operated aerators and put them in your live stock bags. Being too cold is better than too hot so I might consider using a can inside a can or a smaller can with your stock in it inside a larger can where you can put ice around the other can if the need arises. Maybe get some styrofoam coolers and fill them with stock and get a big cooler to put those coolers in. How many days do you expect them to sit is the real question. More than 3 days is gonna tax anything. The battery op. aerators are cheap and they will run for days on a couple "D" batteries. As far as getting here when its dark and being cooler, Dont hold your breath. Its like a steam bath day or night during the rainy season. Best you can hope for during the night hours is 80-85. I run a 400w MH on my 90 gal frag tank and its all I can do to keep it at 79 F during the day thats my AC going 24-7 set on 78 and cabinet doors open and its 18 inches off the water line. I add approx. 5 gal every 2 days top off just from evap. Its nuts. Thats one thing you will have to deal with down here is heat.
I like to use the analogy its just the opposite as it is in the north. Our summers most people stay indoors where as up there your outdoors. Winter is awesome here best time to do your outdoor activities. Your more prone to get sick here in the summer also. Im sick now been for the last 3 days. Comes every year about the start of rainy season from the humidity and going from AC to the outdoors. Lung infections are common. Dont wanna scare ya off but it is a fact. Nothing worse than being sick when its 90 outside. Oh yea if you havent done so allready start looking for a LFS near where you plan to move. I had the hardest time finding things here. I still do alot online as far as dry good because the local shops dont carry alot and what they do carry is cheap and not sufficent for reefers. I have to drive 20 miles just to get anything and even then they might not have what I need so Im runnning all over the county looking for something simple. I buy in bulk now lesson learned. Get all your supplies ahead of your move so you have time to shop around that way you wont be scrammbling for something like medications if your move caused one of your fish to get sick.
Other than that you should be good to go.

my family has lived there for 4 years now so I know all about the weather from visiting. winter is great, I will have everything in styros and oxygen packed. I'm thinking a total trip time of about 20 hours with about 3 to 5 hours extra time during the time the first one is packed to the time it starts acclimating. So about 26 hours max they will be in bags, possibly slightly longer than that. It's going to be a nightmare considering I have mostly colonies of SPS and don't want to lose anything. Fish isn't really a problem, i only have about 6 smaller fish. I found a LFS but its a small hike, but worth it... there are two others closer but prices and quality suck so I'll pass on that. I should be in good shape, I'm coming down in two weeks to set up the tank, i already have the stand built, and I'm going to do all the plumbing and setup then and fill it to the point of the overflow, add a sandbed, and then just run a powerhead inside to circulate the water and have no lights on it till i get back in August. So thatway I don't lose a lot to evap.
Then when i arrive in august I will just top off and with the large amount of livestock I'm bringing along with the rock should push enough water into the sump to start the main pump and run the system. While everything is aclimating I plan to hang my lights which are 3 aquamedic 250 watt HQI's. I'll need a 4th later down the road but no big rush now. I'll also be setting up my calcium reactor and putting in my tunzes during this acclimating time. So I should be in good shape with all this but hey I'm open to suggestions.
My final plan is to "survive" the rest of this summer keeping the tank cool with fans so I can save during the winter for a Chiller for this tank so I no longer have a heat issue, I'll also be adding 2 vho's for actinic and another 250 watt pendant over the course of this time. But for now its all about timing.

Sounds good, and you were looking for advice? lol. I gotta get some Tunze Streams, man those are the bomb. Im planning dual 400 W integrated fan cooled lights from Sun Systems with VHO backups for my 290. I got one now and the other is on its way.

Most people dont have that luxury to have the other tank up and running. Be funny to bring a bag of sand on a plane, Tell them its to seed your new tank lol. Or no tell them your just returning it back to the beach from OH. You forgot it when you left last time lol... Probably haul you off and strip search you on general principles.

haha... i wish i was flying, i have to drive to tennesse to pick up my new tank at glasscages warehouse. Its saving me a bundle over having it shipped thou. plus i got to bring all my other crap... moving sucks, thats why I got a new tank so it would make it more of an incentive to move lol.
Hey you could pick up (2) 300's and drop me one off here on your way thru that would be great. lol...

Lol. That could get ugly.
Funny....but ugly. We get alot of stories coming out of the Airlines since thats are no. 1 customer. Some of the stuff that gets confiscated is crazy. I hear it all from smuggled animals out of S. America. Drugs, Cigarettes, booze, Copy cat designer wear, watches. You name it. Its not hardly possible to use air travel to traffic these things anymore but people still try. Just recently busted this guy dressed as an obese man in sweat pants trying to smuggle fish in from S. America. He had bags of water fastened to his body with this elaborate harness he fashioned. Then he covered himself with layers of clothing. Looked like your typical "All you can eat buffet" regular. Customs got wise when it was 90 + degrees and he was dressed like it was winter out. Plus he sloshed when he walked lol... Big market for exotics here in FL.

Agreed. The older I get the more things I wish I had took my time on. Thats the case on most things I suppose. My first SW tank was a nightmare.
My new tank will be all lessons applied over the years. Too many late nights bailing water. Should be awesome. If I added up all my time and money spent over the years and put that into a prospective single tank project right from the start I probably would had a kick @ss 500 gal. reef and a furniture quality stand by now. I jumped the gun so many times I cant count. Just bites me everytime I think about it. Alittle more patience, alittle more study Id have been so much better off.
Now taking all things into perspective, Im gonna move like an old man on this one. When Im done I should have no regrets.
All that aside the LFS led me astray alot too. But I should have been wiser and done my homework first. Thats like buying a car cuz the saleman said its a good deal. Just a recipe for failure.
When in doubt run it thru RC. Thank god for the net. I probably would have bailed out of this hobby by now if I hadnt found a sight like this and gotten some good info online.

Agreed 100%. I'll be building 2 tiered display to house mu big tank plus 2 nano's. All will use a central sump and the fuge will be fed by and emptied into the sump also. All controls and electrical will be neat , clean and GFCI. All plumbung will be made with unions and valves for simple maint or reconfig. Everyhting will be built like a brick chithouse and all wood will be 100% waterproof inside and out. I'm not interested in a show piece or ultra-tech. But I;'ve learned over the yers that you can never be smart enough or have enough room for operations to go smoothly.
I have a picture in my head (ya scary as my head is at times) and just need to put some time and effory into it. BTW, the next stand will be a welded steel assembly covered by cabinet quality veneer and custom doors (I do alot of work for a HUGE cabinet Mfg.) The hood and lighting will be fullt articulated to give complete access to the tank free for burns or dangerous dunkings.
Now all I need is some $$$$. LOLOLOL

If you get a chance check out Sidewinder770 post on 375 build up in large tank forum. I copied his design on his steel stand. I changed it up here and there to meet my needs and his was 375 gallon verse my 290 gallon so dims changed here and there. Im still not 100% on his skins and how he attatched it all cuz hes being illusive on those details but for the most part I got it figured.
Thats the cleanest layout Ive seen on RC. His tank room is sweet. Guy must be a drug dealer to afford all the good stuff hes got but in time mine will be as nice.

I trolled the sights for ideas on stands til I found that one. Hes got a seperate tank room in his garage thats got its own mini AC unit feeding into it. Nice idea but I dont think Ill be living in the same house long enough to justify going that far.
However his plumbing and everything he put in is to be an example of what to strive for. Just as clean and cut and dried as you could want. Unions, ball valves all tucked in and plumbed perfectly.
