A little advise.

For what it's worth, BBT I think that you are doing a great job. Especially for such a young aquarist. You are researching, qt, asking all the right questions, and It is obvious that you really care about the livestock. I just want to say that it is refreshing and I think that you will do well in this hobby. You also take advice very well. Keep up the good work!

+1

I wouldn't have recommended the damsel first but I agree. You could give it a try.

I agree 100% and I would also add this is a very good thread. Folks exchanging ideas, no snide remarks, just helping a fellow member.

Thanks! That means a lot!

Such a great thread and I spell advice wrong in the title.....

A tiny update: tried feeding, since he didn't eat the last two days. Didnt have to turn my power filter off since he was eating from the water column! Super excited! He went back to his corner, but swims a bit when I go near.

That's great. Try feeding very small amounts frequently. Scoop out the food that doesn't get eaten. Glad he started nibbling though!

I agree with Martini5788 you are doing a wonderful job BBT

And I'm not going to be the ONLY A_HOLE that says get rid of "little buddy" Keep your friend.

Sounds like he is slowly getting a bit more adventurous.

Thats what I think too...
Martini, I will try feeding three times tomorrow, we will see how it goes...

:)
Still not sure if I will keep him. Almost everyone says yellowtails are one of the calmest damsels, and he has been very shy during qt...
We shall see... Came home from a basketball tournament just now, didn't want to wake him up to feed.

Thanks Everyone!!!

Little update:
Came home this morning after basketball, and saw him swimming all around!!Amazing!!

So happy.

"little buddy" looks to be comfortable with me, and has even started to beg for food when I am around.
Did a water change today because ammonia badge was green.

You can also add prime as well to bind the toxic ammonia but water change is good. Going great!

I was going to do that, but then realized I had to dose prime every 24 hours to keep the ammonia bound. Water changes are just easier and keep "little buddy" less stressed, and me less stressed.

Just doing water change means the ammo is building and building until you change the water. And that still doesn't brig it to zero. If you have .5 ammo and do a 50% change, you are still at .25. Too high, and it starts climbing right away. If you add a few drops if prime as the instructions on the bottle, it's like your fish are wearing gas masks until the bacteria catch up. And you know they aren't having their gills painfully burned for the next 24 hours or so.

There are kits that will tell you accurately if the ammonia in the water is harmful, or primed. But for me it's just an extra measure. A security blanket while I fix whatever disaster I created which caused Ammonia to raise in the first place.

Are you doing something weird to the prime when you dose it? I just pour a capful in the sump and it's fine, but you say it stresses your fish?

No no, I just pour in a tiny bit, its just with water changes I know that I am doing something... If i start dosing prime every day how much should I change the water?

I say stick with a good wc schedule, adding the Prime will help it stay clean longer by binding up the poop&pee so nobody has to breathe it rotting in the tank. Until the next change. You can def do both. Specially if you haven't got rodi water, Prime will address the metals in it.

Thats what I thought... I thought there would be no problems?? I was thinking a vroliks wrasse as well in my tank? Any problems?

The damsel still hasn't come off the bottom. I am not sure if he is sick or not..

Jay R, did you QT your damsels? If so did your yellowtail move around a lot?

Hi BBT.. No I don't usually QT my fish, but only because I single source ( I do if purchased from a different source) and I know my LFS guy very well. I know my fish have already been through a strict QT prior to purchase. But i'd always suggest a QT phase if unsure.

The only thing I QT is Rock and Corals.

If your fish is still shy and your params are OK then i'd suggest again that this is due to nothing more than fear of venturing out into the expanse. Damsels don't usually stray far from the reef as that's where they'll feel safer.
