A Reef in the Sky

Phenomenal build and terrific pictures!

What setting do you have your 6105's on? I notice you have one on the side of the tank. Both of my 6105's are on the back of my 120, pointing towards the front middle of the tank, on pulse mode from 30% to 100% on a interval of 6 seconds. I'm curious to hear what setting you have yours on.

Hi tntneon,
I don't use white balance on the camera but adjust it on the computer. I shoot all pics in RAW as it allows me to adjust the WB.

Please see the link above provided by Ricardo for the answer

Thank you Ricardo!

Yes, very lucky. Shipments will increase in frequency soon as summer hits the southern hemisphere :)

PM sent. Please note, I don't think they ship overseas, but not sure

Hi there,

Yes... I monitored parameters for a long time (2months) before connecting the automatic dosing unit. During that time I realized the Alk reduced more per day than Ca. Therefore I dose the amounts as mentioned above.
I was under the impression that 1:1 dosing was also required until I did some research and asked the water chemistry forums. There is no problem.

Here is the link Dosage of Alk & Ca not the same?

Hi Eric,

At the moment, the lights are approx 6" above the water level.

Bulbs: Front to Back
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Blue Special
KZ Coral Light Fiji Purple
KZ Coral Light Super Blue
KZ Coral Light Fiji Purple
ATI Blue Plus
KZ Coral Light New Generation
ATI Blue Plus

Sunrise/Sunset bulbs are the KZ Coral Light Fiji Purple & ATI Blue Plus

Yes I have been using a chiller. It keeps the tank temp between 27-27.5C. It is starting to cool down now so I'll have to look at getting some heaters.

Hmmmmmmmmm....

If only!!! :spin3:

Hi Andrew,

I am awared that you are using ATI with profilux. When you have your lights on, what percentage are you running? I find running at 100% is too bright for my tank.

btw, your tank looks magnificient!

Every time I have a bad day, I come and read this journal. Even just the pictures keep me happy :)

How're all the new additions settling in?

$2100USD!!! :crazy1:
Agreed!!

Yikes... $2100 is just a bit out of my budget :D

Love the growth pics though... I've got a staghorn acro that seems to be growing at a very similar pace.
Thanks Chad. Yeah, the Gem Tang is way too expensive.

The ATI Blue + and Blue Special, how different are they in color when you view them in your tank?
Very different. The B+ bulbs are very blue compared to the Blue Special. I find that having no more than x4 B+ bulbs is enough for the x8 bulb unit. Especially with the blue background. That being said, I use x1 KZ coral light Super Blue and like the spectrum it gives. I plan on changing my other ATI Blue + bulbs over time.

Congratulations for the great work!
I have been watching your try since the beginning and i can tell you that i am quite impressed.
This is the spirit my friend! You have made one of the best (especially regarding the colors) tanks and the aqua scape looks quite natural! Almost like a real reef!

Greetings from Greece.
Thank you Teo... I am a big fan of your work and your past TOTM!!

Please bear with me as I need to look up the setting on the Profilux. I will get back to you. I'll post a screen shot for you!

Hey..............I know that fish!
If only we took it with us!! That shop had some amazing fish!

tank is looking amazing! very well maintained and perfect! great job!
Thank you Sir!! I admire your work too!

Hello,

Can you tell me where you purchased the winch? Thank you

I do not speak English, sorry, but your project interests me greatly
Hi Chris... I have sent you a PM

Andrew, Your Achilles is looking great! Good Job. Do you know if he came from local waters?
Hi Jonathan. Cheers... so far so good. Not 100% sure but I would say so. Definitely some where here in South East Asia.

Hi Fred and thanks. Yes, you are correct. I have always run mine less than 100% (except for burning in). Channel 1 (B+ & Fiji Purple bulbs) are at 85% and the Channel 2 bulbs are 90%. I am actually hoping to change the combo later this week as I want the swap the bulbs in Channel 1 around and also remove the other Fiji purple and replace it will an old ATI blue special.

Every time I have a bad day, I come and read this journal. Even just the pictures keep me happy :)

How're all the new additions settling in?

Thanks Nork.... very kind of you.

The Lyretails and Achilles are going well. The male has complete developed and looks great!! He has a lot of fun with the ladies :smokin: TheAchilles has learnt to eat all food I give so I'm pleased about that. He also eat nori from me fingers, the other tangs and foxface don't do that.

Some exciting additions were picked up the other day. More on them shortly.... plus, it must be time for another video! :D

Andrew, Thanks for you reply! Your channel 1 is running 6 bulbs and channel 2 running 2 bulbs? My setup has Channel 1 (2 ATI blue bulbs) running at 100% and Channel 2 (8 bulbs) running at max 75%. Running at 100% is too bright for my LPS.

Is it possible to meet up during my next visit to Hong Kong? We can meet up at Pro-Coral and would like to take a look at your tank personally.

Very nice Arcilles! I had 4 of them but no luck to get them to eat.

This is an older pic I found. The only things that have changed are the pump % limits.
Hope that helps

Yes, yes :bounce3:
Ok... I just put together a little something to wet the appetite

Hey....your holding out on me......what new additions?

You must also be close to a thread split too!
More surprises at the fish street so had to get one or two or more things :)
Nope, no split threads since the update last year!

Hi Fred,

Channel 1 has x2 bulbs
Channel 2 has the remaining x6 bulbs
Is your PM dimmable? If not the only other option might be to raise the light unit.

Sure, let me know when your in town and I'll see if I'm free.

Please do release a new video. I like Sonny's, Denadai's, RodrigoBG's and your tanks. So my new tank is being modelled sort of in a similar fashion. You guys are very inspiring because of your beautiful setups.

Andrew, Would you like my 7D? I am so not worthy :lmao: I'm certain it will get way better use with you. I'm in total agreement with tbone

Hi Andrew,

We have the same configuration except I am running a 10-bulb fixture. Yes, my PM is dimmable.

Channel 1 x2 bulbs: have 12 setpoints, mainly turns on at 1200, reaches 100% at 1530, then dims slowly and turns off at 0130.
Channel 2 x8 bulbs: also have 12 setpoints, turns on 10% at 1430, reaches max 75% at 1630 and stays for 1800 for 1.5 hours, then dims down to turn off at 2330.

Please comment on my settings.

Also, below is my tank confirguration:

DT (3 sided pennisula): 1400x650x600 with net water volume (including sump) approx 500L
Skimmer: Vertex Royal Exclusiv Alpha Cone 250
Using the same Zeovit reactor as you with 1.5L zeolites. Changing 90% zeolites every 6-8 weeks.
PM carbon reactor with 129g of carbon interchanges every 4 weeks
Mechanical filtration: Bubble megas filter socks rinse daily.
Wave configuration: 2 nano wavebox + 1 MP40
Dosing: GHL dosing pump with 11 channels (3+4+4)
RO/DI: Vertex 200GPD
Water Change: RBS salt, 5% weekly water change or sometimes 10L every other day.

Water Parameters:

Salinity: 1.026
Temp: 25.3 - 26.2 (winter time)
NO3: approx. 0.1ppm (Hanna)
PO4: 0.16 (Hanna) - having some issue with PO4, I restarted the entire tank in June due to AEFW. Using total dead rocks (cooked) and reseed the rock with only BAK. PO4 was initially at 0.69 and coming down slowly.
NO2: undetectable
Ca: 450ppm
KH: 7.2
Mg: 1395ppm
K: approx. 380-400ppm

I will share some of my tank shots with you later.

Thank you!

Hi Andrew,

This is my tank before the AEFW hit. Photos taken around May 2010. The current tank is much cleaner to provide more space for the fishes.

Okay, sold!! Cheers Jonathan. I find that I shoot most shots in Manual mode. It is a lot of trial and error but it seems to get the best results.

Wow! Gorgeous tank!!
Thanks

Fred

Hi Fred and thanks for the info. Your tank looks great and well done on getting it up and running after the AEFW's.

I use 2 channels to control my PM
Channel 1 controls 2 bulbs (ATI B+ and KZ Fiji Purple)
Channel 2 controls 6 bulbs (other bulbs)

I find that lighting is personal and depends what you are after. Your settings look fine to me and are similar except for the time of day it starts.

Unlike those of us that have tanks in the basement of their house where lighting periods can start at anytime of the day my tank is located in a room with windows where natural light definitely has an influence. I generally follow the daylight hours that are outside with a few exceptions.

Here is a great link that I use to develop an understanding of just how much daylight occurs in the areas of coral reefs Daylight hours on coral reefs. There is a lot of day light!!

Regarding your Zeolites exchange, have you tried changing at the 5-6week mark? I usually change them at the 4-5week mark as the colour start to fade a little.
Also, 129grams of carbon seems low. I use 400-450 grams every 4 weeks

Hope that helps
