A Reef in the Sky

Wow, that is really a fairy-tale specimen of the species A. desalwii! You've brought out all its best points. Congrats! Do you think I'm jealous? :spin2:
I hope not. I will need your ID advice soon for some corals.

Yo Andrew put the controller down and pick up your camera!

Any new stocking plans in the future? I think that Gem tank would look very sexy in your tank.

Cheers,

Clint
Hey Clint, okay will do... but it's difficult.
No new stocking plans... I think there are enough fish at the moment. A Gem tang would certainly be great but I think 3 tangs are enough. Also, I'm scared that the Gem tang would not settle in easily... a big gamble!

I have no references regarding this but only personal experience. I would monitor the alk and cal every 3 days/twice a week till things are back to normal then continue once a week, a lot can change in a week with the consumption then you will be back to square one with things browning/burning etc.
Thanks Ryan, I am getting on top of it. I am not dosing any ALK at the moment as it appears stable.
My main goal is to clean the substrate and sump since the gobies have stirred up soooo much dust. It's amazing how much muck there is.
I change the filter sock twice a day and also have some filter pads in the sump which are also changed daily.

It was good teaming up last night. Had some fun. Was amazed that you're already at 50.. That explains your crazy 55 kill streak. You are the first 50 that i have seen in that game. Your connection looked pretty good when i was spectating you. Had i not known from reading this thread that you're in HK, i wouldn't have known at all.
For sure, the signal appeared okay, unlike the games since though :(
But we will play some more games for sure.

This is absolutely stunning! I love the sliding platforms and making a place for the laptop, awesome planning!!
Cheers Scott, the planning certainly helped

your tank set up is freaking clean..

one of my favorite thread.
Thank you and thanks for following along

I'm going keep watching this one
Welcome

New Salt

I had these delivered today and it's not what I expected. I haven't opened them yet. Is this the new packaging from Korallen Zucht?

I hope so, I hate having to move the sand from the boxes to old buckets. Anyone in the US get this packaging yet?

Salt Update

I contacted my vendor (official Hong Kong importer for KZ products) and explained my concern. He stated that he put in a request for KZ to pack RBS in containers and not boxes due to humidity issues here in Hong Kong. This salt also arrived from the last shipment. The owner of the shop also said that he will obtain a letter from Thomas (KZ owner) and show me.

With all that, I will of course check parameters before using however I'm glad that I will now have some extra containers. :)

The tank appears to be improving after my recent troubles. I added some more sand the other day as it was thin in areas. Also, I'm using filter socks again (changed daily) as well as some filter pad in the sump which is changed daily too.

Tank parameters are all fine but I'm trying to reduce the No3 which is at approx 4. Started ALK again at 20ml a day.

I've reverted back to my old bulb combo again as I preferred the spectrum.

I know I haven't added many pics recently so here is a little sneak peak... as the video is on hold until colours improve.

the gobies could be causing all the issues, i found with substrate either clean portions of it regularly (weekly) or not at all, when it hasnt been cleaned/vacummed for a while then gets stirred up it can cause some issues. For this reason i went BB with my new tank, although it does not look as nice.

good luck with getting back up to speed.

Until colors improve...........ok..............I wish my colors sucked that bad ;)

LOL, I want to say the same when I see the picture.

I am specially impressed by your success rate with Maricultured Acros, most of them turns into better color than the original. Mission impossible for me. Great reef keeping & keep it up.

v1..rotate, first of all, great tank. u make me feel very inspired to start a new tank all over again. i find your planning to be very detailed and precise. i guess that must have come from your training as a pilot. i am here from singapore and i have a fellow reefer friend who also seem to be able to get the best stuff because he has a relative who is a pilot as well. i guess trips to the states allows easy access to all the cool stuff. :)

i have followed this thread from the 1st page and i like many ideas you put into this. i am actually very interested to see the roll-out platform in action for your husbandry. did you showcase this in an earlier post? i am sorry if i might have missed it. otherwise, i would highly appreciate to see how you are able to roll out the sump without interfering too much with the pipe-work and wires/plugs of the pump.

Andrew, your tank continues to flourish due to your great husbandry and attention to details.. Your fish are looking really fat and happy too.. Fat growing fish + colorful growing SPS = Somebody whose got the hang of this hobby of ours. Great work Buddy!

Thanks for the kind words and following along. Yes, there is a lot of cool stuff over in the states. I especially like the free shipping :)

The rollout sump has been going well and is working a treat. I have used it twice in the last 6 months with no problems. All the pipes have unions on them so I simply disconnect them, unplug the skimmer, zeo reactor, return and chiller pumps and I am good to roll.

Thanks Jonathan. I wish though... so many obstacles.

Speaking of success in husbandry, how is your tank going? Time for an update

Hi Marc, thanks for the kind words. Will do.

As for your question, the actual artist is Joey Negro but that song was released under one of his many aliases.

Artist: Jakatta (feat Beth Hirsch)
Song title: One Fine Day

Check is out: One Fine Day

It was released back in 2002 and is one of my favourites. Other famous songs by Jakatta (Joey Negro) 'American Dream' and 'My Vision' featuring Seal. All are great tunes.

Hope that helps

It sure did Andrew, many thanks! Enjoying it now btw

Cheers,
Marc

The tank is doing really well despite obstacles here and there.. I have been really hands off over the last few weeks and the tank seems to be progressing nicely.. I just started back with some aminos lasrt night to try and darken my colors a bit. I'm watching things very closely now to see any shifts. I still have certain pieces that just won't grow regardless of where I place them, but I'm being patient. On the other hand, there are corals that are growing like wild-fire.... Go figure! LOL.

Great to hear Marc

haha... I'm trying to lighten my corals. Same here, some corals grow fast and other don't at all??

Update

No pics to provide at this time, well actually there are some but they are on my home computer and I'm in cold/wintry Toronto at the moment so can't upload them. :smurf:

A few new additions last week include x3 Clams (since they love nitrates) yum yum... and x1 orange plate coral (Fungia sp)

The biggest change is the addition of more live rock!! That's right but don't panic...

Some thoughts regarding the rock structure:
For a sometime I haven't been totally happy with the left hand side of the rock structure in front of the over flow. IMO there was too much of a vertical drop and meant I ran out of room for more coral placement.

I picked up x5 pieces of live rock and x3 rocks were used to create a tower which is located on the left side as mentioned above. There is more of a gradual slope down now. It has closed the space between the main rock structure and island a little but now houses x3 corals. It also creates more hiding spaces for the fish.

The other x2 pieces of rock have been slotted into gaps within the original rock work to give me more options for coral placement. It work out really well.

I'll post some pics when I'm back. Thanks for following along.

I agree with the addition of the LR Andrew (and always kind of hoped you would do it), I think what you're describing is the right choice in regards to the long term. The extra places for corals has gotta be of benefit, especially with that top-notch stuff you get over there in HK!

What kind of clams did you get? :)

I like (as far as what you described) the LR choice... especially if it doesn't negate your "minimalist look".

And did you say more clams?!?!?! That's what I like to hear... can't wait for some pics of the updated rock and clams!

hope all is well with you buddy. so there's where youve been hibernating at lately thats keeping you from posting updates (at least at the zeovit forum) :)

still top notch colors and everything buddy! you have to save me some of those frags for my visit! :)

best regards,
