A Reef in the Sky

I found this thread a few days ago.. I read all 49 pages... This is the aquarium everyone dreams to have one day. I love the planning that went into everything.

The old setup was awesome, the new one is incredible!! Will definitely be tagging along for progress on this one, amazing work!

V1 first I just have to say I love everything about your setup. The stand is amazing and the tank is just as impressive. Very well done and congrats on the amazing outcome with your corals.

I haven't completed reading the thread as of yet but I have made up to page 32 so I'm getting their. Its such a great read. So thx for that as well.

I was wondering a few things from back around page 9 or 10 give or take. When you setup your drains. You said "this was very important to my design. No pipes showing above and hopefully the CJ's will work nicely and quietly." this is somthing I'm wanting to achive as well. So I plan on ordering the same standpipes that you have. So I was wondering how you measured yours? Their web site says to measure from the bottom inside of the drain to the top of the teeth on the overflow. Is this what you done or did you measure a little lower so they would be hidden? I know it's been some time ago but wouldn't happen to remimber how you measured yours?

One other question, for know :) how is the metal stand? I just got done framing mine out of wood just before I ran across your thread and was wondering if it is worth scraping the wood frame and build a metal one. the tank btw is a 48x24x24

Once again great thread and love the setup. Thx for your time as well.

Wow I just got done reading all the pages. Wow best reading I've done at work in a long time. V1 have to say I love the new stand. Looks really nice. The tank is looking great as well LOVE IT. Its like you read my mind with you new layout
On the rock work. Thats really close to how I was planning mine.

sorry about the coral and fish that didn't make it. Hate to see that.
Sushi for lunch I guess :)

Tank looks great though. Congrats

Andrew's won Thread of the Month.

I believe Noypi is referring to the much coveted "Tank of the Month" award, which I believe still hasn't been snagged by Andrew.

Andrew,
I was just looking at your sump again and was wondering what your thoughts are on a refugium and/or growing macro algae.

I am thinking my fuge may be a nutrient producer

That big stag on the left looks like you're on your way to paying homage to Krzysztof Tryc's when he won his ZEOvit DTOTQ ;)
Wow thanks Ben!!! I can only dream of having a tank like his!!

again speacheless V1 ... , absolutly amazing !!!

And how do you keep your glass ( even the back panels ) so clean ???

love the open aquascape , but doesn't the reduced amount of LR in your DT cause any troubbles ?
It doesn't seems like that anyway :D
I ask you this question because i'm gonna set up a bigger tank too (154 G) , and want to have that open look too , do you have additional LR in your sump?

greetingzz tntneon :)
Thank you very much. I usually clean the tank glass every few days. Only takes a few minutes. I clean the back more thoroughly during water changes.

I don't notice any side effects of having reduced live rock. I dose Zeo BAK x2 week at x5 drops. There is no live rock in the sump at all.

Good luck with the new project.

Thank you for the kind words and glad you enjoyed the read!

The overflow is was very important to me. I didn't want any noise from it as the water flowed through the teeth and down into the drain area. I had read many reports of others who had 'water trickle noise'. It was tricky for me to measure actually as I had the pipes made in the US while the tank was being made here. I measured them by doing some drawings and consulting with the guy who made them from his recommendation.

The old stand was not as practical as I thought it would be be. Plus I had a big rust problem. I designed a new stand (current one). It is made of metal (frame) but completely covered by wood.

I know very little about the topic. I'm happy with my sump as it seems to work well with the Zeovit method.

Hello Andrew

Every time I see an update of your tank I get exited and I end up really sad!How is it possible to keep everything so top notch?????I think i ll never reach your standards!

Two questions for you

Is it still a reef in the SKY?

Have you ever had any second thought considering the width of the tank? For sure with the glass thickness you used you could stretch to 30 inches and add more to the open feel of the tank!

Hi Crazy Beaver... thank you for your kind words. Everybody has their own standards. As long as everyone is happy and proud of their own tank, that's the most important thing.

To answer your questions... yes. I actually live on a higher floor now. The 65th to be exact!

Yes... if I were to get a new tank I would go for 30" but would need to reduce the height to 20". Not sure on the length. I would also have an external overflow so flow inside the tank would be better.

Wow... thank you! Good luck with the project! There is lots to learn off this website!

Your tank is amazing! I love your scape it's so open but allows the focal points to all be on the amazing SPS you have. I have to say I'm extremely jealous of your LFS!

Keep up the amazing work!
