A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

amazing Dan! those rocks are going to look awesome when covered with coraline!!!!

Thanks Steve!

There is still plenty of room for more corals and yes, lots of coraline! I am waiting to install the TIR lenses for the Radion's and have a feeling that things will be taking off once they are on.

I have been checking your thread daily and am glad that you are enthusiastically back at it!

Dan,

I just got a foxface too and I see yours looks brown at the top of their backs. Does it stay all the time or does it go away? When mine hides he get darker all over, almost black and white, but when he comes out to eat his colors return and looks like yours. From the lack of experience on my part how do you know if a foxface is doing well? Mine swims around fine and eats when fed but I have no clue as to his condition. I am more stressed not knowing if he is doing well or not. I have pictures and video on my thread "First Timer" of him. I will post more this afternoon.

Sonny n Colleen:

I don't have a great deal of experience with Foxfaces. I had one in my old 150 gallon for about 6-9 months and it did not fare to well.

The 2 that I have in QT appear to be very shy. When I go to the tank to feed or clean the glass, they cower in one of the corners. They do get darker all over and they extend their dorsal fins.

When I watch the tank from a distance, the foxfaces are swimming and appear to be eating. I have only had them for 6 days now. I have to see how they do in QT over the next few weeks.

Thanks! That is exactly what this guy is doing. He sure looks mean when he gets dark.

What are you feeding your foxfaces?

I mix it up. Everyday they get Mysis & Brine Shrimp soaked in garlic or selcon. I also feed a little Rod's Reef, Dainichi, Cyclop-eeze or some flake food a 2nd or 3rd time each day.

I acclamated a magnificient in my qt for 4 weeks, and he only stressed out for the first day when he was moved in the big tank. Nobody messes with him and I have some much bigger fish in a heavy bioload. Mine eats pellets, frozen brine and mysis and algae sheets once a day.

I have not been noticing much in the way of stress when adding new fish anymore. I have been generally adding the fish at night under the dark blue lights or early in the morning. There is some hiding and shyness perhaps during the first day - but if properly acclimated, no big issues.

Despite having a mixed reef tank, Im more of a fish guy than a coral guy, so your population and selection of fish is just what I love! I dig all the tangs, but wheres the love for some high end wrasses! LOL! Keep up the great build Dan!

Dan, it's been a while since commenting! Your build is looking great... I have actually been in Scottsdale over the last few weeks and should have contacted you to see it in person. I should be back out there in the next three weeks and maybe we can arrange a quick tour!

I looked at the Protein Skimmers the same way I looked at the lights. I spent a lot of time reading the forums on the Large Reef Tank builds, sent a lot of emails out and asked a lot of questions.

There were several companies whose products were strongly considered:

Reef Dynamics (formerly Euro-Reef)
Bubble King
ATB
Reef Octopus

In the end one company seemed to stand out and that is what I decided to go with. Deltec's 3070 External.

The skimmer is a monster and I am anxious to see it in action.

How much you paid for this Monster. Where you ordered it?

I rather not say, but retail prices are listed on various websites.

It is an amazing skimmer!

My LFS has a great relationship with the distributors. If you are considering purchasing one, send me a PM and I will be happy to put you in contact with them.

Beautiful! Both the aquarium and the technical parts!

Regarding the skimmer, have you thought about bringing air from the outside of your house? Long ago I was reading a presentation of a large tank located in Paris, a 4200 liters, and the owner was explaining that all of his skimmers had the air intake connected to the outside of the house.

The article is in French but you can enjoy the pictures and videos here

He was taking as a reference an article from 2002 from the Advanced Aquarist:

Thank you Geraud.

Great article in Advanced Aquarist. I need to get the French article translated.

The weather has gotten a lot nicer so I have been leaving the window adjacent to the skimmer, open in the fish room. I had the alarm company out to wire the screens and fish room door. I think running a fresh air line to the skimmer might be a good option during our hot summer months!

I appreciate you thinking about my system and the oxygen issue.

Would that work in accordance with your ozone?

Thanks Commandoe!

I do love Wrasses. I have not seen many for sale recently that made me feel like "I have to own that!" or "That would look great in my tank!"

Now that the summer is coming to an end and the heat is dying down, I am expecting the LFS's to start increasing their inventories. I get inventory lists from many of their suppliers too. So we will see...
