A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Yeah +whatever on that Kalk stirrer, I've been eyeing the K1 which is "good for 400 gallons of tank" but might go to the K2 but that thing looks ginormous!

come on dan....you cant post pictures of boxes marked "live tropical fish" and not tell us whats in them!!!! Anticipation is killing us!!!!

Steve.

Sorry for keeping you and everyone in suspense. I have been running around with my wife and kids all weekend. I will try to shoot some pics tomorrow.

Outside of the Kalk Stirrer, I mostly picked up some Anthias, a couple Fox Faces, some small (too small) - Blue Caribbean Tangs, a carpet anemone...again, pics tomorrow!

Regards,

Dan

33 pages and 2 days later finally able to finish reading the entire thread. This is an awesome tank. My dream tank is the 300DD with a QT under the stand next to the refugium. I am also a Tang lover and want to keep a sohal, Achilles and PBT all together but thought I'd have trouble. Your tank make me think it is possible. Btw the in tank QT, where did you see them because I want to add another tang to my 90 but purple is seriously aggressive. Thought of making one myself

Sorry it took me so long to respond. Been a longggg weekend!

Thank you for the compliments! I have not had any issues with my tangs together. At the present time I have 2 purples, 2 powder blues, 3 blond naso's, 2 sailfins, 2 blue hippo, 2 yellow, 2 yellow eye kole, 2 lopezi, 2 vlamingii, 2 tomini, 1 convict tang... I have 2 clown tangs, 2 convict and 2 small Caribbean blue tangs in a separate QT. I did have one Powder Brown that was picked on my a powder blue that didn't make it. I attribute that to the way it was introduced to the tank itself. I have also lost one clown tang to a mystery death and another to jumping over the tank. I also lost a convict tang that was too timid or shy to eat...

The small QT for in the tank is nothing special, I am not sure where I bought it. I believe it may be a breeding tank. I will try to shoot some pics of it for you.

Very cool tank indeed. Makes my 150G look tiny, and my planned 300G DD not quite as big as I had hoped. No envy though, just praise and gratitude for sharing.

I'm hoping you could go into more detail about the auto feeder through the fridge. I built something simple yet effective myself using a 5 gallon jug that had frozen food kept in suspension in the fridge using a small koralia pump. I had a maxi-jet on a timer, throttled down with a ball valve at the end, that fed the tank from the fridge 3-4 times a day. When the power was on, the maxi pumped the food up and in. When the power shut off, the food in the tubing either fell into the tank or back into the 5 gallon in the fridge.

Works great for short periods of time, but if I'm away too long then the water in the 5 gallon depletes or, if I replenish the water using some sort of auto top-off, the food spoils.

Your set-up looks to have both of these issues covered. One thing I am curious about is why, if you have water running through the PVC constantly, does the water not ride up the tubing through the dosers and into your food containers?

Andrew

Thank you Andrew. My feeding system was working great but I need to replace my dosing pump. I am having issues with the programming on the unit. I should have a replacement unit on Thursday.

I think the reason why I don't have water going back up through the doser tubing is because of the flow of the water in the PVC. I am going at a real slow speed. More than a trickle but less than 1/4 full.

Because of how often I am dosing, I don't need to worry about food going bad as it is all in the refrigerator.

Awesome Kalk Stirrer. Looks huge, is that the K2?
I really like the design with the motor and the gravity return.

Thanks jjk_reef00!!!

Yes, it is the K2. It is working great and I like how it is always stirring. The motor seems to be very similar to the self cleaning mechanism of my Deltec Protein Skimmer.

I still need to figure out a better way to have my float shut it off in case my water level goes too high for some reason. I am wondering if I can't connect the 3/8 gravity return line to 1/4" tubing on my ATO.

Nice kalk stirrer, but let's see what's swimming in those other boxes!

Big boxes but full of lots of little things....

My camera wasn't working great so these pics look like... Ended up purchasing a couple of Fox Faces, 2 blue Caribbean Tangs (small), a carpet anemone hiding in my display, 5 Disbar Anthias and 5 Lyretail Anthias...

A few pics are attached...

How is the Kalk stirrer working for you? Are you using a pH monitor with it? Oh yeah, whats in those boxes?

The Kalk Stirrer is working great! I am using a PH monitor on my ReefKeeper and my PH is finally over 8.0!!!:celeb1:

sfsuphysics:

I am real happy with the K2.

Regardless, you can't go wrong with Justin and Avast Marine. When I had a problem with the self cleaning head on my protein skimmer, before I sent it back for repairs, they sent me a new one.

When I called Justin with about my PH problem, he assured me that he would get the K2 in the mail that afternoon!

Dan,

I just got a foxface too and I see yours looks brown at the top of their backs. Does it stay all the time or does it go away? When mine hides he get darker all over, almost black and white, but when he comes out to eat his colors return and looks like yours. From the lack of experience on my part how do you know if a foxface is doing well? Mine swims around fine and eats when fed but I have no clue as to his condition. I am more stressed not knowing if he is doing well or not. I have pictures and video on my thread "First Timer" of him. I will post more this afternoon.
