A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

wicked setup cant wait to see it finished

I am excited too!

It will be a while before it is finished. I have been working hard to get things in a position to be stabilized while I am gone. It will sit for roughly a month while we are on vacation. I have someone house/fish sitting to monitor everything on my new system, feed my fish and empty my skimmer cups.

My LFS will be coming by weekly to check on everything too. I am hoping to start stocking at the end of July!

I can not wait to see this tank complete and up and running.. I would love to have something like this. Im definitely jealous.

Thank you Styk.

It has been a dream and in the planning for a long time. While things have been moving quickly, it has certainly been a long process. Don't be jealous. What's the saying "size doesn't matter" "it's the quality not the quantity!" Some of my favorite tanks are small nano systems.

I am glad that you like my build!

I love the progress. Did I miss on how you plan on hanging lights?
I think the over all quality of A.G.E. tanks is top notch.

Thanks David!

The lighting is getting to be a point of frustration! I have had the lights for several weeks now, but we have been waiting on Ecotech for their hanging kits and rail kits.

I believe that they have had our order for a month now. Apparently we are not alone. They either have a lot of orders to fill or began sales before the kits were manufactured. I was hoping to have the lights installed before leaving on vacation. I am starting to think their new lenses will come out first. :strange:

The weekend is not over Dave.

I still have 90 minutes! Waiting for all of the pics to upload to photo bucket!!!

Definitely been a long weekend in the fish room. I will sleep well tonight!

The Big Update! Picture intensive!!!

The Big Update! Picture intensive!!!

All right guys (and gals)...

I have spent the last week working in the Fish Room. Finally, everything (well almost everything) is plumbed and working smoothly. I still have a lot to do electronically, but for the most part, the plumbing is done and everything is filled with water.

I am going to let the pics do most of the talking. The first picture is of the quarantine tanks and live rock tank. The top two 75 gallon tanks flow into the rock tank but are easily separated by a turn of ball valves. The canister filter that will be used when these two tanks are used as quarantine tanks is currently running helping clean up any debris. The pics were taken this evening. The blue background on the tanks is still drying as noted on the middle tank.

My Deltec 3070 External Skimmer is up and running and sitting on its new stand. As my son will say, "it is beast!" The skimmer works like nothing I have seen before. I can't wait to get the self cleaning head! In just a few hours, the cup was filled with gook. I still have some work to do on the drainage system that I installed, so I am carefully monitoring the skimmer to make sure I don't have any overspills.

One of my 200 gallon water tanks is plumbed although I still have a few changes to make to it. I am not happy with my plumbing job on the top return line... I am going to switch it out with flex pvc. As I type this, the storage tank is being filled with freshly made salt water.

My Refugium is now plumbed and connected to the sump via another mag drive. It has very good flow going through it. Mounted below is the Dialyseas system. I have not gone through the setup of the Dialyseas yet. As I will be out of the country for a month, I figured I would wait till I returned. I still have not decided on the lighting that I will use for the Refugium. I plan on being filled not just with chaeto, but other plants as well.

I moved one of my RO systems from outside and mounted it in the Fish Room. I installed an auto top off in the sump connected to the RO. I ended up making 200 gallons of fresh RO water over the weekend.

More to follow shortly...

Thanks Wayne!

I have been running UV on my 150 gallon for a while now and haven't had any issues with pods. In fact, my tank is probably a pod magnet! I have kept a couple mandarins for over a year now who just feast on the pods. They thrive in my sump (my chaeto is full of them) and rock.

It really depends on the flow that you are putting through the UV canister. Higher flow will just kill algae and bacteria. If you dial the flow down real low, you'll kill parasites such as Ich and other Protozoan parasites. And I am sure pods...

Hope that helps clarify things!

Yes sir it does. Thank you very much. Now all I need to do is find the right UV to use on my tank.

Tank Update continued...

Tank Update continued...

My sump is 95% finished.

I still have the filter sock holder being made which will go inside along with some acrylic probe holders. I still need to place the miracle mud inside and will have a few more power heads installed to keep things mixed up. I will need a few more mag drives to attach to the UV Sterilizers (one of the few remaining items to plumb) and for my my GFO reactor and Fluidized Sand Reactor. I am also going to place some LED strips above the sump. So maybe 94% finished....

I mounted on the stand the controls for the two VorTech MP60's we installed on Friday. They are powerful! With just one installed, we were getting motion 8 feet away (on the other side of the tank)! I am going to order two MP40's for the center of the tank facing the glass.

My display tank is looking great! The sand has settled back down after installing the MP60's. I still have some rock work to do. I want to hide all of the lock line on the bottom of the tank, between the towers.

As mentioned in an earlier post today, I am still waiting for my LED hanging kits to be shipped by EcoTech. My wife and kids wanted to see what the tank would look like illuminated so I placed the lights from the two QT's and from the Refugium on top of the display.

The lighting doesn't look anything like it will with my 12 Radion units, but this will give you an idea....

That looks like a piece of artwork in the living room. In a couple of months it will be a piece of moving artwork in the living room!

Man that is looking nice. Are you going to use the miracle mud from ecosystems?

Thanks Wayne!

And yes... I am planning on using the Miracle Mud from EcoSystems. We just need to calculate how much I will need.

As far as the UV Sterilizer goes, the folks at Emperor Aquatics are very knowledgeable. You can call them and discuss UV and they will fit you with the right equipment for your needs.
