A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Maybe I missed it already, but if you haven't ... maybe you could snap an actual photo of the tank/room from the same perspective that this rendering is taken from:

First....awesome FTS Dan. Second....its FRIDAY!!!!! Has the fedex guy showed up yet????

Steve, it is good to hear from you!

I am in Las Vegas till Tuesday afternoon. My wife wanted to go see Madonna. Yes, the "Material Girl" or "Like a Virgin Girl." So we are being spoiled at the Aria, spending some time at one of the spas, going to see Jay Leno tonight and i'll get some card time downstairs.

To answer your question...no FedEx Friday this week. I did get my clear buckets in yesterday for the Skimmate Locker that I had ordered. I also received great news yesterday. The sand reactor that I had ordered from Emperor Aquatics is finally built and shipped this week. It is scheduled to be delivered on Monday!!! That has been a few months in the waiting.

I feel pretty comfortable being away for the five nights. I don't have to worry about my skimmer going bezerk and draining my sump. My daughter is home and is feeding twice daily and checking on things. And before I left, I got my APEX hooked up. I don't have all of the outlets programmed yet, but, I will get text messages and emails if something serious goes awry.

Impressive! Did Joe get skimmed out? ;-)

Is that the only way to glue corals in such a deep tank?

Superglue Gel is what I found works best.

I would love to find some contraption that could hold the corals in place while they are being glued.

Great idea on that top for a 5 Gallon Skimmer bucket. Love the frag tray as well.

dotcommer:

Check out the Skimmate Lockers from Avast Marine. I think that they may be the single best investment I have made for the money.

Three times before I had my skimmer go nuts and end up draining 20-40 gallons of SW from my sump. With the skimmate locker or super lockers, my skimmer pump shuts off when it gets full. I then get an email/text message from my Apex informing me that the skimmer bucket is full (letting me know something died or caused my skimmer to go bonkers).

I also ordered a pair of clear buckets so I can see when the bucket needs to be emptied. So far I have had no smell issues from the buckets. They are air tight and also have a carbon chamber on top.

Awesome work!! The tank is so spacious! I was wondering if you have taken par measurements on the sand? I think i saw a crocea down there?

Chris:

Thank you for the compliments!

I have not taken any par readings. Right now I have my Radions set at 77% and everything appears to be doing great. My clams, I have a crocea and a maxima are doing great! I still haven't put the TIR lenses on that will increase the penetration of the lights.

How about algae on the glass? With that depth and the stock radions has the light on the glass been low enough to hold down the algae?

Make sure you go have dinner at the Top of th World. Best time to go is right before sunset so you can see Vegas before the the strip is lite up. Food is amazing. It's at the Stratosphere hotel

I would love to find some contraption that could hold the corals in place while they are being glued.

Something I had done when not wanting to spend time with my hands in the water, for instance to glue corals upside down (example: Tubastrea hanging under a cave structure): I used pieces of wood to "push" the coral and/or the two part-epoxy. Kind of like a temporary holder used in construction. Once the epoxy is cured, I just remove that. In your case since you have these nice columns, you could probably use a couple of zip ties.

Note that nowadays I use both epoxy (for the long term solidity) with glue gel on both coral and rock sides (for the fast hold). It works really nicely.
