A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

You're very welcome, a tank like yours deserves recognition . Also I suppose it was about time I posted something instead of just gleaning knowledge from reef central.

Hey! Knowledge is everything in reef keeping. Well, you need some luck too! Don't be a stranger and if you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask!

Dan,

Be careful and don't try to blow any lines clear. Ozone on the lips and tongue burns, and it lasts awhile (days - weeks). So be very careful if you are trying to clear lines or check for back pressure.

02manywomen,

Thanks for your concern! I learned the hard way several months ago when I was adding Ozone through my skimmer. I used my teeth to pull an air hose off a venturi... I was brushing my tongue several times each day with toothpaste to get rid of the taste.

At lunch today, I stopped off at a local pet store and picked up a more powerful air pump. A Coralife Super Luft Pump. It generates air at 3.9 psi. I am going to try this pump out before I remove half of the carbon out of the reactor. I figure I can always return the pump if it doesn't outperform my existing.

Ozone Reactor Update

Ozone Reactor Update

So I think I have everything working fantastically!

I connected the new Super Luft Pump and immediately was generating 1 scfh on the Dwyer Air Meter. I took out about 1/2 gallon of Carbon and let things run for a while. After about 30 minutes or so, I was generating in excess of 2 scfh.

I raised the Ozone Reactor a few inches above the Carbon Reactor and based on o2manywomen's recommendation, I hung my Ozone Generator from my scaffold - above the Ozone Reactor. This will prevent any water from backing up into my Ozone Generator, in the case of a power outage.

I am going to run just the reactors and air pump for a few days and make sure that the air pressure remains constant before I turn the ozone back on.

Dan, i have been away for awhile, but the system is looking fantastic. Took me a couple hours to catch up on your build, but I enjoyed every minute of it.

One concern. Why are you not running an air dryer in between the air pump and the ozone generator? I know you lucky Arizona people don't have to deal with the normal humidity that we Floridians do, but inside the fish room itself, I assume that the air is quite humid. Your ozone output will be greatly decreased with humid air.

Where have you been???

It's good to hear from you! I thought about you a couple of weeks ago and wondered what was happening. How is your build going?

Thanks for the concern with regards to the humidity. I checked with the manufactures and they didn't recommend one. At the same time though, they make these for pools and spas - not aquariums. I did go ahead and order a Red Sea Air Dryer from Marine Depot. Just in case...

I just took a break from Reef Central for awhile. I am very active in my local reef clubs (Global mod on one BOD on the other). It became tiring updating three build thread simultaneously. When Reef Central had its connectivity/speed issues several weeks ago, I decided to take a break.

My tank is doing great. Lost some prized acros to new tank syndrome, but everything seems to have stabilized now. I will try to find the time to update my thread later today.

Can you please take a quick Picture of the ozone set up Sir?

Lawrence,

It looks pretty much like this, although I did make a couple of changes....

What's different???

I decided to hang my Ozone Generator from my stand so that it is 8 inches higher than my reactor. Right now it is being hung by some zip ties, however, I am going to drill a hole into my stand for a more permanent fix. I decided to raise the Ozone Generator to reduce the risk of having any water backup into the device. I also put a couple of sheets of styrofoam underneath the Ozone Reactor so I have some additional "fall" into the Carbon Reactor.

I swapped out the air pump for a Super Luft Pump. I am going to use the other air pump on my live Brine/Mysis Shrimp Tank.

The last change I made was reducing the amount of Carbon in the Carbon Reactor by 1 1/2 quarts. I get a lot more flow and air pressure this way.

That's great Dan! So what's in store for us (I mean you) tomorrow???? You know it's Friday right???

Absolutely amazing! I noticed your video of the fish room and realized it was your feeding system I commented on earlier. lol I looked at every page in this poste. lol I'll admit the only part I red were the captions but I couldnt get enough and was thrilled to see a few videos! I'm new to the site and pretty new to the "sport" and to see something like this just blows my mind! I apologize but I have to ask what a system like that goes for? I see it never ends with upgrading adding on etc. But about? Again wow! Great stuff! Thanks for sharing!
One last thing anything breeding in there, would that even happen?

Rob

Well, I am glad that you are back. You were missed!
