A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

I had to charge my iPad and it took 2 days to read 93 pages worth, but very inspirational

Awesome job man! :spin2::spin2::spin2:

I just finished reading everything and, good god. I am looking forward to maybe having one tang in my 65, but not until i get my other clown and a yellow coris wrasse. Just got new T5 lights, and well, that was most of my fish budget for the year.

Thanks guys! I hope that you didn't get too bored reading everything! Welcome to RC and thanks for following along!

OK now...

How about an updated pic of the QT section. All of them. :)

I thought you only had a few?

I have two dedicated 75 gallon QT's that are bare bottom and can be separated from my system when in use. Both have canister filters and both tanks can be medicated. If I am not using any medications, I run a separate UV system on them.

I also have a 150 gallon tank with a sand bed and a ton of live rock and chaeto. This tank can be separated from my system although I never can medicate anything in it. I mostly use it to separate fish that might be getting picked on.

Don't worry Joe I'm just a skinny white dude, haha

I hit the point were I've gone from skinny white dude to old over weight white dude with a memory that ..... Oh I can't remember so it couldn't have been interesting.

So here's the plan, we'll just get Dan busy with the camera dudes and we'll just slip in the back door with nets and bags in hand.

You probably didn't acclimate your corals to the lights for a long enough period.

I now run my lights at 100% but first started at 60% and slowly, over time, increased the strength. I am using one of the preset schedules with my time starting at 9:30 AM and ending at 10:30 PM. I have also added 30% cloud coverage and 10% storms.

Hope this helps!

First, thank you for sharing with everyone. Your shared knowledge is going to be so valuable for me as I continue through the planning or my build.

Hedge just asked me about what lighting I was going to use, and that made me think about your build. The Radion Pros are at the top of our list for lighting. Do you feel like you took any steps back with growth from your past experiences with MH?

Wife and I have AI Vega over one system and Orphek PR-156 over another and we have been less than happy. Have actually had to move sps from those tanks into other systems that are running under MH to save them.

Joe,

Just be careful not to walk into any Javelina or step on any rattle snakes. Oh, did I mention to you that I have dogs??

Juicy steaks can detract a dog. As for the snakes, well, I just hate snakes. They scare the bejesus out of me. So you know I wont be jacking your house in the near future.

I am very happy with my Radion's. My good friend Dan, that runs the LFS, loves MH. I think he is just old school even though he is a kid.

It would not be a fair comparison to put my Radions in this build up to the MH's I had in my 150. Here my tank is 48" compared to 24". I love the colors that I get with my Radions, together with the ramping on and off, cloud coverage and storm modes. As for growth???? I am astonished by what has taken place with my SPS in a years time. I usually notice the growth of the coral on top along with their width. Someone just pointed out how much they have encrusted over my rock towers.

As for my timing, the lights slowly ramp up at 9:30 and are ramped down at 10:30, black at 11:30. They probably are on at 100% for 3.5 hours. I have have a 30% chance of cloud coverage and 10% chance of rain in the late afternoons.

Hope this helps!

Trying to escape the heat for a week. Off to Sunriver, Oregon for a week of relaxation.

Trying to beat the heat in Sunriver? That's the hot side of Oregon. That's where everybody else in the state goes to catch some heat and sun.

There are a lot of cool little lakes in that area. Lots of bass. Water skiing on Prineville reservoir is a kick in the pants.

Your tank is amazing.. spent the last hours reading through this thread and now find myself wishing i wasnt finished :)

Thanks for sharing this inspiring build!

really late to the part but just wanted to add that this is the best build thread ever, your tanking is gorgeous - congrats!

Dan thanks for the feed back on the Radion Pro.
I know I will hem and haw about this decision until the final hour, and then I will second guess it until the end of time.

It's been 3 months since any pics of the system. His about some FTS?
Come on and lift your skirt up, the boys want to see the goodies.
