A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Everything is growing so beautifully, Dan! I absolutely love how nicely your SPS colonies are growing in. Love it!!!

Thanks! I don't notice the growth until I look at older pictures. I guess I stare too much at the tank! One thing I do notice is how everything is now encrusted!

This may have already been mentioned but is that two sohals? Just curious how they get along? Also those powder blues!! Absolutely gorgeous! How did things go introducing them together?

Thanks!

Yes, I kinda feel like I have Noah's Ark going on with respect to Tangs. I pretty much have two of every kind. LOL

If you search the thread, you will find pics from my quarantine process with the Sohals. It went on for a few months as I was constantly separating them (using egg-crate) in a 75 gallon breeder, until they wouldn't pick on one another. All my pairs of tangs get along well with one another. My large Lopezi Tangs and one of my Yellow Eyed Kole Tangs are probably the most aggressive. My Achilles Tangs are pretty passive.

Hi Dan, I have just read this entire thread and your tank and care are amazing. I have just set up a 350 gallon and running for 3 days. My LFS is picking up 7 small tangs for me tomorrow at the whole sellers. I just hope to use your techniques and have you success so I too can have a lot of tangs in my tank. So any words of advice or things you would have done differently would be appreciated. Also are you still using and liking your genesis system..

My first concern would be that your tank is too new. Wait a good month to six weeks before you put any livestock in. You need to let your tank cycle. Three days is much too soon. With regards to the tangs, its good in certain respects that you are acclimating them at the same time. Just have plenty of rock for them to hide in and plenty to eat. I believe the success I have had with my tangs and fish in general, is feeding a lot at first. I try to get them eating a variety of live, frozen and pellet foods. Make sure that the aggressive tangs that you introduce are done last.

With regards to the Genesis System. Yes, I love it!!!

Thanks for the pics update. The tank is looking amazing and so are the colors on the fish. I love the large group shots. Fish look very happy :-) Excellent Job!!!!

Very impressive. Cool selection of fish & corals. Love it!!
With having to feed heavy in the sea horse tank do you find that you get a cyano build up?

Thanks Greg! I am loving your Reef On The Prairie!

Yes and no. My seahorse tank is connected to my main system but at a very low turnover point. I have an external API canister filter connected - that helps. I notice that when my caulerpa grows out of control, a lot of the food gets trapped underneath the vegetation and I end up getting some cyano. In recent months I have added a couple "nano" powerbeads that seem to help with cyano and not bother the seahorses.

Joe, I can get you whatever you want.

Let me quote Queen

I want it all
I want it all
I want it all
And I want it now

But there is that problem we all suffer with called the pocketbook.

Actually, right now my tank is doing GREAT everything is stable, things are growing. The wife even has her Clownfish living in a rose anemone so she is happy. I almost hate to unset the apple cart with this move to Florida coming up.

I will say it is really nice to see your tank coming along so well and to hear how good things are doing.

Joe

Hi Dan, thanks for the reply to my questions. Just wanted to clarify. I know this tank is to new and yes it is cycling as we speak. I have intention on placing my tangs in the new tank till they have been properly quarantined. I just had to ask question since you have inspired me with your beautiful build. I now have a total of 9 tangs that will be introduced to the 350 at the same time.
Your pics are beautiful. I hope to have such a beauty.
