A Reefaholic's 1000+ Gallon Mixed Reef System Build

Nice to see many of you already at the event this year. I think we've got some really good representation from the Large Reef Tank forums at MACNA 2013!!

It's about time for some updates is it not? Went to MACNA this year just wanting to go to more speakers and soak it in, not looking to spend a lot and looking forward to meeting some that I speak to frequently on the forums (Nice to meet you guys!). I made it through Saturday and had just bought a book for the Bangaii Project (Don't know if I'll ever read but support the cause). Talked to wife Saturday night and she made the mistake of saying you've not spent very much this trip:celeb1:

Sunday morning came along and some clams caught my eye and secured a couple and then bought another dozen or so SPS frags after that. TSA inspected the cooler I checked into the airport Sunday and did not pack like it originally was...Half the frags were in cups and they managed to pop them open and they ended up draining about 90% of there water in the cooler. Frags seem to be okay thus far and have been through one dipping but time will tell if that trip was a little too stressful for them.

My current project is getting a 200 gallon QT system up and running. Consists of a 125, 75, and sump and using another three tier system inspired by rocketengineer's design. I had taken phone pic earlier but need to prime, paint, and then get tanks in place so I can make short work of the plumbing. Already got a skimmer, return, and just need to go pick up some valves and I'll be set for setting up this system.

Pics were crappy because of phone's WB so I just applied picture effect on SmugMug. (You get the point)

Kiddo stares at the tank more than me. Nice high chair up front of tank will usually keep him occupied while I'm cleaning and mom is not around!!!

Yawn.... Looking at that last pic.. I am tired...

OK

Where are the new pictures... LOL

I am staying motivated through the lens/camera of others.

I started reading through the thread a little while ago getting ideas for a future big build I am planning years in the future. We're in Hawaii now on vacation and we got in some great hiking, diving (the night manta ray night dive was surreal), and snorkeling...until I broke my foot on the lava rock at Cpt Cook monument. A quick kayak trip back and a short visit to Kona emergency room and I'm free to sit on my butt and enjoy the rest of your build.

I really appreciate the extra effort to share your successes and struggles on the build! I am taking copious notes. Keep up the good work.

Oh that sucks. Was it at least at or near the end of your trip?

Today was the last day so it all worked out great. Like I said, I'm really enjoying the build here an have a good excuse to do nothing bit sit here and read while enjoying the view. I'm literally keeping a notebook of lessons learned so threads like this one are invaluable for learning.

Halmus, I sent you a PM. I'll be in Hawaii in Feb and need details about the Manta Dive

So sorry about the incident and glad someone can benefit from my mistakes I've outlined! I have no problem pointing out I've screwed up here/there and hope that others don't have the same problem/oversight. I've got a million things I want to improve....With time but I'm very engineer focused so I'll never be SATISFIED! :uhoh3:
