A Reefaholic's 1000+ Gallon Mixed Reef System Build

Thanks everyone for the votes and the congratulations. I just put an order in for a couple little projects I'm working on.

After my alk spike in August continually fight the effluent rate on my CR....That being said decided my last effort to stabalize alk was to get a cole parmer pump to make the effluent rate rock solid. Looking for a Cole Parmer Masterflex 77301-40 or 77301-20 and think this will make things super stable in my tank to get what I want out of it. Corals continue to recover from my August alk event and I've put a large focus on fish so I can continue to enjoy.

Right now latest livestock list in my mind...

DT:

Fish
5 Lyretail Anthias
1 Buckshot Clown
1 Black and White Ocelaris
2 Naked Clowns
1 Midas Blenny
1 Starry Blenny
1 Bicolor Blenny
5 Bangaii Cardinal
6 Blue/Green Chromis (Yes, the ones that were originally 50 killed each other off one by one, might try at later date to add more because the schooling was amazing. Should have just put a fake shark to float around in there:))
1 Helfrichi Firefish

Invert:
2 Cleaner Shrimp
1 Fire blood Shrimp
50 Trochus Snails
3 Brittle Starfish
10 Sandsifting Starfish
2 Fromia Red Star Fish

Growout Tank:
1 Hippo Tang
1 Kole Eye Tang
***These will be added when I move over all the tangs from QT.

QT System:

125
5 Yellow Tang
2 Hippo Tang
2 Naso Tang
Male Lyretail

75
1 Sailfin Tang
1 Red Sea Sailfin Tang
1 Mimic Yellow Tang
1 Powder Brown Tang
1 Scopus Tang

20
14 Bangaii Cardinals (Originally had 19 but a few had birth defects related to swim bladder) Next few days will be moving them from live brine soaked in selcon to mashed mysis. Once they start growing will try to obtain male/female to start breeding regularly. Might try to get 2-3 pairs going to try to help relieve some of the wild caught ones.

Some other fish I plan on buying next round:

- Pair of blue throat triggerfish
- 5 Pyramid Butterfly
- 4 Carpenter Fairy Wrasse (1 M/3 F)
- 3 Cleaner Wrasse

I really am back and forth on a purple tang but gut tells me know. Thoughts on next round of fish?!? Additions you'd love to have? I'm fine with spending a little money on rarities but not Dr. Seuss Fish prices:)

I love the idea of the mini school of pyramid butterflies! What about a trio of genicanthus angels? Such a variety of sweet wrasses and angels out there that you could add. A Fowleri tang would be sweet as well. Good luck.

You're representing Indiana well with your build!

What genicanthus angel are you referring to? Still looking at wrasses I'd like too and might add a few more to this order...In regards to the Folweri, out of the large Acanthurus I actually really love the Orange Shoulder but afraid it'd get way too aggressive over time. Further thoughts?

Have you checked eBay on those dosing pumps? Lots are showing up on there lately.

Yes, I've been watching closely but have not came across those exact ones. If anyone comes across one of the two models I mentioned please don't hesitate to PM me where you know of one for sale. Trying to find one used since they carry a hefty pricetag new. I've got a fellow RCer on the hunt for one for me too and he seems to have a special way of finding these:spin1:

Ah okay well really the orange shoulders are sweet also, but they are quite mean sometimes. My other thought was Sohal or Clown, but same goes for them. As far as the Genicanthus - possibly the Bellus or Watanabei. The males of all genicanthus are awesome IMO. My personal favorite is the Genicanthus Semifasciatus but can be a little pricier than the others.

That's definitely a stunning fish but looks like it'd be hard to come by and might prefer a cooler running system to thrive than mine. Definitely something I'd like to collect sometime in my lifetime:)

Next fish order is likely going to be delayed, fish in QT developed ICH last Wednesday and I lost a yellow mimic tang and sailfin tang. Really bumbed but started dosing cupramine Wednesday night and since Sunday have not seen any visible spots of ICH on the fish. QTs are a love/hate relationship with me but know that the system is better off doing this beforehand. Hopefully at the end of this month I'll move them over and can order another round first week of next year. How long does everyone here treat with Cupramine? Seachem recommends two weeks but seems the more popular time is 28+ days because of the ICH life cycle. Dose right now is @ .25 ppm on copper and holding strong.

In a more positive update, I think I've got a source for a Cole Parmer pump I've been on the search for the past 6-8 weeks. Awaiting pictures but hope to have it in place next week so I can make my alk ROCK solid with a much more consistent effluent rate.

Wife told me that's the end of my Christmas shopping:)

In a few years he'll be doing all the things DCANDERSON's kids are doing (check out his thread). Pad lock the fish room door. He is growing and it is amazing how fast time flies. Make sure you don't miss these years they only come once.

now thats the best picture I've seen on RC in a long time!!!!! Tablet at 7 mos.....why not!!!

Exactly!

I just read that, guess it could have been worse. I read of someone having their kid add a gallon of milk to tank because the fishies were thirsty! It's funny you say this...I just was at Lowes this weekend looking at a dialpad lock for my fish room. That and cabinet above fish tank will be latched from inside so my main risk is the front of the tank being hit/scratched. :hmm3:

Years ago when I was in the Air Force my son got into the Methylene Blue. I saw that blue tongue and RACED like there was no tomorrow, I ran the gate on the base and flew to the ER. Turns out Methylene Blue is just a die they use, so it was no big deal (however running the gate did become a big deal).

Joe

Trust me, he will beat you best defenses so plan well.

The milk is funny it really is

That's funny! I don't think I can plan for everything as I remember how I was always scheming as a kid. They say it comes back to you, hopefully he's not as big of a hellion as I was!
