A Reefaholic's 1000+ Gallon Mixed Reef System Build

Today is rock work day....Got the heaters running in the garage and they are bringing up 31 degree temp! After that hopefully I'll have some pictures to share later on?!?!?! Woohoo!

About time, right? I originally planned to just set up frag system for a year or so while I saved up the money to buy things so I would have had money saved back and a budget but because I found this tank when I did, I've just worked on it while I could and had the spare money. No reason to use credit cards other than making money off points right? Stick it to the man!

It's already 52 degrees so I'm just reviewing Paul's articles about aquascaping one last time to make sure I don't screw up the principles. I was going to do a pillar but the more and more I look at it, I'm not so sure I want to go that route. I'm excited and hope to have water starting to run into it by next weekend! After that, it'll just be running on it's own closed loop and LaCl drip completely dark until phosphates drop out of the rock. (Could be two weeks, could be two months) Once that's in check, plan to open the valves from the other system which I'll be putting in place today/tomorrow.

Wayne, I'm putting in an order for a couple of those wp-40s....Going to give them a try in my frag tank and move my MP40s to the main tank as well as buy a couple MP60s for the DT.

Saves me some money and gets me a couple to give a try for a few months.

Sounds like a winner. I am just awaiting everyones opinion on those pumps until I pull the plug for about 3 or 4 of them.

Just taking a breather from all the fumes today....I've just been focusing on wrapping up some plumbing, framing of aquascaping, and lastly the closed loop under the sand bed.

I'm finished with all of the above minus the closed loop and getting ready to go do that...Once I have the closed loop framework under the sand I'll start putting the framing in so I can start moving the rock in box by box. I did not have any help today but should have some tomorrow as a few members from INDMAS volunteered to come over and help out the pres:thumbsup:

Here's some pictures I snapped of the process, always trying to make sure the community can see techniques used.

Bucket of RO/DI for keeping the bit cool...I won't even use tap water for this:spin1:

Drill used with a 1 1/4" diamond bit designed for mortar/brick and I've not burnt it up yet and cut a bunch of holes.

Bad picture of bit.

Bit would not still be good if I was not constantly giving it water to keep cool.

Had to open garage, no ventilation was giving me quiet the headache. Here's the template of the tank on the floor with the PVC structure. I've also followed the golden rule for proportions and will have the 5/3 rule followed. Left side is the 5 and right side is 3.

Rocks simply pop on. This is a two sided cut which is flat on both sides. I'll trip top pipe and cap it with a one sided rock when I do rock tomorrow.

Left side will have a bit platform and an arch going towards front as well as arch going over to center portion.

Between these two structures I'll have a "valley" and it will hopefully use the forced perspective concept where it narrows to make you think it's longer than it really is.

I think my back my hurt after tomorrow! If I can wrap up the closed loop footprint under this structure I'll be working on some rock tonight maybe. I've also thought about setting up tripod tomorrow with timelapse to watch the scaping go up! How often should I do it if I want it to snap photos for a 10 hour period?

Please DO!!!

Set it for one every 2 seconds. I have a JVC something another... and the 2 seconds turn out to like an hour a minute or is that a minute and hour?

I'm using a DSLR so I'm not sure I can do that many for that long of a period of time. I'll be installing timelapse software that ties into canon rebel T3i and tells it to snap a photo at a predetermined rate. I've got 32 GB memory sticks but don't think the timelapse needs to be that high quality!

WOW... That would be a 6000x??? video... wait.. my vid camera does 1080 time lapse... as it is.. but that would be insane.

Keep in mid there are about 25-30 frames per second in video.

I got mine yesterday. Definitely moves a lot of water but with my 36" wide tank not much of a wave is created. I'm sure if I had a 2nd one and synced it on a timer it would get the job done. I'm impressed with the build quality and they carry similar weight as my 6105's.

Yea steve I've been lurking in the thread on hem too, it seems they say 200+ you might want two of the pumps. Seem to be a great value thus far

Yeah I am debating whether or not to do it since I already have the tunze. I have to keep playing with the settings and see if I can synch them up and get some nice wave action going.

Aquascape Framing/Closed Loop --> DONE

Aquascape Framing/Closed Loop --> DONE

Ok, have a bit of black painting to do tonight still so it dries for the morning and can get the aquascaping finished tomorrow? This gives a better idea of the closed loops.

Full Shot.
