A Reefaholic's 1000+ Gallon Mixed Reef System Build

I agree, and the thread issue on the pumps is no longer an issue :D

Love to see a simple diagram for how that's plumbed though, you got a disconnect for each pump at the bottom for maintenance, pumping the water to the to of each vessel, with valves if you need to disconnect/turn things off, a cross over valve which I'm guessing to pump water from one into the other for mixing, hoses that I assume go to somewhere else, directly to tank? And then an additional input on each pump for unforeseen addition?

I've thought about doing something similar, but one thing always kept me a bit worried, and that's potential bacterial issues in the tanks, considering the water is pure going in there wouldn't it be a massive breeding ground?
 
There"s already lots of bacteria in a reef tank. A little more won"t hurt :)

Actually I think between top offs and water changes, the water will be changed out pretty often. I just wonder what salt he'll use. Some leave a lot of crud that probably needs to be flushed from time to time. A bottom drain would be good for that.

I think I'm going to make a scaled down version of this water station for my build. I have (2) 55g Tamco potable water tanks coming. What I like about them is they have an opening equal to the diameter of the tank and they already come with a valve/spigot.

Thanks everyone on the compliments. I've been working on additional projects trying to bring this tank closer and closer to "completion". I'm on call over the holiday weekend but hope it gives me some time at home where I can get some other components wrapped up.

To answer some of the questions above...

@Bilk, I'll be using AquaVitro Salinity Salt and switching from Red Sea Coral Pro for that very reason. Tank has a good 10-12" opening at top and used unions so I could easily remove tanks for cleanings. Good bath of vinegar, water, and rub down with a mop just for that purpose should keep them nice and clean.

@sfsuphysics, here's an explanation. Let me know if you have any questions:) I need to figure out an automatic method to pull the salt in some way too:)

OK I have that method... you will need to add two more ball valves though.

My chromis have always played highlander in my tank. 7 down to 1,5 down to 1,5 down to one. After losing them I figure the one I have left is all powerful and immortal.
 
I've really been slacking on updates...I will try to get an update up this weekend as I've got 6 Atlantiks hung, substrate is in, Calcium Reactor hooked up, etc but still waiting on my backordered Sea Swirls. Once I have those I should be able to have the system all tied together so really hoping that I get the units next week so this is not further delayed!

WHERE ARE THE PICTURES OF THE TANK ALREADY???????? Come on man....I need to live vicariously thru you now since my tank no longer has corals, the fish will all be gone in a few days and then it will be drained!!!!!

Oh wow, just looked at their retail locations and there's one right across the bay from me.. . $5 in bridge tolls and maybe $5 in gas and if I can stuff one of these into my Prius... and I'll be set :D

Edit: scratch that, that's just a place they'll deliver to, freight will still be added... *pout*
 
How do you heat the SW before you put it in the tank during the water change.

I will assume that you have the RO sitting there.

Transfer the ammount you are going to do for the water change.
Make up SW
Heat it
Transfer it in

Sorry guys, I promise I'll work on some pictures tonight. I've been busy, give me a break! Fingers crossed that the sea swirls arrive this week...

As far as heating the water, I don't. I use a LiterMeter III for continuous water changes (150 in a day) which makes heating a reservoir of 200 gallons of water a waste of energy. Should I ever need to get water up to temp quickly I can easily drop a few heaters into the reservoir but hope I don't ever have to do any large water changes at once. Stability is key and the LMIII is one of the best investments I've made to a reef system.
