A Reefaholic's 1000+ Gallon Mixed Reef System Build

Amazing build thread, Dustin! Looking forward to being back in Indianapolis for the INDMAS swap in 2015. Hope the 2014 swap went well!

Check out this recent article to get a sneak peek of my new tank

Was happy I got to go and will see you at INDMAS swap, it's quickly approaching! Tim (Aquavista) was not selling this year at WORC or our swap due to him being between tanks/houses transitions and MrFish is no longer selling, both a bummer!

Tim, I need to frequent my build thread more often...Can't wait to see this beast in action. When I come to WORC next year maybe I can bring you some good IPAs and check out your tank?!?

Do you have a couple of wrasses handy that you could drop in your QT? e.g. leopard, coris, six-line, etc. I have also read that green clown gobies (Gobiodon histrio) will really chow down on red bugs.

I'm not going to have to worry about it now...Both colonies RTNd in QT over night and was very frustrating morning yesterday. Still unsure why this happened as I used my old tank water and params were perfectly in check.

Dustin hows your Calcium reactor from Bill Wann doing? I'm not sure to buy or not! Tank is looking ready for more frags!
Best Regards

CR is still doing great. I've went through about 30 lbs of calcium media in a year and now am going through it really quickly as tank matures/frags duplicate. Seems at this pace I'll start going through a bucket of CR media every 3-6 months.

Thanks for the info Dustin and following up on Steve's Q & your response: I have never used Zeo media..
1 Do U have to also use "an appropriate carbon source should be added on a continual basis to ensure population viability; Reef BioFuel performs this task efficiently and without polluting the system."
2. How long have u used the Zeo media

Sorry, I've never used zeo media either. Mistakenly put wrong link above! I use Neo Mag from Brightwell:

http://brightwellaquatics.com/products/neomagt.php

On a large system I don't think I'd want to spend the money on zeo products and think that zeo makes it all a maintenance nightmare. While I see beautiful reefs running the products, just seems like a huge balance of chemical a, b, c, d, etc........Leroy, don't yell at me!

I am with U Dustin as the less we fuss with our systems the better. I appreciate your response. My previous success in 180 then 320 was with dosing Mag Calc & Alk for the first year or so and gradually from after six months move to rely mostly on Calc reactor and Kalk reactor with minor supplements of MAG Alk & Cal if I see my corals not as open. I also keep on hand combiSan and liquid aragonite. After things are in balance and I stop adding coral and fish then the system runs smoothly. I still have almost another year before I am done adding fish and corals. Meanwhile watching how the corals are acting and info from APEX. Not too much testing of anything unless I see that things are not as open as usual!! Thanks again

KISS method works, I think the more I fiddle with my tank the less happy the inhabitants are! Is it time for some REAL updates to this thread?!?

I know, I know. My tank is filthy, it's getting a cleanup as I have the day off and going to try to snap pictures after it's cleaned up after lots of scrubbing! :wildone:
