A Splash of Color - My SPS Peninsula Reef

I still not seeing sand. ;)

Greg,
It is probably well soaked Reef flakes or of the such, knowing Biggles, he is probably soaking some "High Quality" flakes as we speak, don't be fooled by Biggles, he always has something up his sleave :)

Well, yesterday I went out and bought two coral plus. I put them in with two blue plus and an actinic. The look is really nice! On the blue side but that is how I like it.
The coral plus do have a slight pink cast to them but with the blue +s running and the radiums, it doesn't show at all.
Andrew, you da man! Good call on the coral + !
I think the closest giesemann/d-d bulb would be the lagoon blue/azure but it isn't the same. The look is similar but the c+ is slightly more pink.

I hear ya.. I tried one. I found it too pink. It really changed the look of the whole tank..
The c+ has some but it's not overwhelming like the Fiji purple..
I'm going to see how this bulb combo plays out for a while..

Each and everyone of those SSC's, while only a small variation of the others, are such stunning corals. I guess they're classic favourites for a reason :bum: The growth pattern on mine is similar to the top left as I have it mounted in the same sort of way, coming out of a branch horizontally. It's going to look fantastic once it get's growing under the Radium :D

I've been trying to get my hands on a SSC for months now, every time I visit Dave's he's just sold one the day before

Now I find out there's several variants of them .... bloody hell.

Ben

Need to get there sooner! :hammer: Dave gets some nice SSC's in :eek1: Have you been to the coral nights at all?? Say hello to the friendly redhead that's there sometimes, he's alright :wildone: I only bite a little

A. microclados in the pink and green SSC colors is an awesome and relatively easy acro to keep. It loves good surging flow to flourish and has very strong PE during full lighting a bit like milli's. You won't have a problem holding the strong contrasting colors with your lighting mate

Those SSC looks great Andrew, all the ones that come up for sale around here are either too expensive or not nearly as nice as the oe you keep over there.

I agree with the T5 combo with radiums. I had run the Giesemann Actinic+ as well as their pure actinic and then lots of different combos. The last combo I tried was the B+ and KZ FP and it looked ok but the colors were not as good. I switched back last week to 2 B+ and 2 C+ I agree it is probably the winning combo for the 4 bulbs with MH.

Tank is look sweet my friend, wish I had access to so many nice colonies, I would probably stop this madness of seeding my tank with tiny frags.

Thanks Joe, i'm very lucky to have access to the cool acros being collected now days. I'm sure there may be different combos to run with the Radiums that won't do any harm to colors but the B+ & C+ combo with or without an actinic is an excellent place to start if you're not sure what to supplement your halides with. :)

Thanks for the info on the bulbs.. I think the equivalent giesemann bulb is the aquablue coral (or d-d aquablue plus)
I used to use this a lot over my old reef... I'm going to give them a try again..
Since they are a little more white than my d-d lagoon blue and the aquablue special (damn names of these bulbs are all the SAME) I might try two pure actinic, 1 blue plus and 2 coral plus.. Worth a try..
Thank you Jedi master!!

Hey Matt, any combo of those last three bulbs you listed will see you in good stead i think mate. :)

free spag for life??? "¦"¦"¦
And now we are waiting for your new creation"¦..lotus flower"¦.

I guess i'll have to actually make the bloody thing now.........:spin3:

So if I understand you acro masters right, since the fixture ships with 4 Actinics it should swap out 2 Actinics and replace with a B+ and a C+?

I'm no acro master but i would be doing what you are considering and swapping out at least two of those actinics mate.

I still not seeing sand. ;)

Trust bloody you to remind everyone i didn't chuck any in yet Greg lol........:uhoh2:

I think that's about right. And if that's too dim for you, you could use 1 actinic, 2 b+ and a c+...

I think your single actinic combo would be the way i'd go Matt.

Sorry Andrew for the sidebar, thanks Matt.

Don't be silly Mike, the whole point of our journals is to learn from each other so feel free to have a sidebar here any time mate.

No Perry, i was just too lazy to throw it in lol.............

I'm glad you found the mix of bulbs looks the goods Matt, if the Giesemann isn't the same i will be staying with the ATI coral plus because i have a great deal of confidence in it and see no reason to mess with something i know gives me the results i am chasing. :)

Matt I think, if you want to see red, you should add a fiji purple

I have tried that bulb along with the ATI purple plus - i would strongly recommend you don't run either with the Radium unless you want drab colors on the side that bulb is running.

I hear ya.. I tried one. I found it too pink. It really changed the look of the whole tank..
The c+ has some but it's not overwhelming like the Fiji purple..
I'm going to see how this bulb combo plays out for a while..

I ran both for 2 months each with poor colors as a result. The Radium and coral plus bulb give you all the red spectrum you need, a purple tips the balance into the same territory running too many red LED's does - crap colors from a spectrum more like above the water than below it.

Lovin the shot of the 4 different SSC pieces. :eek1: Good stuff buddy

Thanks mate :)

I've been trying to get my hands on a SSC for months now, every time I visit Dave's he's just sold one the day before

Ben

Dave gets SSC pieces in quite regularly Ben, i ignored one the last time i was there because i have three different ones already. The one i left wasn't colored up and i doubt most reefers would have even realised what it was including Dave. The biggest problem facing most wild acro collectors is not actually knowing when they are staring at a stunner with the sulks as opposed to a dud colored acro. I'm pretty sure Dom thought he was taking home a dog the day i made him buy a crappy looking acro at Dave's lol.

I actually like Dave and the way he does business, so much so i offered to supply him with a few frags every now and then that i wanted nothing for in return just as a way of supporting him and the shop. Unfortunately Dave knows very little about SPS and said no thanks due to his worry that i might bring in pests etc to his systems - the SPS one with a trickle filter lol. Anyway it's a shame because i had thought it would be a good way for me to supply guys like you with the stuff they are having trouble getting hold of and Dave could easily make 20-30 bucks off each frag, he'd be happy, you'd be happy getting a good sized colored up high quality frag and i'd be happy being able to give back a little to a guy who has been good to me. ;)

Williamstown aquarium is a fantastic LFS for SPS and the guys there keep their own SPS tanks and know what they are talking about so for someone getting into SPS and wanting trust worthy advice and stock recommendations there is no other store in Melbourne to go to. If you have plenty of experience and know what you're looking at when it comes to potential acro colors then Reeflections isn't bad but i've never seen anything in there that comes close to the consistent quality acros that i encounter at the other two stores i use exclusively now.

Sorry for the LFS ramble.........

One way or another i'll make sure you get your SSC Ben :)

Dom is a chef Ben so it's highly likely he's always got a knife on him......... don't argue over an acro on coral night is the advice i'd give you mate......

B+,C+ & actinic looks like this btw........

I definitely second all of this, I haven't been to Williamstown very much though, might make a trip on the weekend to check it out a little further!

I am known to be proficient with knife handling, so proficient I managed to slice just fingernail off my finger and no finger not too long ago :eek1:

That is one nice look! :D I can't remember the bulb combo I currently have haha

Thanks Dom and Andrew. The two stores I actually use are Willy town and Daves. I live over on Point Cook so I'm lucky that I don't need to travel far to get to them.

Agree with what you've both wrote and have had a few frags from Keith at Willys which I've found to be fantastic quality.

Hopefully I'll bump into you both next time I'm in the shop, can't miss me, I think I'm the only Geordie* Reefer this side of Melbourne.

* Geordie is someone from Newcastle, UK, also known as the land of the Newcastle Brown Ale or as I like to know it as "Gods country" ;)

My god man! You guys down under are hooked up with the best! A microclados with ssc colours  Delivery of my new MH delayed by 2 weeks :mad2: Did receive the long box today with the ATI B+ and C+ so I guess a small step forward. Photo bomb us with a few more pics like the last one Andrew :eek1:

Oh no not a Geordie :worried: haha it could almost be a joke... so a redhead and a geordie walk into an aquarium :lolspin:
Definitely come say hello if you ever see me around the stores though :) Have you got a tank journal or anything around mate?
