A Splash of Color

I thought you put that little poop coral on a soda bottle cap for a moment to teach it a lesson for not being amazing

Locking ring from a 1 1/4" union barrel so it's not really little Tim. It's pretty disgusting looking but it's not poopy. It's fresh off the reef and has a lot of disgusting brown skin tissue in the wild with purple tips for the last 1/2" or so on every small branch shoot.
Looks like A. secale to me and i basically bought it just to see how purple all over i can get it. I normally avoid anything with that ghastly brown/olive skin tissue as it's highly likely to always take the shine off the colony except for the bright tips obviously.
You also never know what one off surprise piece you might luck onto, something that reacts very differently to similar colored pieces. Sometimes i just roll the dice and i liked the growth pattern and shape of the colony. I'm going to leave it on the sand for a week or two and just watch what direction the pigments take due to the spectrum change.

Nice browning - what caused it?

The sun and the GBR water did it i think Kevin - he's a little ugly duckling mate but you never know your luck :)

Some of you will remember a little while back i rescued two pieces of echi from Deer Park after Dave poisoned everything painting floor sealer in the shop.....:debi:
Now they were almost white and washed out but they were sitting next to each other and had the same growth structure so i thought i would put them together to make a bigger colony - why not.

This shows you how much research i try to put in and how hard it is to get Dave to bag an acro.........

" Did those two bits of echi you tried to kill look like Chris collected them from the same colony Dave ? "

" Yep i'm pretty sure they're both the same echi, the smaller bit might have been broken off the bigger bit "

" So they had identical blue coloration when you took them out of the bags ? "

" Pretty sure all the echi branches Christian sent were the same stuff "

" Bag both of them for me please mate "

" But they're just common echi, you have lots already "

" Yes and i want more Dave "

" Why not take one and something different "

I then yelled out loudly to Mark who was in the next room:

" Mark, can you come and bag these echi's for me please mate, Dave won't let me have them "

" Oh okay, okay " - Dave gets a bag out

" Chuck both bits in the same bag mate, just jam them together so they don't rattle around breaking bits off each other "

" Hmmmm, i think i'll put each one in it's own bag "

" No just put that other bit in there too "

" You sure ? "

" Yes i'm bloody sure Dave, put it there now, do it Dave ! "

" Okay then i'll put them in the same bag "

" Thanks Dave "

Mark then took me out the back of the shop for a smoke as he knows how stressed out Dave makes me when all i want to do is buy a coral.....:hmm4:

I walk back in 5 minutes later and.....

" I decided to put them in their own bags after all "........... and then he gave me that Dave smile...........

I want you to look at the pic above, see the two similar but OBVIOUSLY different color variant echi's which means from different colonies which means they will sting each other since the bases are next to each other.

Now i have to pry one off which will probably cause the other to fall off just so i can separate the bases........... total debacle and all because Dave is a bloody liar............

' Pretty sure '................. pretty sure my arse Dave :hammer:

Haha, don't worry Andrew I know you can pick 'em. Just some teasing, it's so rare something looks brown in your tank you gotta take a swing when it pops up :spin1:

Unbelievable.

It looks uglier by the day so far Tim.

Unbelievable.

Marty

It's a joke Marty !

I swear, I keep coming back to this thread for the write ups as much as I do for the Acro por...

Dave is the one who starts all these dramas, i just want to play with stuff at the shop and have a good time :)

Andrew is the best reefer in Australia down under. :fish2::beachbum:

I love you too Kevin :love1:

I also bet Dave tried to give you a huge discount on the twin echo's.

Marty

No idea Marty, they were probably $20- each or less since they looked pretty bad. I doubt anyone else would have bought them they way they looked at the time.

30/12/16 - a piece that Dave poisoned quite well i think

It's what i call a 'candlestick' spath. In the ocean it would have dark green, almost black branches with very intense pinky/red tips that only extend down about 3/4" with a sudden pigment shift to the dark branch pigment.
In our systems it will likely have a lot more pinky/red coverage than it had growing on the GBR. I know this because Dom was with me and i made him get his as yet unexploded Samsung phone out to assist me in confirming the 'candlestick' call.

Rest assured btw, if i'm ever with Dom at the shop and his phone goes up in his pocket i'll get as much as i can on my iphone. I may have to stop filming if it looks like he's going to jump in the acro tank to put himself out, if he goes for a flubber tank i'll just keep rolling :smokin:

Here's a tip - look at the front branch closest to you in the pic. See the very sharp change from very light pigments at the tip to a sudden darker shade the rest of the way down.
Green pigments hold best and fade last in fresh collected acros - hence why you can just make out the green polyps in the lower areas. Pinks and reds pale out the fastest under stress which is why the almost colorless but pinkish tips on the piece were pointing to a candlestick. Anyway i'm rambling....

27/1/17 - heading in the right direction

The main piece of that new prostrata i chopped up paled for a few days and then decided life on biggles reef wasn't so bad. Saturating back up well, the blue pigment is a nice shade i haven't had before personally which eases the green pain i see coming on as the branch pigments intensify.......... :blown:

One day I'm going to get the nicest spath I can kind find online (impossible to find locally) and name him the "Biggles Spath". Already saving the spot where it will reside. I can't think of any other Acro better suited.

Unless Biggles approves a Sarmentosa originating from Australia.

Hey biggles I saw this today and thought of you. What's the deal?

What? You haven't heard of the Aussie habit of drinking and running?
... and then running into each other?
There's a reason, they were sent to that island...

This picture and your signature are hilarious:
