A Splash of Color

yes what a mess... clear that out, put it in some boxes and send it over to me... :strooper: :lolspin:

I would if i could Flo, here's some porn instead mate - top right in the big pic on the little middle island :)

The piece on the left is a 'new SPS tank' present for Dom, the piece on the right is going nowhere...... the peachy thing in the middle is also never leaving my tank.........

John dropped over for a visit and brought me some new babies.........

A branching red digi - never had nor seen a branching digi for sale let alone a red one !

Four fresh cut acro frags that i would describe as very scrummy. I glued them all onto frag rocks and will take some pics in the morning as i kept the tank up late a couple of hours as it was.

Thanks so much for the awesome frags and the reef related nerd talk session

I placed it ever so gently on the stylo with putty and waited to see the stylo turn pink again. Instead of that happening the stylo looks bloody worse now, it's a ghastly color and the acro i didn't even want has started to color up instead :hammer:

I didn't bother to tell you guys about the acro two months back because it was for the stylo so it falls outside the 'hidden stunner' declaration rule we all agreed to follow. Since i was voted the ultimate rule enforcer i think i'm in a pretty good position to judge this piece as not being what many refer to as 'pulling a Sahin' :reading:

This post is why I enjoy your journal so much Andrew!

On a side note, yes the AF packages look great but the buckets DO NOT hold water... I think they blew their budget on the design. Just a word of warning that unless you want a mini flood do not attempt to use their salt buckets for anything wet. I keep forgetting and had flood number 3 last night...

I am starting component 1-2-3 this week, moving from Kalk which has been holding me fine until now. I am a little scared of what the cost is going to be though.... but it does have all the Trace in there I guess...

You can just make out the ever so subtle blue dragon breath radium hue i left on this pic.............

One of the best corals i've ever seen andrew!!!
Awesome!

The one with the purple polyps is a beauty too!Flow is sooo important for corals.
I've always found that it plays a huge role regarding growth rate and morphology.Do you think it could affect colors too?

Thanks for the heads up on the dodgy buckets mate, what a joke. Another thing for Perry to sort out i reckon. :hammer:

Components Strong

Pretty sure this is the stuff you add to your regular cheap bulk additives to make your own comp 123 mate. Way more economical but Matt or Perry will be able to confirm it.

Thanks Mike, it's a very eye catching blue table mate :)

I think flow plays a big part in color mate, in so far as affecting the actual health of the acro and thereby causing loss of pigment. Bad flow usually looks a bit like too little light at the beginning in regards to colors. Growth is affected terribly and acros will shut down or RTN slowly over time if unhappy and unable to extend polyps in the manner the acro needs to for long enough.

You're killing me Andrew! This one is in the master class for beauty and uniqueness!!!

I'm sure no one in their right mind would have hesitated to drop $40- on this just as i did 4 months ago. The color is a tad more saturated lol.

Back in March, very bleached but very healthy and only a few days off the reef. The piece to its right was extremely pale.

Today, no tip growth so no tip highlights but much more saturated pigments. It should start to shine if it starts growing hopefully.

Gah! My brain! 40 dollars for that but $150 for a shrimp???? A frag of that coral would be 30-50 dollars here. Colonies like that are selling for anything from 150-300 dollars here. There is a lot of good natured cursing of your name in my house from both the wife and I. Now continue to roll Acro porn:lol:

Thanks for the pic andrew!!

Thanks guys :)

Remember the cherry blossom looking thing Dave gave me for free when i refused to buy it - thought it was a dog. Don't mention that one to the wife please Matt. Not everything is cheap, the pink and mauve polyped thing was $300- !

No one does porn like me.......... i'm filthy.....

$35.......

Those SPS should come with a warning. I see them, look at my own, take another look at yours and then suffer a bout of depression.

Simply stunning Andrew.

Don't use actinics with radiums imo they were great once but the blue + or actinic blue bulbs around now work way better with radiums. If you can run twin T5 units either side of a radium i would suggest blue plus and coral plus bulbs in each. I run actinic blues and lagoon blues now and i think the lagoon blue bulb is much better for reds/pinks pigment production than the coral plus. If you are going to try a coral plus get a lagoon blue as well. If i could only run a single T5 either side it would be the lagoon blue/coral plus.

The actinics would be if I went with a ReefLux 10K or Ushio 10K to add strong blue and violet color. Why did everyone stop using them? I've been out of the hobby some years and they seem to have vanished. And do they look bad with the Radiums or just too blue? With a 20K I'd probably run Coral+ and Lagoon Blue like you suggested, I like a really white look.

Biggles how do you gauge spacing for you corals? I often see corals spaced far apart to allow for maximum growth without war, but your placement is much tighter.

Reef keeping is life!

Thanks guys :)

Keeping Colors from Wild colonies/ maricultured

Keeping Colors from Wild colonies/ maricultured

Your corals are so beautiful and the best part is that their colors are well-kept and very intense! I'm a fan of maricultured and wild corals but my corals always lose color intensity after a couple of weeks. The intense blue & purple will go away and become pastel and beige; sometimes blue Aussie ones turn pink. The red and pink colors usually get pastel and become light brown. I don't really understand why. My tank is fallow and I have just started to dose potassium nitrate hoping to increase nitrate to 5ppm. Did you ever have corals paling slowly? What do you do to keep the rich color? Thanks!

Andrew,
Why did you buy lithium? I can't find a use for it as it is a impurities in calcium chloride. Probably more than you would want.
Please enlighten me on what that do.

great to catch up last night Andrew and hope those frags do well for you. Tank is looking fantastic mate, inspiring really :)
