a talk with a petco employee

This thread is funny. But unfortunately, all the Petco's around our area are that incompetent also. 20-60% loss is pretty bad. If the LFS businesses around our area ran with this similar philosophy, they'd be out of business.

The truth is that since they aren't specialty stores, their employees aren't there for the love of the hobby, but just there for a job, so they really don't care to learn or know what is right and what is wrong..

Do you know that they aren't running at or around that level? What is the typical loss rate for a non-chain LFS anyway?

i worked for aquatic warehouse out in san diego and oceanvu aquariums in phoenix. those were jobs to supply me customers for my service business. i have since moved and when you need work you need work. now i have always dogged petco and their policies. i however now work for them. they have the most horrible look on the fish deparment. they will medicate a two dollar mouse which we have MILLIONS of in plauge proportions world wide but they will let their salt fish sit there and die with nothing more than a "fish under observation sign." i tried to talk until i ran out of breath. after a few months i took matters into my own hands and "TOOK OVER" aquatics. they have since been climbing the charts in sales and we have now cut losses drastically by about 75%. i figured if the RCAC doesnt know that the fish system is crap then she sure as hell wont know if i do a little "sneaky" stuff. hhahah. hasnt caught on yet. i think it is great to be able to help people who have no clue what they are doing and watch them develop into good hobbyists. where i am at now there is no good stores for salt water. one in town is an aptasia farm and nothing more. the rest are cyano scientists. petco needs to hire someone to turn their aquatics section into what it should be. they can afford to bild new stores and baseball stadiums so they sure as hell should be able to build and maintain quality systems for their fish. if i can get my voice heard while i climb the ladder then maybe one day things can change. until then just educate who you can with what you can.

@RumLad

back when I worked at my LFS, our saltwater loss rate was between 10%-30% depending on the time of year, delays at the airport, or an employee doing something stupid....most of the time we were on the low end of that...

...but I will say that I've never seen a white mouth moray eat a 5in powder blue tang ever again....
