A very large aquarium in a very small condo!

Agreed with o2manyfish. Have you thought about adding little "shelves" on the blocky parts? That could help "break the blockiness" and would prove very useful later to install corals!

I think the rockwork structure turned out well.

My only advice, is that you have so many straight lines of rock (on the back wall for example) If you make those edges more naturally shaped rather that straight you might be happier until the coral grows in naturally and blocks the straight edges.

But for all the plumbing you had to hide, you did great.

Thank you for the kind words, I just get so frustrated when I see what can be done with rock by the likes of people such as chingchai and others.

Yes if you look carefully you will see the small pieces of rock & coral on the walls that actually make small shelves to help facilitate the placement of coral. I plan on covering the walls with corals that do grow out much like zoos mushrooms and different types of plating corals.

:bounce2:The Tank is WET:bounce2:

It has taken a few days to fill the tank with saltwater.

Along with filling the tank I also brought one of the two Tunze Master DOC Skimmer 9440 online, and three media reactors. Each media reactors contain either carbon, phosban or Rowaphos. I'm using a lot of PO4 absorbing compounds right from the start because rocks like mine are notorious for leaching phosphates. To help kick start the bio filtration each of the refugium compartments in the refugium-filter has custom made boxes or trays that are and approximately 2.5" deep, 12"long by 8" wide. I use these trays to hold Miracle Mud. I have found that keeping the Miracle Mud in trays very helpful. I took two of the youngest Miracle Mud trays from my current tank and placed a 1" layer of old mud into each of the new trays, I than finished filling the trays with new mud. This allows a lot of organisms that where in my old refugiums to be introduced into my new tank's refugium.

Congrats and looking good. Man I love those Orpheks. Cant wait to see them fired up on the tank.

In a week or two we should be firing up the Orphek lights. My lights a little different that the ones usually offered, they are being wired up to a cat-5 cables and will be controlled by my Apex system. This way I can program sunrise, sunset and control the color of the lights all throw the Apex computer control window on my laptop.

That's a great cave and I like your vision. It takes a lot of talent to scape a large tank like that and the arrangement of rocks really invites you in, into an undersea adventure kinda way. It feels like I'm scuba diving when I look at the front of the tank.

Excellent build. My wife would kill me if I turned my living room into a long term construction project. I am living vicariously through you my friend.

I want to thank you for your kind words & encouragement. I wanted a large cave since I have several Tangs that can get quite large and they like caves to sleep in. I was forced to locate the cave in the middle of the tank due to the closed loop outlets & pluming. Unfortunately it gave it a very symmetric look. When we were building the rockwork, bedrock & the Flintstones kept coming to mind. I tried to find some Flintstones toys to decorate the rockwork before we filled it with water but couldn’t fine any, it would have made a great photo.
Yes my living room has been a major construction zone for over 8 months!!!! Pretty much lived & ate in the computer room all that time. I think it was well worth it! I’ve been dreaming of this tank for 30 years!

A neighbor came by with his pet penguin the other day. We decided he would not make a good addition to the reef aquarium. Plus his penguin really doesn’t like saltwater! He was accidentally caught in a fisherman’s net when he was a baby. He was hurt and near death. My neighbor took care, feed and nursed him back to health. When he was healthy enough they brought him to the sea to be released. The only problem was the penguin doesn’t like saltwater! At his home he had a freshwater pool and now that’s what he favors. He is a lot like a dog, he follows his owner around and he will swim in the ocean for a short time but he prefers his freshwater pool.

:celeb1:Woodwork almost done:celeb1:

Here is a quick recap of the woodwork being assembled.

Everything take so much time with a tank this size

Everything is just about completed except for the diamonds in center of the panels and three coats of DD varnish.

You can see how the woodwork will look when finished in this photo from the wall opposite the tank.

The tank really fits well in there.
It's stands on it's own and is in tune with everything else.

Congratulations.

wow! I just went through the whole thread...
EPIC!
congratulations on staying the course and getting it done.
I cant wait to see a full room/tank shot with the lights on and the whole room working together.
very impressive!

Very nice integration in its environment Captain! You and your team have worked beautifully! That is a really nice apartment you have there! Gorgeous view and a nice cozy home with a huge tank!

This was 100% my design and at times I had doubts it would overpower or just stand out as an oversized addition to a small room. Thanks for your vote of approval. When you work on a project this long and this close you really appreciate an objective eye.

I'm glad you liked what's been written so far. You shouldn't have to wait to much longer for shots of the tank up & running!
