Acans Acans Acans the collection journey

Ive been doing iodine dips, and still its progressing. Perhaps I will try the TMPC, I am almost ready to throw the towel on reefing. I had a huge acan collection, now a few hanging on, A hobby is supposed to be fun, its not fun watching your favorite things die...

Tokyo Sunset. Seems to like my tank. This picture was taken about 10 minutes after the lights went on during feeding time.

but most of the time, almost all the time, it is with the tentacles fully extended, as when drop AA

know someone explain to me why, since other LPS does not behave this way

I've had my ups and downs with Acans for over 10 years now. I wish I knew for sure the secret to success. One thing I've been able to do is move Acans that are not doing well into a different system. I had to do this as recently as 4 months ago. Loosing Acans to brown jelly left and right in one of my systems. They seemed stressed for a while, not opening as big, and the system being neglected for a bit. Then a big salinity drop due to a flood and auto top off filling sump with 60 gallons of RO.
Lost 50% of the Acans in that system in the month that followed. Dipped the remaining ones in some Revive and moved to another system with healthy Acans(which made me nervous) and 90% of them recovered.
Those Acans now look fantastic and noticed last week that they are trying to encrust onto the thick substrate they are sitting on. Very thick new growth.

Keeping the levels like Alk, calcium, and Magnesium where they should be is always a given. But one thing I've noticed might contribute to health is foods. I feed that tank live baby brine every day, and Red Sea's Reef Energy system(Amminos and Vitamins). I have not been hand feeding them like I used to, but I'm seeing success right now, so just doing what I've been doing and holding my breath.

Thanks Randy, its a bummer, Have you ever dealt with acan eating worms, more specifically the ones that breed?

I am having a hard time finding and eradicating the baby worms, I fragged a few acans and found little worms on the inside of the skeleton. I nuked all my live rock and dipped all my acans a few times in bayer advanced and still find evidence of them munching my coral.

So i moved all my acans to my rebooted main tank and they all are shrived, anyone have ideas how to get them to puff back up?

If your params are stable and in order it's just a matter of time. They won't rebound immediately.

I had on that was competely retracted for weeks, did no look happy at all. I was nearly certain it was going to die on me. I moved it in a lower flow area with less light and within a couple weeks it suddenly was as happy as can be.

Beautiful acans, hopefully after I get my problems figured out, I can pick up a pack of you.

I am having another round of BJD, tried Bayer advanced (incase of pests) along with revive and iodine. I have them in the lowest light in my tank, and no feeders out, I am afraid I am going to loose them all...

oh man bjd is the worst!! hopefully it doesnt wipe out your entire collection like i've heard of it doing to others.

I hope things turn around quickly for you.

I had around 15-20 acan colonies, I am at 7, with all of them looking really bad.

Eunice worms, black bugs, BJD, I think I had it all.

Thankfully my favorite, my avatar, is in a friends tank, and he fragged me a new piece.

A very big shout out to Darrell (All Delight)

In case you did not know Darrell was published in this quarters Reef Hobbyist Magazine. He did an article on his incredible skills in growing out and maintaining Acans. Not just an article however; his great photography landed him on the cover. A great article with amazing photos. You can see it online.

I would post up a link but don't want problems with the mods if I am creating any issues as all I am doing is getting the word out on a good man's wonderful acheivement. We are fortunate to have him as part of our reefing community.

CONGRATULATIONS AND VERY WELL DESERVED DARRELL

Sweet, could you pm me the link?

although its not available any more," interceptor " a dog heart worm remedy helped me out when i had my huge crash many years ago . i have collected about twenty or so pills of interceptor and am currently setting up a nice 45gal cube that i have constructed a rock wall on the back and partialy on the sides. i have all the components and will be setting it up soon . i have about fourteen smallish torches hammers and frogspawn colonies that will be covering the rear wall but will be visiting Randy for twenty or so acan frags when i get er up and running but i am currently maintaining a zillion tanks and just have not found the time . i will be pulling the trigger soon ans am currently building the acrylic light mounting brackets which have proven to be very difficult for my leds . its gonna be a crazy one as there will be no grade B corals in this particular tank . pictures will be posted soon ! i am only going to try the acans again because i have enough interceptor to eradicate certain predators . still a bit hesitant though ?

All Delight your definitely inspiring my come back and i thank you for that !
