Acans being eaten :(

Anyone have any ideas? Here's the situation:

I have had this happen to three acan colonies total now. The flesh will begin to slowly recede, around one head at a time or so until they are all gone. The third colony is getting hit now, two heads of my awesome rainbows gone and I do not want to lose this one. I currently have six other colonies right next to it that are completely unaffected. It seems to only affect one colony at a time.

There is no brown jelly, just tissue necrosis, which leads me to believe something is eating them. I finally went and got some coral RX to try dipping them today, and a couple white worm type things came off, but a was disturbed with what I saw when I put it back in the tank. The water I dipped it in was crawling with very tiny, white organisms. They almost looked like extremely small slugs or worms or something. Maybe about 1mm in length or so, maybe smaller. I took a look at the skeleton part of the affected acan once back in the water, and it appeared to be covered with these things. The only other place I've seen these things is they appear to be all over my torch corals as well, but never have an ill effect. Are they the culprit? Or merely cleaning up? It's obvious at this point that another colony will be next if I don't stop this soon. The tank is loaded with LPS, so it can't be something that eats all LPS. Tank parameters are:

CA: 420
Dkh: 9.2
Mag: 1340

Nitrates and phosphates undetectable. Medium spontaneous flow in the acan section of the tank (bottom), with 4x24 watt t5 bulbs 18" overhead. Let me know what you all think. Is interceptor going to be necessary? Haven't heard of an LPS bug really.

Can you get a macro picture of one? I'm not much an lps person, so I'm really just tagging along; first thing that comes to my mind might be a flatworm. Maybe RandyO will see this.

If it's happening that quickly, I'd give ARC a call and see if you can get his opinion sooner.

I've had this happen to acans in the past and I never got to the bottom of it. I hope that you have better luck than I did.

An Interceptor treatment to the whole tank would be my knee-jerk reaction. ARC should have the answers for you though.

I dont know anything thing about whitebugs or interceptor.I'm just more interested in what to look for in case it ever comes up.

My only experience was with a red acan colony where the polyps shrank in size, then started to bleach to pink to almost colorless with tissue deteriorating fairly slow.Like over the course of months. So odd that I had a rainbow colony unaffected both being directly fed.
Shorten version ,I did manage to reverse the situation but it doesn't sound at all like what your going through.
Good luck with everything

Update**

Well after trying the Coral Rx dip a couple more times, I realized that each time the dip was causing hundreds (maybe thousands) of the above mentioned tiny white bugs to come screaming off the affected acan colony, but it would not kill these bugs. They are still obviously alive and moving around in the water. After doing this one final time, I took a sample of water that was filled with these creatures to an LFS. We have yet to get a positive ID, but if they are indeed the culprit, we tested the water with flatworm exit to see if it would take them out. We put one drop on the small container of water, and sure enough after it was circulated, it did the trick!

I took the FWE home on Friday and dosed the tank according to the instructions. I have noticed that the colony is not being consumed as quickly as before, but there is still a bit of recession happening. I keep this colony very close to the front glass now so that I can examine it in the water, and I can see some of the white bugs in question (not nearly as many as before) still munching away at the acan flesh. I have increased the dosage now as of last night, and hopefully I will see more results when I arrive home this evening. So far the FWE has not had any noticeable effect on any other living creatures in the tank. Hopefully this will not only solve the problem, but save this colony in time! I will keep this updated.

Final update, i haven't lost a bit of flesh from this colony since I doubled the dosage of FWE, and there are no longer any tiny white worm/bug things crawling all over the colony either. I'm still not ruling out the fact that the white bugs could have been following up another more microscopic pest that was actually killing the acans, but either way, the FWE seems to have killed whatever the actual culprit was. Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice while this has been going on. I now have to focus on re-growing what is left of the colony (still 6-7 heads or so).

I'm glad you were able to figure it out Steve. Sorry I wasn't able to help you out while I was out of town.
