Achilles tang - Expert only?

Okay, he who hesitates, dies. Or something like that.

Went ahead and pulled the trigger. On both. I am now committed. To the insane asylum, probably.

Thanks for the help. Wish me and the fish good luck!

I seem to have the same problem Simon. I haven't tried another in years because I haven't had any luck with them. I always thought maybe it was cyanide but I could be wrong

I don't know, it's weird. I had one, a 4" blonde make it through 12 weeks of QT; it was eating well and showed no signs of weight loss. Put it into my main display and within a day it was pinned to the side of my Vortech pump and then dead the next. Tried a second one, similar experience. No third.

Palting- best of luck with your new tangs. I've always wanted an achilles, as they're my favorite, but they make me nervous. I hope yours does well and I'm looking forward to some pics and updates

I too had a very similar experience. Haven't tried a 3rd either. When the 625g is up I will try one last time.

Just received mine from DD a few days ago. About 4in or so and probably the finest specimen of a fish that I have ever received in my 20 or so years in this hobby. I lost my powder blue of 6 years to a suicide accident (jumper, long story) a few months ago and decided that I couldn't replace her with another. It was the perfect chance to finally go Achilles. I acclimated for about 2 hours in a bucket with all of the lights out on the tank and in the room. I also moved a few rocks around the night before to break the 2 other tangs of their habits. Surprisingly, it didn't have any issues with my hippo or yellow tang. They immediately got along and were swimming together and eating nori. I was blown away, I thought instant fighting and no eating. What a beautiful fish! I chose not to quarantine because off their delicate nature and after I saw the amazing condition of the fish I decided to just take the risk. I know this is not the recommended method but this fish was just too perfect to stick in a qt tank. I actually have never qt'd a fish and have just been really lucky for a very long time. My favorite fish are ich magnets but I personally think that the shock of qt is really hard on them so I choose not to qt. I believe that DD qt's fish though for a few weeks before shipping which is another reason for my decision. I run a full zeovit system with tons of flow so I'm sure that helps.

Thanks, guys. I WILL post pics when they arrive. Either here or at my "Tank Revival" thread, or maybe both.

Just did a 20% water change to the QT even though it's fully cycled just to because I am so anxious I have to do something. Currently at salinity 1.022. I believe LA ships fish at salinity anywhere from 1.015 to 1.022. Will have to check the salinity of the shipping water when they arrive and adjust the QT accordingly. WOOT!

Last few shipments I got from LA were right around 1.018. Make sure you have a powerhead or two in the QT. Also gets the food moving which can trigger feeding response.

Fish are here!!

Arrived at my door at 9:30. Double thumbs up to LA for packaging. Large Styrofoam box, Styrofoam pebbles inside, large bags containing the fish, hot packs still warm to the touch.:thumbsup: Good thing too, 'cuz it's 26 degrees and icy outside.

Temp acclimated the bags in the tank for 15 minutes, opened the bag to check salinity (1.018, right on the nose, ca1ore :) ), adjusted the QT salinity to match, emptied the bag water into a bucket, placed the fish in QT, and took a photo. That white spot is on the tank, not on the AT. The QT has been cycled and running for so long, it has coralline. AT is about 3" and the PT is about 2 1/2". Right now the AT and PT seem to be buddies swimming together in the 30 gallon QT. Will see if that lasts, may have to separate them.

A better shot of the PT. Can't seem to get a photo by himself. They both swim together, and moving fast.

Thanks guys.

And they are eating!! Achilles likes flakes, and Purple likes pellets. So far. They initially ignored Nori, but I think they were intimidated by the veggie clip. They are now eating that too.

I think I got lucky with healthy specimens. Hope to keep them that way.

I have had many purples over the years, and they always ate well (easy fish for me); Achilles not so much, as I have often had to entice them to eat with lots of different things (and a couple never ate) so that yours takes flakes is a very good sign. Just keep the stress levels down, give it good flow, keep an eye out for ich, and you have a really good shot at success.
