Achilles Tang Primer

Try Rod's food. My Achilles really liked that. It also would pick all over the tank, as yours does. Also, attach some nori to a clip, see if it will eat that.

After several months, mine began to eat pellets too, and now it really pigs out on them.

Best of luck - the biggest problem with Achilles is ich, so if you can keep that at bay and get it to eat, you should be in good shape.

Saturday the power when out and the Achilles got whit spot(or can be valvet) in a salinity of 1.010
in 2 days 7 fish died that was in the same tank
i have moved the Achilles to 4ft tank also hyposalinity without substrate
Sunday he was on his side today he was swimming so i started copper
he is still not eating

Thanks dude

I tried green sea weed on clip and rock, its not really eating it...

I think I should try RED sea weed maybe? what you guys think

also I live in Toronto, and I don't think any stores here sells RODs?...what is that ?

thanks

Pran

I just feed Nori, but they will eat any and all of it once acclimated. Now that mine is eating pellets, that is mostly what I feed.

i feed mine green algae. Some of them come in "garlic flavored." That might help. I pretty much always treat my new fish with metronidazole as I have gotten a few fish who wouldn't eat until after that treatment.

As I recall, it was close to a week before mine started eating. Then it was 1/2 a sheet twice a day in QT. I freaked out until it ate. I also always put new algae in about 2x/day if it doesn't get eaten. He would not eat with me looking for about 2-3 weeks, but the algae started disappearing so I knew he was eating.

thanks

my fish looks healthy, but its 5 days now and its stil not eating

I tried

PE Mysid
brine Shrimp
NLS Pallets
Spirunla flakes (Ocean formula 2)
Omeaga one flakes
red and green sea weed
selcone and kent marine garlic

none of them worked out so far

how did you get yours to eat?

what should I do guys?

thanks

Pran

Give him some more time to settle in before you start to panic. As long as it is not "weeks" without food then don't sweat it. Fish can go for a while without food. Continue to offer a variety of foods and observe his behavior with the other tangs. The fact that he is picking on the rock is a good sign. It could be that he is being stressed by the other fish and you are not catching it. Also check all water parameters as these tangs will be the first to react to any subpar readings.

Keep the algae offers. That should entice him eventually. You can also try garlic in the food to entice the fish.

hey guys

A BIG THANK YOU to all for your great support

after trying soo many differnt food...I see my achilies finally eating the nori a little

I saw its stomach and it looks really fat, so I think its prob eating but not when I am looking.

Its not an aggressive eater but its eating little by little.

I am keep on putting nori in the tank on a rock, I put the nori in a cup, with 2 drops of kent marine garlic and 5 drops of selcon, let it stay there for 1 hr and then put that there for it to eat.

BTw... the fish's eye changes blue colour when its mad right? as I am tying I just see it doing something to my onyx clown and for like 15 seconds the eyes turns blue, lol kinda scary, but at the beginning of this forum someone said that same thing too

lol

Another question, in anther site I read that someone put too much garlic in their tank and it decreased his tank's ph and he loss the fish...is this true?

thanks

Pran

Sorry I see you have been trying Garlic. What size was the tank he was in at the LFS and was he alone or with other fish??

Thanks

hmm...I think the tank there was prob 3 feet long or so, it only had small fish no big tangs

I see my achilies getting a little aggressive now towards the purple tang, desardin, and my two pyramid butterflies

thats a good sign I guess...also its stomach is very fat so it should be eating...

I will keep posted on whats going on

again thank you everyone for all your support

Pran

It's eyes do turn when it's mad as far as I have read. I would be very careful as it gets more comfortable as it might start getting more aggressive.

Your situation sounds much like mine. I think it took a week or so for it to figure out that the nori was food. After QT, it learned from the other tangs pretty quickly that the mysis etc was food too.

I could be wrong, but watch the desardjini/achilles relationship for problems. Don't they both think they are the top fish?

One thing you will need to watch out for is aggression once the fish establishes itself and becomes comfortable in the aquarium; Achilles are more aggressive than many of the tangs you currently have in your aquarium.

thanks for all the help

right now, yellow tang is the aggresive one in my tank, originally I had 3 yellow tangs, and they were doing good for few months.

Then out of no where one killed the other one, so I sold my 3rd one. The Desardin is a really cool fish, it got nice colours and stuff and its not that bad.

I learned that if you put sea weed on a live rock and put rubber band around it, the fish find it easily and eat it, b/c thats how it eats food in the ocean.

I read this in another site though, and it worked for mine, also this way 99% of the sea weed are being ate by the tangs and none will be wasted. Not only my 5 tangs eat sea weed, but my two pyramid butterflies, cleaner wrasse and I think my barreltt and lyretail anthias eats it too.

I hope achilies becomes the aggresive one in my tank, b/c if its aggresive then its the strongest and will live for long :)

I want to get it very fat ASAP, any idea how you got yours to eat PE Mysid?

to tell u the true, I bought many different food and vitamins worth 100$ for it to start eating and sooner or later I want it to start eating all so it can become very healthy.

lol

keep that as LAST option...i have doubt whether a achilles can take that stress..
