Achilles Tang Primer

I was thinking that perhaps these are being collected from different regions and "maybe" they are a tad bit hardier than the previous that were price at $59-$69? Or its just a wishful thinking on my part and trying to convince myself to buy this fish for $149. LOL

pretty sure this fish is only found in hawaii area and some over to indo??? but no i dont believe they are any hardier lol but good thinking to convince yourself. what size tank you have?

My tank is 180gallons. However, its not your typical 180. Here are the dimensions (LXWXH) 4x3x2. Do you think that the Achilles can be happy with only a 4' length?

i say straight into tank! I think ich is going to come either way with tangs and when you stress the. If you have a healthy reef system it will only run its corse for a short time and be done.

Not..

I say it would be fine.. pretty sure you are going to get very different answers to this question. it is going to depend if you get a hardy specimen or not IMO

I have a 167 Gallon tank, will a Achilles be fine in there. Dimensions are 59.5 x 25.5 x 25.5. I also have a blue hippo tang. And plan on putting a Red Sea Regal Angelfish in there, will this be a problem. And are there any other tangs that I can add to the tank with these or am I maxed out on fish after the Achilles, Hippo, and Red Sea Angel

3 mo's in my 120, and still happy. kicked its ich and swims and interacts alcot. will eat from my hand and loves nori (the only thing it eats) and as long as its th3ere, hes munching down. To all interested dont let these guys get you down. with propper maint. and understanding of what they need and a good specamin you can def do it in 120 4 foot long tank.

I just lost my achilles to ick this week. I tried to keep him in the display as long as I could but it finally got so bad that I had to move him to a QT. He died the next day. Mine was eating great but he could not beat the ick.

I still love the achilles but I think this may be my last attempt for owning one unless I have a FO tank where I can add some copper. I currently have 2 stingrays in my display so I can not add any copper.

For anyone interested - I never had ick in my display before adding the achilles. In addition, I am running a 57 watt and 40 Aqua 24/7 in my display. The 57 watt has been running since I set-up the tank and the 40 was on standby and has been running since I got the achilles. Both UV's have new bulbs and the quartz sleeve is cleaned weekly.

I have since removed all of my fish from my display except a six line and 2 chromas (cant catch them and they are not showing any signs of ick) and moved them to a QT with Cupramine to make sure they do not have any ick.

I also have 3 cleaner shrimp. The achilles was not that bright! He would go to the shrimp to be cleaned, but he would not stay still long enough for them to work.

I then purchased a nice cleaner wrase. As soon as I dropped it in, the achilles chased it and the cleaner started swimming all around him. However, my six line also went crazy and would not let the fish clean for any length of time. Last time I saw the wrasse, the six line chased it into the rocks - never saw it again!

While I am in no way an expert on anything to do with aquariums, I highly suggest trying the cleaner wrasse when you have an achilles that can beat ick. It was amazing to see how the achilles and the cleaner wrasse instantly reacted.

All I can say is that this has been an experience and triggers are a lot easier to keep!

That was my last one for sure. I actually think that if you had them in a FO tank, they are not so bad to keep. It seems that ick is main problem.

i disagree I think you need them in a full reef tank corals eat ich also. Mine never got ich once and I never quanietined or anything. I also never won any spelling bee's lol

i have had no issues except for ich. about a week after having him, he broke out. three weeks later it was gone, then back then gone. now 3 mo's with out. eats a ton and is very happy. will eat from my hands.

guys I bought an achilles 2 weeks ago, he's about 4-5", Got him eating loads but has broken out in Ich.

He;s covered in it. I can't get him out as he's in a 260g reef tank. There are plenty of SPS in the tank so can't treat tank.

He's been feeding loads today on Nori sprayed in Vitamins and also brine with garlic.

My others tangs are also effected bar the Naso and they are also eating as well.

Is there anything I should be doing for them? esp the Achilles as he's my favourite fish. He's fat and eating well which is the main thing.

I am running a zeovit tank, so don't have UV on the tank.

Will I be stuck with have phases on Ich forever? or will it just keep coming and going.

Cheers
Paul.

if you read a page back we all listed what we think about QT and this fish. Just let the ich run its course and everything will be better off than if you try to remove it and put it into a QT and stress it out more.

Leave him be. As long as no other fish is fighting with him. Just keep feeding him and with some vitamins added to the food. Be sure you have a nice strong but soft power head for him to swim against.
