Achilles Tang Primer

I made the mistake of not QT'ing when I got my Achille's a few months ago...he ended up getting ich after about a week, although I was fortunate that he never had it badly enough to inhibit his appetite and it never affected the other fish. I kept feeding nori with selcon all day long, every day and finally he kicked it. Every few days a spot or two will appear on him, but disappears and never seems to effect him. He's fat as can be and plan on keeping it that way ;-) He has so much personality and absolutely love this fish! Had to include some pics of him (it's like bragging about my kids)

I picked up a Juvi in the beginning of October, it went straight to the QT and only took a few days before it accepted nori and pellets. It will stay in QT for another 10 weeks. I didn't plan on this long of a QT period but Sandy really messed up a lot of things around here, had to fix a few things around the house first.

My achillies per. Had them in QT for 6 weaks.

No problems with aggression between the different Acanthurus Tangs?

What order did you add them in?

8 foot tank?

No agresion at all. Teneti are just peacefol fish. So dey dident care abaut ichader at all. Achillies tangs are pott in the tank the last ones

I did not QT mine but when I got him he had been at the distributor for a few weeks and then he spent about a month in an established reef tank. I was able to witness him eat and I was able to verify that he was Ich free prior to the purchase. Of course he got Ich once I put him in my tank but his eating behavior allowed him to heal without any serious issues.

He is a wonderful fish and probably my favorite in my tank right now.

Hey guys, I'm about to purchase my first achilles and figured I'd post here first. He's gonna into my newly set up 180. Only thing is, I was hoping to have both an achilles and a PBT together. To maximize my chances, I'm planning on adding them both at the same time. I have a PBT in QT at the moment. They are both going to go through several weeks of QT with prazi pro and cupramine. Going to pick up the next achilles on DD.

Any tips on making this go as smoothly as possible?

If at all possible buy locally from a reputable dealer and witness it eating prior to purchase. If the fish is not eating prior to purchase it probably wont eat in your tank.

I'd assumed Divers Den on LiveAquaria would be the best source, since they one ship once their fish are pest free and eating well. I haven't seen any locally. I know one LFS offered to order one for my, but I'd have to take it straight home from the bag.

In my limited experience keeping this fish (and other sensitive fish) if the it is not eating in captivity then it is not gonna make it. I've purchased 4-5 of these fish over 15 years (they used to be $50+$60 each!!) and the one I have now is the only one that I verified was eating prior to purchase AND it is the only one that has survived.

I've never ordered from LiveAquaria but I'm sure they are reputable; however, if you can I would strongly suggest getting a fish that you can see in person prior to purchase. IMO It is worth a premium in price (LFS's are higher for a reason) to get a fish that you know is eating.

Being patient in this hobby is very hard. Yes you can have a fish over-nighted from an online distributor but your chances of getting a healthy specimen is low.

Keep us posted on your progress.

To follow up, would anyone forego their own QT process after picking up an AT from the DD because of the rigorous QT process they already have in place?

I trust no one but myself to keep my DT disease free. They advise you to still quarantine purchases from them as well.

This is one fish I would "never" attempt at adding directly to my DT without QT'ing...you're just asking for trouble. I didn't follow my own advice earlier in the summer and went through 6 weeks of pure he** getting my achilles squared away, if I would have just QT'd first I would have avoided the whole situation ;-)

Ridiculous. Before posting this, I spent a good part of 3 days reading this on my 13 inch screen until I got to page 52 . After feeling quilty about not going the distance I though I'd read the final few pages. Now I see on page 53 someone asked this same question almost word for word.

I am sorry. :hmm2:

Anyone had any issues of discoloration in the AT.
I had my AT for 4 years and noticed the color looks more pale than black now.

Never added any new fish in a year, AT is eating great, swimming, and no issues.

Just wondering if the AT color lightens when growing older.

Not to get into a long Ich discussion here but I've had Ich in my DT tank soo many times it's not funny.... In my experience if the fish are eating well and provided a clean environment then the Ich will go away on its own and a QT process is not necessary. I've tried the QT process several times and if you don't have a very high quality QT setup then you will stress the fish or even worse kill the fish.

On a side note, I only add 1-2 fish/year into my established DT tank. If you are adding a greater quantity into a newly established tank then you might have more serious issues.

Not sure what is consider a high quality QT setup. I QT both my PBT and Achilles the same time in a 20g tank with a small powerhead and airstone. Using the tank transfer method for 3 weeks with parzi treatment and 1 week observation. Both are thriving in my tank for over 6 month now.
